    3. Thanks Nigel I am going to see if I can track a copy down. A bit off topic but when I was in Saint John (The Loyalist City) at a Board of Director's meeting one night I referred to the Loyalists as America's first draft dodgers. Well, I though Mayor Elsie Wayne would go off her stick - she sure didnt like that remark and wanted me to retract it. Being a bull headed Caper I of course wouldnt and wanted to debate it. lol George ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nigel Service" <nigel.service@gmail.com> To: <NS-CAPE-BRETON@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 3:46 PM Subject: [NS-CB] Loyalists and Layabouts > For those with Loyalist roots in Cape Breton, the hardcover book > "Loyalists > and Layabouts" by Stephen Kimber is in abundance at Costco in Halifax in > large inventory. She missed the ocean, loved to have company and enjoyed getting dressed up for every occasion. 3. Re: [NS-CB] Edward Jessome / Eliza Ann Young / Elizabeth SomersThis is very good detective work. I saw Elizabeth Somers as the mother of Thomas on his death registration, but since it was completed by the son of Thomas, I assumed the grandson was unfamiliar with his grandmother's maiden name. I have notice that is not uncommon. I have a birth date of Aug. 1833 for Elizabeth Ann Young. I got it from Eric Burton zaxciel@hotmail.com, Mi'kmaq-Young - Lejeune-Benoit-Burton family tree. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=zaxciel&id=I13. That could make Elizabeth Ann 19 at the birth of Thomas. I don't know what Eric used for a source, but I will send him an email. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: Laurie To: 'Lark Szick' ; '.Charlene McKenzie' ; 'Betty Almon Felhaber' Cc: NS-CAPE-BRETON@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2008 11:42 PM Subject: Edward Jessome / Eliza Ann Young / Elizabeth Somers Great suggestion, Lark, thanks - unfortunately I've checked the names on www.novascotiagenealogy.com, anything starting with Som and Sum, even without a first name, and nothing comes close to either a death or a marriage of Eliza Somers or Young for the dates we would be looking for. The following website shows Thomas Jesso as the son of Edward and Elizabeth Ann Young (married about 1851 and Thomas born 09 Oct 1852 (day/month same as death certificate - but the year is 2 years off): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~friendsandfamily/jesso.htm. But I've found other errors in those pages, so not quite reliable I guess (the site asks for corrections, but I can't find an e-mail address to send to - as the death date for Emelia (Emma Jane) Deveaux is not correct according to www.novascotiagenealogy.com. If anyone knows the author, I have a couple verified corrections that I could provide. Anyway, back to Edward Jessome and his wife Eliza/beth Young/Somers: Now the 1901 census has Elizabeth's birth date as Aug 1839. She would have been far too young to have had Thomas in 1850, even 1852. The 1881 census has Elizabeth's birth date as 1836. Again, a little too young to be having Thomas as 1850, and even 1852 is a little too close at 16 years old. There's a burial record as follows - which would give Elizabeth's birth date as 1837 - again, she's young to be having Thomas in 1850/1852 PIONEER CEMETERY Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton County, NS Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Jessome, 19 Dec 1912 age 75 yrs For my own tree, I'm going to stick with Elizabeth Somers as the first wife, with a disclaimer of the validity of that information. Hopefully, I'll get to Bras d'Or within the next year or so and will be able to check the church records. I'm actually going to Cape Breton in a couple weeks, so maybe I can fit in a trip. I know my husband would love to get the chance to touch base with his Mi'kmaq roots. If any of you find anything that can help me target a little closer to what I need to look for, please let me know. I think I would start at marriages around 1848/1849 to at least 1853 and then births between 1849 and 1854 to see what I come up with. Thanks for this great exchange of info!! 1. [NS-CB] Edward Jessome / Eliza Ann Young / Elizabeth Somers
    2. Laurie
