Cape Breton Post June 30, 2008 Letters to the Editor Young soldier's story engraved in memory Elsworth Young (1897-1916) was a young soldier with Nova Scotia's famed 25th Battalion when he died during the Battle of the Somme in the fall of 1916. He was a Cape Bretoner whose mother, Emma Young, lived in Glace Bay at the time he enlisted in 1915. My lifelong interest in the Great War, and particularly Nova Scotia's part in it, began almost a half-century ago as I listened to the riveting war stories of a Marble Mountain great-uncle who had fought in the 25th with two brothers. I found all of my uncle's stories of life in the trenches mesmerizing but none more so than his account of the circumstances surrounding the death of his friend, Elsworth Young. I understand that relatives of Elsworth Young may still live in Glace Bay. I am keen to pass on the memories of Elsworth that were conveyed by my uncle in the 1960s and to learn more about the young man who went off to Flanders in 1915 and never came home. 'Jim' Stockley North Ingonish - With great sadness, we announce the passing of one of Cape Breton's best-known characters, a most welcoming soul who was never happier than when serving up tea and outrageous stories to family and friends from far and wide. James W Stockley (Jim), of North Ingonish, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at the Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neil's Harbour. In his last days he was surrounded by his loving family, wife, Betty Stockley (nee Cake); daughters and son and many of the people whose lives he touched with love and humour beyond measure, Barbara, Patsy (Ernie), Marilyn (Dave), Elizabeth (Dave), John, Joan (Michel), Carolyn (John), Marie Alayne, Sharon (Mike), Mary, Linette, and Graham. Jim was predeceased by his son, James Russell Stockley, parents, Alfred and Louise, and sisters, Percila (Pat), Katherine (Kaye), Frances and Nora. Jim is survived by brothers and sisters, Rose, Russel, Murray, Hannah, Clarence, Roy, Mary and Ann. Jim felt that his home in Ingonish was one of the most heavenly places on earth. There, he happily greeted people from all over the province and the country, whose calls and letters during his illness heartily testify that Jim was a larger than life character, who will never be forgotten as visits to Cape Breton just wouldn't have been the same without having met the "Mayor of Bear Cove," as he often mischievously referred to himself. Words that come to mind when remembering Jim are loving, hilarious, generous and free-spirited, a wonderful father and grandfather, mischievous and irreverent. He felt laws were mostly meant to be broken, a characteristic which gave him quite a notable reputation with the park wardens, fisheries officers and generally anyone who tried to confine his space or restrict his freedom. Jim and Betty were blessed with grandchildren, Jamie (Lynda), Adam (Kaylan), Lance, Jean-Phillippe, Hannah, Padraic, Brennan, Brittany, Tara (Chris) and Mathew and, more recently, they were blessed with their first great-grandchild, Rylan, the latest and greatest joy of their lives. According to Jim's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in St. Peter's Church in South Bay, Sunday, June 29 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Elliot Siteman officiating. A reception will follow in the Anglican Church hall in North Ingonish. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The family wishes to send special thanks to the nurses and staff at the Buchanan Memorial Hospital whose gentle love and care will forever be appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Neil's Harbour Palliative Care. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. Capt. Mary Jessie MacDonald Age 78, of River Ryan, Nova Scotia Friday, Dec.7, 2007 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, NS. Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Hugh & Mary (Beaton) MacDonald from Inverness County. In 1952, Mary Jessie emigrated to Boston from New Waterford, and lived in Brighton, Brookline, & Allston. Mary Jessie was employed at Honeywell Corp. in Brighton for twenty-seven years. When she retired in 2001, Mary Jessie returned to Cape Breton making her home in River Ryan. A piano player, Mary Jessie developed her unique interpretation of Celtic music through performing regularly with her mother, who was a noted Cape Breton fiddler; and Winston Fitzgerald with whom she played on the radio. As an accompanist she played at the Greenville Cafe, Dudley St., and the Orange Hall in Brookline and at the Canadian American Club in Waltham. Mary Jessies name became synonymous with fine violin music, as she was a regular accompanist to musicians such as Angus Chisholm, Winston Fitzgerald, Bill Lamey and Tom Doucette. On performing visits to the US, violinists from Scotland such as Sean McGuire, Hector Mac Andrew, Ronald Gonella and Alistair Fraser sought her accompaniment. Throughout her career she was a frequent guest at Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Port Townsend, WA and in 1988 Mary Jessie was honored for her contribution to American folk music by the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, where she performed with fiddler John Campbell for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Other highlights of her career in music include Expo '86 in Vancouver and the 2002 Celtic Colours Festival concert held in her honor entitled Fiddlers Choice. Mary Jessie played at hundreds of house sessions during her life and can be heard throughout the classic private tape collections. In 1951, she recorded with Winston Fitzgerald; later with Joe MacLean; in 1978 with her mother for a Topic Label LP entitled the Gaelic Tradition in Cape Breton. In recent years she recorded with fiddlers: Donald Angus Beaton, Dave MacIsaac, Natalie MacMaster and Bill Lamey. Mary Jessie will be remembered for her distinctive and compelling piano style and her commitment to musicianship and innovation. She is survived by one sister, Jessie (Edward) Archibald, Braintree, MA, and one brother, John Hugh (Mary) MacDonald, New Waterford. Also surviving are nieces of Nova Scotia: Mary Cecilia Senecal, Terry Bradbury and Sandy Lotherington. Margaret F. Cormier 92, of Nonantum, February 17, 2008, a long-time community activist in that section of the City of Newton, died Sunday morning at the Island Terrace Nursing Home in Lakeville, MA, following a long illness. She was the last surviving child of John and Lucy Cormier, who came to Newton in the early 1900's from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She is predeceased by her parents, two sisters, four brothers and a cousin who was raised as a member of the family. A 1933 graduate of Newton High School, she joined the Raytheon company, first as a vacuum tube assembler and then moving into bookkeeping, where she worked until her retirement in the 1970's. She was a devoted member and participant as a lector in the Masses of St. Jean l'Evangeliste Church (which her mother had a key role in building), known locally as "The French Church" until - in her own words - she was "chased from the altar" by the notorious Fr. Paul Shanley. Her mother Lucy Cormier had a key role as Chairman of the Funding Committee for the original French Church on Dalby St. in Newton. A familiar attendee at Newton City Hall at hearings affecting Nonantum, she was lifetime defender and spokesperson for the individuality of that area, familiarly called "The Lake." She was appointed by Newton Mayor Theodore Mann to the city's Nonantum Advisory Committee and served until her loss of mobility forced her to resign. She had a strong devotion to the extended Cormier family and nursed her sister Mary through the last years of Mary's life. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews. Visiting hours are Wednesday 4-8pm at the Andrew J. Magni & Son F.H., 365 Watertown St, Rt. 16, NEWTON. Funeral Mass Thursday at 10:30AM at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton, with burial in the Cormier family plot in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline. _www.magnifuneralhome.com_ (http://www.magnifuneralhome.com/) Published in the Boston Globe from 2/19/2008 - 2/20/2008.
