SHANE RENARD NUGENT Born In: VAL CARTIER, Quebec Born: July 3rd, 1967 Passed in: FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta Passed on: February 3rd, 2017 It is with very heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Shane Renard Nugent, 49, on Friday, February 3, 2017, in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Shane was born July 3, 1967, in Val Cartier, Quebec, but spent the majority of his life in Florence, Nova Scotia. He was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Nugent. Shane graduated from Memorial High School with a trade in heavy-duty mechanics. His love of automotives and everything mechanical lead him to a successful career as a rig manager. He worked for 15 years in the Alberta oil sands, mainly with Calmena Energy Services. He quickly rose to success at Calmena, winning rig of the year two years in a row. He was very proud of his loyal crew and the accomplishments they were able to achieve. Although Shane spent most of his drilling career in Alberta, he also ventured overseas to Kenya, where he worked hard doing geothermal wells. He was no stranger to the east coast way of life as well; during his younger years he sailed all over doing deep-sea fishing to support his family. Shane always put his family first, even though providing for them meant he had to be away. Some of Shane’s favorite pastimes were walking around Florence beach with his grandchildren, camping with family, four wheeling with his friends, and his evening drives with his “Sherryberry”. Shane Nugent was a wonderful man who touched the hearts of every one he met; his kindness and generosity were like no other. We will all miss his sense of humor that could fill a room and put a smile on anyone’s face. He is survived by his children, Shane, Shayna (Colten), Tyler (Gabby) and Ryan; his fiancé and love of his life, Sherry Lawrence; mother of his children, Laura Leah; brother, Thomas; sisters, Valerie (Pat), Debbie (Henny) and Thelma (Mike). His memory will be preserved in the hearts of the people he loved most, his grandchildren, Peyton, Lennon, Paysley, Brayden, Aubree and Greyson. Visitation for Shane Nugent will be held in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, from 2-4 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place at 4 p.m. in the funeral home. Donations in Shane’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com <http://www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com/>. BENJAMIN (BEN) BERNICK Remembering Ben Sadly, native son, Benjamin (Ben) Bernick passed away in mid-November 2016, in Ottawa, where he lived with his beloved wife Bila and their son Jordan, who were his greatest loves. Ben grew up in Sydney where he went to Colby School, Woodill Jr. High, and Sydney Academy. He and Bila married in Sydney. After Jordan was born they moved to Israel, where they lived for 20 years. In Israel Ben work for the US Embassy where he coached and played for the very successful Scorpions softball team. Ben and Bila returned to Canada, finally settling in Ottawa where they lived for the past 15 years. Just last summer Ben and Bila returned to Cape Breton to spend time with friends and relatives. Even though Ben had been away from home for approximately 35 years, his deep love for the island never diminished. While in Cape Breton Ben and Bila spent time in Dundee, Sydney, Ingonish, Margaree Harbour and yes, they even drove the Cabot Trail. Those who knew Ben growing up, in Sydney, would remember him for his "take no prisoners" and ferocious competitive spirit in whatever sport he did especially tennis and basketball and his adventurous approach to life. To his closest friends Ben will be remembered always for being there when it really mattered and his quick wit. We will truly miss Ben and thank him for being such an important part of our lives growing up in Cape Breton and beyond. Ben, you will be with us always. The Colby Boys

To My Mother If I were granted one wish today, and I knew it would come true; I’d ask the Lord for a little time, to speak alone with you. To hear your voice like it used to be, so soft, so quiet, so clear; That voice which has been silenced, during these last few years. To hear you sing those old-time hymns, that speak of Jesus’ love; And have you read the Bible, with a message from above. I know my wish will not come true, and that is all right too; For I treasure all my memories, of the mother I once knew. So I thank God that when I visit, and hold your hand in mine; I see a peace upon your face, I see my Lord divine! To the staff at Harbourstone Miner’s Lane, the nurses and workers who were all so kind to her and went above and beyond their call of duty. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts; you are all true caregivers. Also, special thanks to Dr. Murdock Smith, family physician. Mamie also enjoyed her daily visits from her brother Chris, who resides at Harbourstone as well. A special thank you to our family friend, Bernice Grant, who was only ever a phone call away for Mamie. Mamie always said that there was no truer friend than Bernice, who has become a member of our family over the years. Thank you also to Dr. John Ritter, who was always there for Mamie and went above and beyond, with unscheduled visits to see her. Mamie always referred to Bernice and Dr. Ritter as her ‘angels.’ Also, thank you to Father Dan Boudreau who prayed with her and put a smile on her face in her final moments. A celebration of Mamie’s life will take place on Friday, February 17th, at 11 a.m. at St. Leonard’s Parish, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Daniel Boudreau officiating. As per Mamie’s wishes, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford.
