    3. Hi Julie, Almon is a French name common in the Little Bras d'Or area. It has been found as Almon=Almond=Almong=Allemand. Louis L'Allemond was born ca 1768 in France. He was the son of Jean- Michel L'Allemond and Henriette-Julienne Caplain. He settled at George's River near Little Bras d'Or and married Francoise Jessome. They probably met in Miquelon. Gerry was born in Glace Bay, N.S., and was one of 10 children born to Thomas Rogers and Mary MacInnis. After graduation from high school, she went on to Teachers College and taught school in New Aberdeen, N.S. She then left for an adventure teaching school in Vulcan, Alta., and spent summers working at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton, Alta. Upon returning to Nova Scotia, she married Ed MacDonald of Sydney. Gerry gave up her teaching career to care for her five children (twins, Cathy and Pat, followed shortly by Janice and Bob, with David arriving a little later). She and Ed then moved to Moncton to raise their family and this proved to be a very busy time with four children under the age of three. Coming from a teaching background, Gerry felt strongly about the importance of education and learning, and was very pleased when all her children completed a post-secondary education. Her independent and adventurous spirit was demonstrated by her frequent travels to California, Arizona, Alberta and Newfoundland (and included horseback riding with her sons in western Canada not so long ago!). She also enjoyed the many telephone calls and visits over the years from friends that she and Ed met along the way. Gerry loved her grandchildren more than anything and laughter always surrounded them as they shared stories or played cards and board games together. Her brown sugar fudge, cinnamon rolls and brownies, were special treats enjoyed by all. A frequent topic of conversation was her happy childhood growing up in Glace Bay, N.S., and she would regale her audience with any number of stories from that time. Special memories were of summers spent in Shediac, N.B., where Gerry was surrounded by family, friends, sun and ocean. Another love of Gerry's was flowers, which she planted faithfully each year and was especially fond of roses and Sweet William. Dancing was a favourite activity and she and Ed would attend many a 'Legion' dance with friends. Gerry enjoyed many years of volunteer work teaching religious education to elementary school children in Moncton. Although her health was failing over the past several years, Gerry loved nothing better than sharing a cup of tea with family and friends and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Gerry was predeceased by her husband Ed, brothers, William and Harold and sisters, Dorothy, Bridget and Camilla. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine McJannet (Larry and son Ian), San Diego, Patricia Edmonds (Cyril and daughters Colleen and Jennifer), Moncton, Janice Mellish (Robert and sons David, Jimmy -Sarah, sons Logan and Ethan, Andrew and Michael), Robert, Calgary and David (Marilynne), Calgary; brothers, Thomas Rogers, Glace Bay, Angus Rogers, New Waterford; and sisters, Mary Penny, Glace Bay, and Priscilla Wojcik, Sydney. As she wished, cremation has already taken place. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 23 from 7-9 p.m. at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. 2. Carol MacLean
    3. Cape Breton Post July 17, 2008 Life before the fortress Beyond the Fog explores stories of families whose homes became national historic site BY LAURA JEAN GRANT CAPE BRETON POST LOUISBOURG - Looking through a copy of her self-published book, Elaine Sawlor can't help but beam. "I call it my bouncing baby book. It feels like a birth," said the first-time author during an interview at her home in Sydney. "It's been the only thing on my mind for two years." Beyond the Fog explores the stories of the 81 families whose expropriated properties were developed into the Fortress of Louisbourg. Through hundreds of photographs and dozens of family stories, the book tells the stories of founding families in Fort Louisbourg, West Louisbourg, Kennington Cove and Deep Cove from 1758 to the mid-1960s. A book launch for Beyond the Fog will take place Friday at 5 p.m. at the Joseph Trimm Community Centre in Louisbourg. All are welcome. Sawlor's grandparents were among the 81 families relocated to make way for reconstruction of the fortress and her mother, Marie (Kennedy) Mullins was born and raised in Louisbourg. Growing up, Sawlor spent many summers in Louisbourg and developed an interest in the history of the coastal community. So, after retiring from teaching 11 years ago, Sawlor began researching her family and learned more about the former community and its residents. About two years ago, organizers of an 'Old Town' reunion approached Sawlor with the idea of compiling a history forthe reunion which is set to take place this weekend in Louisbourg. She agreed. "I had no idea what I was doing. I thought it would just take a couple of months," she recalled. "It was a massive job and an all-consuming job." >From archives at the Fortress of Louisbourg to countless hours tracking down descendants of the families, Sawlor immersed herself in research, information and photos of all 81 families. "My own family was the hardest to trace," said Sawlor, noting it took years to follow her roots back as far as her great, great grandfather. Beyond the Fog contains two pages of text and photos on each of the 81 families. "It's a very personal kind of book where it looks at every family," she said. "There are over 300 photographs in the book and probably 300 I couldn't put in because the book was already 236 pages. I think the photography makes the book." Copies of Beyond the Fog will be available at the book launch, or by calling Sawlor at 539-6121. For more information visit the website at www.beyondthefog.ca. ljgrant@cbpost.com

