Born in New Waterford, Ray was one of seventeen children of the late John C. and Mary Ann Bourgeois. A retired welder and member of UA Local 682, he worked at various jobs across the province and country to provide for his family until his retirement in 2003. We have been told he was one of the best. Ray will always be known for his vibrant personality, his tormenting, his great sense of humor and quick smile. He was a compassionate man with a huge heart, an animal lover and a ‘go to’ person when anyone needed a listening ear, or an earful. When he wasn’t chatting with everyone in the community at Sharon’s Place convenience store in Louisdale, Ray loved to spend time entertaining at the cottage with his family and many friends. Many referred to him as Bowser. He was always the cook, the joke teller and the gracious host. Affectionately known as Guppie or Grampie RayRay, he loved playing with his grandkids and showing his tender side (as well as teaching them how to curse and throw rocks). They were his pride and joy. Ray is survived by his loving partner of 27 years, Sharon Sampson; daughter, Taralee (Eric) Wood; sons, Eric and Kevin (Maggie); his children’s mother, Maureen; stepchildren, Brian, Joey and Duane Sampson; grandchildren, Rhylan, Cooper, Trevor, Abby, Becca, Liam, Ben, Serena, Samara, Skylar, Travis, Cody and Kristen and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Melvin (Westmount, NS), Leo, (Oshawa, ON) and Henry (Windsor, NS) and sisters, Evelyn Pollock (Peterborough, ON), Lorraine (Glace Bay, NS), twin sister, Pauline (John) Michalak (Florida) and Diane (Johnny) MacKinnon (New Victoria, NS). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and extended family. Ray is predeceased by his parents, John C. and Mary Ann Bourgeois; his brothers, Tom (1923), Peter, Willie John (Plugger), Charles, Tom (1944), Wilfred and sisters, Mary, Dorothy and Tillie. Ray is also predeceased by his stepson, Shane. On the day of his passing, Ray had just reached his 10-year anniversary of being cancer free and was a huge supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. He looked forward to donning his yellow survivor shirt and participating in the event each year. Donations can be made in Ray’s memory to ‘Ray Ray’s Sugarbears’ Relay for Life team by following this online link (or donating in person): http://convio.cancer.ca/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFL_NS_odd_?px=3812980&pg=personal&fr_id=22389. We will be walking in his memory at this year’s event in Arichat, on June 10th. Memorial donations can also be made to the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation, or to another charity of your choice. The family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. Mark Sampson at Strait Richmond Hospital and Drs. Matthew Boyd and Tanya Sullivan at Saint Martha’s Hospital, and the EMT staff, for their meticulous care. A special thanks is extended to the wonderful nursing staff at both hospitals for making our Dad (and us) as comfortable as possible during his final days. At Ray’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the arrangement of C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home in Arichat and a Celebration of Life service will be taking place for Ray on Saturday, February 11th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Louis Parish Hall in Louisdale. GRACE DELLORUSSO Passed on: February 6th, 2017 It is with the deepest and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Grace Dellorusso who passed away very peacefully surrounded by her family and close friends on February 6th, 2017. She was a gentle and kind soul with a strong inner strength that enabled her to surpass so many trials in her life including her lengthy illness with dementia which she fought bravely and with great dignity until the very end! As a young woman, mom always dreamed of pursuing a life of adventure in a new country so at the young age of 16 she bravely left her beloved country of Vasto, Italy and journeyed her way to Montreal, Canada to start her new life! There, she learned a new language, a new culture and embraced a new life! Shortly afterwards, the love of her life, Francesco Dellorusso, a fellow countryman entered her world and that was the beginning of a great romance for the next 49 years until our dad's passing. Together mom and dad forged a life of strong family ties and the value of hard work to succeed in life. We are so grateful for the wonderful values that our mom brought into our lives and to this we honor her... She has taught us the importance of staying close to another and to never lose touch, to honor & respect one another. To be forgiving and loving at all times, to remember where we came from...our heritage, our culture, our beautiful music. Also, she taught us the art of great Italian cuisine! We will miss her gentle presence & smile but we will forever cherish our fond memories of her. She leaves behind her children & grandchildren, Anna (Marco) Dellorusso, Emilia (Pat & Francesca Coppinger),Lorenzo (Shauna, Daniel ) Dellorusso, Gabriel Dellorusso & Laurie Marshall,Paul & Iman ( Sami, Nadia) Dellorusso. She also leaves behind her only living brother, William Del Borrello and his family, Montreal. We would love to thank so many people who gave us encouragement & support but especially our mom's caregivers for their amazing care, love & loyalty! Sincerely, Dellorusso Family. