Think of dit names much like the naming system the Scots and/or the early Cape Bretoners. First, in the old days families were large and people did not move far away from their ancestral home. A single couple could easily have as many as 80 - 100 grandchildren. If the original parents were John and Mary, probably only two of their offspring would be named John and Mary, but the next generation would have ten Johns and ten Marys. If you are a grandparent and have ten grandsons named John, how do you differentiate? Likewise, how would the grandchildren identify each other? So you get big John, little John, old John, red John, John Alex (alex's son), Michael John (Michael's son), John the Post, etc. Over the years these become formalized. Now if an unrelated family with the same surname suddenly appears how would their son John be identified? John the stranger? John from away? John dit carpenter? John fitz Henry? Just a thought
Good morning, This is off topic in a way. I have a paining or colored photograph signed by an N. MacLeod. A friend was at the house yesterday and he recognized it as a location near his great grandfather's property near Long Island, Cape Breton. The picture has "Bras D'Or Lakes" written on the matting. Can any one lead me to where I might find out more about N/ MacLeod and his work? I appreciate any suggestions with this. Thank you, Rosemary McLean

And "dit" is the third person singular (present tense) of the French verb dire ("to say") (ie. Il dit - he says) , so "dit" often translated into "called", such as Pierre dit Lombard (Pierre "called himself" Lombard, to perhaps differentiate himself from other) Maybe another tiny hint. An arpent is a French way of measuring land. It's equal to 100 square perches (A perche is a French equivalent of the English rod). A square perche is 368 square feet, so calculated out one square arpent would be .84 of an acre. "Dit" names are complicated. It seems the French liked to add onto family names to identify one family from another. The "dit" name can represent any number of things, most often the area from where they came (usually in France). It was also used to recognize ownership of land passed down through the family, or to recognize ancient family names. Sometimes it was used to keep the existing French name while standardizing the name to something more local. I believe there is also some military attachment to some of the names. Briard, I believe, tells you the area of France from where they came, and there are several "Brie" towns near Larochelle which might seem likely for the Lejeune name. Hope that helps, Laurie -----Original Message----- From: ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Karen M Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2008 5:15 PM To: NS-CAPE-BRETON@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NS-CB] translation question I've been doing some research on the french side of my family and have a question. I was at the archives in Halifax today and was unable to get the following obits due to same being unable to read. One was very faint and the other one was crinkled in the corner and thus unreadable. First one is for Effie Belle MacLean SLATER, Published the Sydney Post Record 11 MAR 1952, page 3, lower right part of page. Second one is for Kenneth MacRAE. published in Sydney Post Record 2 OCT 1946, page 9. It is in the top right hand corner of the page and when photographed , the page was bent so that I could not get the info. It is only the first paragraph that I need. I have the second paragraph. I would appreciate SKS who might be at the Beaton in the next few days or has a copy of either obituary to forward same to me. Don
Cape Breton Post July 08, 2008 Ottawa supports Cape Breton's Magazine Centre for Documentary and Fields Studies ENGLISHTOWN - Canadians across the country will soon be able to access Cape Breton Island's rich cultural heritage online, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada. MP Gerald Keddy (South Shore-St. Margaret's) has announced funding on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, funding for Cape Breton's Magazine Centre for Documentary Fields Studies. Cape Breton's Magazine Centre for Documentary Fields Studies will receive $105,100 in funding to digitize and post its entire run of issues from 1971 to 1999 on the web. Its project, Read Cape Breton Online, will allow all Canadians to access over 5,000 pages of stories, interviews, folklore, songs, and poetry about the multicultural heritage of Cape Breton Island. The site will also include interactive activities for students and the general reader. "The Government of Canada is proud to support projects that showcase the richness and the diversity of our culture and heritage," said Verner. "By digitizing its issues and putting them on the web, Cape Breton's Magazine will be able to share the island's heritage with Canadians across the country." "Projects such as this underscore the potential of the Internet to give Canadians greater access to our culture," said Keddy. "I am proud that our government is contributing to the success of a project that will enable all Canadians, regardless of geographic location, to access the rich culture and history of Cape Breton Island." "I deeply appreciate this vote of confidence in the lasting value of Cape Breton's Magazine, by not only the Government of Canada but also by our partners, the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board and Nova Scotia Archive and Records Management," said Ronald Caplan, editor of Cape Breton's Magazine. The Government of Canada has provided this financial assistance through the Partnerships Fund, a component of the Department of Canadian Heritage's Canadian Culture Online strategy. This program strives to increase the amount of quality Canadian cultural content on the Internet and engages Canadians to use the content and share their perspectives on Canadian events, people and values.

I just read one of Lark's previous messages where he notes that John's parents were John Joseph Young and Jane Lejeune (not Leguire). I've been looking at every Young/Lejeune record I can find - but no luck yet on these two. Published in the Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on 7/5/2008 Raymond Keating Raymond Joesph Keating September 20, 1928 - June 24, 2008 God saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered, "Peace be thine." It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Francis Keating on June 24, 2008 at Surrey Memorial Hospital. In his 79 years he was blessed with a loving family and more friends than he could count. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 50 years Patricia, his three children Mike (Laura), Kathy (Mike) and Raymond (Leigh Anne), his grandchildren Scott, Terra, Justine, Caitlyn, Bailie and his brother Frank. He was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on September 20, 1928 to Michael and Catherine Keating and he kept true to his Irish routes with his gift of story telling and advice giving. No matter where he went he always managed to find someone from Nova Scotia to talk to and swap stories with. If you couldn't find Ray on the golf course he was probably hitting someone up in the community for prizes for his latest golf tournament or a school fundraiser. You knew when you saw him coming that you may as well just give him something, because if you didn't, he would just guilt you into it by telling you he would go to church and pray for you. You know he never left empty handed. We ask that everyone that was touched by him to please join us for A CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE on August 24 from 1:00PM - 5:00PM at 7719 - 117th Street, Delta, BC. submitted by Muriel king <meank@bcsupernet.com>

Hello, I'm sorta jumping in the middle here, but my records show Thomas Jesso (b 1835), married to Elizabeth Ryan was a brother to Edward Jesso (b n1826 d @1926 married to Elizabeth Ann Young(b Aug 1839 buried 1939 Millcreek), they were married 1851 Bras d'or CB. Parents of Thomas and Edward were Andre Josseaume and Marguerite Lejeune. The Thomas born in 1852 was married to Emeila Jane Desveauz. Hope I'm not adding to the puzzle.