    3. Cape Breton Post July 17, 2008 CBU library commemorates 250th anniversary of the second siege of Louisbourg SYDNEY - Cape Breton University Library is marking the 250th anniversary of the second siege of Louisbourg by featuring first-hand accounts of the siege published in the Gentleman's Magazine. These accounts can be viewed on the Library's website at: www.cbu.ca/library <http://www.cbu.ca/library> . The Gentleman's Magazine was published in London from 1731 until the early 20th century, providing its "genteel" readership with a monthly digest of news, opinion, literature and scientific discovery of the day. It is generally considered the first "magazine" and, in its first years, it had a larger circulation and impact than any other periodical of the time. Dr. Robert Campbell, director of CBU's library, points out that: "Just as Samuel Johnson, who began his illustrious career writing for Gentleman's Magazine, was of the opinion that London was the centre of the civilized world, Gentleman's Magazine was seen to contain all the information about the world that a civilized person needed to know." Cape Breton University Library holds a complete run of the Gentleman's Magazine from 1731-1868. It is part of the Dr. Thomas J. Khattar Collection that was donated in 1981 by Jessie Khattar and her children in honour of Dr. Thomas J. Khattar, husband and father, who died in 1966. The collection includes approximately 4,000 individual items that were painstakingly collected by Dr. Khattar throughout his professional career. The collection includes books on the early history and culture of Cape Breton Island; the political and social history of New France, Nova Scotia and Canada; mining and fishing, sporting interests, geography and literature. There is also valuable material on the history and culture of the Middle East. In part because of the age and fragility of materials, items in the collection do not circulate. However, the collection is benefiting from a project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The goal of this three-year project is to promote and preserve the collection, as well as give better access to its content. Currently, CBU Library is highlighting material on Louisbourg published in the Gentleman's Magazine from 1747-60 which was scanned and described by Lachlan MacKinnon, a CBU student, who is working on the project. MacKinnon has also compiled an annotated bibliography of the collection, which includes links to digitized versions of more rare titles found in the Dr. Thomas J. Khattar Collection. This bibliography will be linked from CBU Library's website and searchable from the Web later in the summer.

    3. Cape Breton Post July 17, 2008 Glace Bay woman celebrates her 100th birthday BY SHARON MONTGOMERY CAPE BRETON POST GLACE BAY - It would be hard to top this guest of honour. A luncheon was held Wednesday at the Miners' Village Restaurant in Glace Bay for Fanny Cohen of Glace Bay who was celebrating her 100th birthday. "She is such a wonderful lady, still sharp as a tack," said Rodger Cuzner, MP for Cape Breton-Canso. "In her closing comments she was thanking all those who came, quoting William Shakespeare and even reciting three or four lines from Hamlet. "She is 100! I couldn't do that in my Grade 11 English class." Cuzner presented Cohen with a congratulatory note from Queen Elizabeth II. The celebration was organized by Cohen's niece Leone Bushkin and nephew Arthur Bland, both of New York, and included an emotional video presentation of various aspects of Cohen's life. "The great story of her life is her teaching," Bushkin said. "She taught for 46 years, thousands of children." "The letters she has received this week from students she taught 30, 40 years ago in the primary ... it is amazing. "Flowers have arrived from British Columbia - you don't get all this unless you have given." Cohen excitedŠCont. from page A1 Cohen was born and raised in Glace Bay and is the last surviving member of the family of six headed by the late Esther and Harry Cohen. She was always active with the Jewish community and at age 90 was president of the Glace Bay Chapter of Canadian Hadassah. Cohen was involved with the teacher's union and on a committee instrumental in bringing the Glace Bay Library to Glace Bay, 50 years ago. Bland said she also has a special charisma. "It is her humour and her wit. She is also very sharp, has a tremendous memory, able to recall events and details without hesitation." The day before the party, Cohen said she was excited. "I am looking forward to this so much, I can't wait. The sentimentality is so engraved in me, I hope it doesn't take over too much." She was excited about receiving the message from the queen. "I knew she wouldn't leave me out." Cohen enjoys crossword and decoding puzzles and is an avid reader, enjoying mysteries. How is she so healthy at age 100? "I think I was lucky. I inherited the best genes from both parents," Cohen said. "Add that with my positive attitude to life, that's what does it." smontgomery@cbpost.com