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home , 564 Alexandra St., Sydney with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Miss Me But Let Me Go When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no rites in a gloom-filled room Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little-but not too long And not with your head bowed low Remember the love that we once shared Miss me-but let me go For this is a journey that we all must take And each must go alone. It's all part of the Master's plan A step on the road to home When you are lonely and sick of heart Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds Miss me but let me go. Dwyer - 87 yrs Thomas “Tommy” Kauffman - 82 yrs Lillian “Lil” Lirette - 73 yrs Louie McDonald - 62 yrs Edward John “Eddie” Pino - 77 yrs Bibiana (Emanuele) Goduto Born: May 6th, 1922 Passed on: January 30th, 2017 On January 30, 2017, Bibiana Goduto passed away peacefully in the Mira Bay wing of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, with her son Dominic and daughter-in-law Aileen by her side. Born May 6, 1922 in Roseto Valfortore, Foggia, Italy, Bibiana was the daughter of Domenico and Isabella (Rinaldi) Emanuele. In 1952, she immigrated to Canada with her husband Alfredo and two young sons, Blaise and Dominic. After arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax, they crossed the causeway to join the vibrant Italian community in Sydney, Cape Breton. After several years of renting properties, in 1954 she and Alfredo bought their home on Gunn Street in Whitney Pier. Soon their daughter Vincenza was born to complete the family. A woman of many talents, Bibiana was typical of her generation: resourceful, hardworking and remarkably self-sufficient. Yet she also loved a laugh and a joke, and found great joy in life's simple pleasures. She arrived in Nova Scotia with no knowledge of English, but quickly picked up the basics by listening to Ann Terry's morning radio show, which she never missed. Her diverse skills included embroidery and sewing (both by hand and with her much-loved Singer sewing machine), which she learned at special classes in her hometown of Roseto. She also crocheted many beautiful items over the years, and was especially proud of her intricate bedspreads – one of which was much admired by visitors to her room at Harbourstone. A bubbly lady with a ready smile, Bibiana loved to sing at every opportunity – particularly Italian arias – and performed with the local Italian choir. Devoutly religious and a firm believer in the power of prayer, which she practiced daily, she was a dedicated member of the former St. Nicholas Parish and later Holy Redeemer Parish, both in Whitney Pier. She was also a longstanding member of the St. Nicholas Ladies' Auxiliary and the Cape Breton Italian Multicultural Association, through which she made many friends and participated extensively in the life of her community. She loved flowers and took great pride in tending her extensive vegetable garden – which also gave her the opportunity to use the preserving skills she'd learned growing up in Italy – and spent many happy summer days at the family's bungalow in Barrachois. Her family will particularly miss her wonderful cooking and authentic Italian recipes, which she loved to share, as well as her wealth of traditional knowledge – for example, on the art of winemaking. Even in her later years, Bibiana's memory was impressively sharp and she loved regaling visitors with stories of her life in Italy and her experience of coming to Canada as a young woman. Listeners were often amazed at her ability to recall names, dates and other details with surprising speed and accuracy. At the age of 90, she even requested to stand and make a speech at her grandson's wedding reception, which she proceeded to do with humour and eloquence. Proudly independent, Bibiana continued to live in her Gunn Street home after the death of her husband in 1990 – right up until September 2016, when she graciously decided the time had come to accept a space at Harbourstone. Here she embraced new friends and a new community with her usual enthusiasm and good cheer. Throughout her final months, she faced her illness and ultimately death itself with courage, faith, and sheer determination. And as always, she did it her way. Bibiana is survived by her children, Blaise (Rosalind), Dominic (Aileen) and Vincenza (Vincey) Delaney (Cliff); her grandchildren, Gina Goduto, Domenica Goduto (Scott), Don Carlo Goduto (Larissa), Matthew Delaney, David Delaney and Jonathan Delaney; her great-grandson, Hunter Goduto; her brother, Andrew Emanuele; sister, Rose DiSantis; sister-in-law, Angelina Goduto and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Alfredo; her baby sister, Josephine; her sister-in-law, Lucy Emanuele and brother-in-law, Pat DiSantis. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier on Saturday, February 4, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. The family will receive visitors at a reception to be held in the Whitney Pier Legion immediately following the funeral. Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center, the Holy Redeemer Building Fund, or charity of one’s choice. Bibiana (Emanuele) Goduto Born: May 6th, 1922 Passed on: January 30th, 2017 On January 30, 2017, Bibiana Goduto passed away peacefully in the Mira Bay wing of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, with her son Dominic and daughter-in-law Aileen by her side.