    3. Well, I'm not quite sure now on Edward Jessome, wife Eliza/Elizabeth and a son Thomas. Edward Jessome and Elizabeth Young are on the 1881 Canada Census as follows - and I can find marriage records at www.novascotiagenealogy.com for most of the listed children - all showing Eliza or Elizabeth Young as the mother. There's no Thomas, but he is old enough to have left home. Name  Marital Status Gender Ethnic Origin Age Birthplace Edward JESSOME   M   Male   French   60   Nova Scotia    Eliza JESSOME   M   Female   French   45   Nova Scotia  Andrew JESSOME      Male   French   26   Nova Scoti Joseph JESSOME      Male   French   25   Nova Scotia   John JESSOME      Male   French   23   Nova Scotia  Edward JESSOME      Male   French   20   Nova Scotia    Hensey JESSOME      Male   French   16   Nova Scotia    Francis JESSOME      Male   French   14   Nova Scotia  J. Thomas' marriage record just shows Edward & Eliza as parents - so it could be either Somers or Young. Our Edward must have married Elizabeth Somers first, had Thomas, assuming Elizabeth dies shortly after, he then marries Eliza/beth Ann Young and has a zillion more children. If you find anything that either proves or disproves that theory, please let me know. 3. Hi all.... I don't know a thing about the Jessomes, but I do know kindness and cooperation when I see it, and I think it's wonderful all the sharing that goes on with this list. I have received so much help with my Nicholsons and just think that since it's Canada Day, I can go out on a limb and be a little bit emotional and "off topic" and say thanks to everybody who takes the time to help (sometimes) total strangers with their families. It's inspiring. Jane Nicholson

    3. Hi Laurie, I have much the same information you have. The family of Thomas Jessome & Emma Jane Devoe had three Elizabeths! Elizabeth Leva born 1880 must have died young. There were two other Elizabeths. One Elizabeth (went by Libby) married John George Boutilier and James Carbery. The other Elizabeth married Ralph Boutilier. The following is the info I have collected on them: Baptism at St. Joseph’s, L’Bras d’Or of Sibie Jessome, daughter of Thomas Jessome & Emma Jane Jessome, born between 1899/07/03 & Easter Sunday, Godparents: Walter Jessome and Eliza Jessome She was Libbi in 1901 census-b. Mar 21, 1900 age ca 1899, Mar 1901 in 1911 census The same Elizabeth Jesso, born Mill Creek, spinster, age 19 (ca 1900) d/o Thomas Jesso & Emma Devoe married John George Boutilier, miner, bachelor, age 27 (ca 1892) , s/o John Boutilier & Mary Martin, born at Sydney Mines, residence Alder Point. Marriage date June 17, 1919, L’Bras d’Or Catholic, Witnesses Louis Jesso & Caroline Moore. Elizabeth signed her name Libby Jesso. NSARM has her name Jibby Jessome. John Boutilier died in 1921 and Libby was a widow when she married James Carbery in 1923 James Carbery, bachelor age 27 born at Mill Creek, s/o Edward Carbery & Annie Hillan married Elizabeth Jessome Boutilier, widow, age 23, (ca 1900) born at Mill Creek, d/o Thomas Jessome & Emma Devoe, Aug 26, 1923 L’Bras d’Or Catholic. She signed her name Libby Jessome Boutilier. Witnesses were Ralph Boutilier & Elizabeth Jessome. Now, this is what I have on the other Elizabeth who married Ralph Boutilier: Elizabeth, d/o Thomas Jessome & Emma Jane Devoe, born Sept 4, 1904 Mill Creek, baptised at L’Bras d’Or, Godparents: Charles Moore and Lottie Rasmus Elizabeth Jessome, age 22, (ca 1903) spinster, born at Mill Creek, d/o Thomas Jessome (b. Mill Creek & Emma Devoe, witnesses John Thomas Jessome, Mill Creek, & Theresa Boutilier Headstone: Boutlier In memory of Ralph Boutlier 1906 - 1943 His wife Elizabeth Jessome 1904 - 1962 "Rest in Peace" Footstones "Mother" and "Father" I don't think she went by Libby. 3. Hi all Happy Canada Day! I wonder if anyone can help me with my research? I live in England and my Great Aunt, Sarah Ann Williamson (nee Hickman) emigrated to Canada in 1927 with her husband, George and their 3 children George H., Frederick and Reginald. George H., I know, had a lumber business in Blackett's Lake and I also know that Sarah, George, George H and Reg are all deceased and interred at Dr John Pringle Memorial Cemetery. My Grandmother (who brought me up) used to correspond quite regularly with someone who might have been either George H's wife or sister. I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who might be connected or have information. Regards Michael Harris-Hickman --------------------------------- Not happy with your email address?