HAROLD HOLMES BRIAND Born In: SMELT BROOK Born: February 1st, 1932 Passed in: NORTH SYDNEY Passed on: January 31st, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved father, husband, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, Harold Holmes Briand, 84, who passed away on Tuesday, January 31st, 2017, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Smelt Brook on February 1, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Martha-Ann (Dixon) Briand, also of Smelt Brook. He moved to White Point shortly after his marriage. Harold worked most of his life as a fisherman in the Cape Breton area. His four sons followed in his footsteps. Harold often asked the crew to leave the everyday fishing gear on deck so that he could exercise his passion for sword fishing…if swordfish were seen in the area; he wanted to join in the hunt. He kept his harpoon skills up by regularly participating in harpoon throwing challenges at local events. After Dad’s retirement from fishing, he always kept busy at something, whether it was working around wood, making little wood carvings or helping his son Kenny around his boat and gear. He was always there to lend a hand when you needed him. He also thoroughly enjoyed his evening chats with neighbours and friends. Harold is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Julia (Dunphy); his sons, Patrick (Audrey), South Harbour, Gerry (Marie), White Point, Charles (Frieda), Neil’s Harbour and Kenny (Linda), White Point. Also surviving are brothers, Douglas (Susie) and Manny; sister, Jenny; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Harold was predeceased by brothers, Chester, Willie Vincent, Harry, Ernest, James, Kelson, Jack, Wilfred and Henry; sisters, Mary, Alice and Mable, and infant grand-child, Patrick Noel. WILLIAMS Harold Joseph (Bud) Williams, age 80, of Cheticamp, N.S., passed away on Tuesday, January 17th, 2017, in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre after a long, courageous battle with esophageal cancer. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Harold Baxter (Shorty) and Madeline (Stanford) Williams. Bud started his young career by enlisting in the Canadian Army where he served a posting in Germany. After leaving the army he went to work with National Sea Products, fishing out of Halifax, St. John’s, and other ports for numerous years. While in port in Halifax on one particular trip he met a young lady, Pauline Poirier. Smitten, Pauline dragged him to Cheticamp to show off her newfound treasure to her mom and dad, as well as her sisters, brothers, cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends and behold, as the story goes, a few strangers and a few tourists to firm up her holding! Bud immediately fell in love with Cheticamp where they moved and spent the rest of his life. Bud loved commercial fishing and spent his career fishing lobster, crab, et al., out of Cheticamp. Bud also greatly enjoyed trout fishing with his good friends Charlie Poirier and Eddy Joe Camus. It was in Cheticamp that Bud and Pauline were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Michelle, and a beautiful stepdaughter, Evelyn Doyle, who were both the “apple of his eye”. Over our numerous phone conversations over the years Bud would elevate these three ladies to queens, princesses, or just plain royalty! Surviving are his wife Pauline (Poirier) Williams; his daughter Michelle (Robert) Poirier; stepdaughter Evelyn (Stephen) Doyle (both of Cheticamp); brothers James, known as Jim, (Mary) Williams and Charles (Pearl) Williams; sisters Florence Little, Madonna Williams (Hugh Joseph), Norma Murphy, and Dorothy Michaels; and other relatives too numerous to mention, but Bud would want us to mention his favourite aunt, Aunt Elsie in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland. Predeceased by brothers Cyril and youngest brother John; brothers-in-law Ross Little and Patty Murphy; and sister-in-law Blanche Williams. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass held on Tuesday, January 24th, 2017, in St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp. Burial will be at a later date in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Funeral was under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services Ltd. Condolences may be sent to, cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca <mailto:cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca>. This obituary was lovingly written by Bud’s brother, Charles Williams. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
