Vancouver Sun August 16, 2008 "Young sailor's diary reveals maritime life in 1790" by Richard Savill - Bristol, England A record of life below decks in the Royal Navy between 1790 and 1833, penned by a sailor who served in the era of Lord Nelson, has been unearthed. The diary of George Hodge, a lowly sailor, contains colour paintings and the words to sea shanties that he heard sung. The self-educated seaman, who spells words as they sound, begins the journal: George Hodege, his Book Consisting of Difrint ports & ships that I hace sailed in since the year 1790, Aged 13 years" He recorded details of the ladies of easy virtue with whom he associated, and painted pictures of ships and flags as well as a self-portrait. Hodge lists one or two skirmishes, but many entries cover the mundane activities of life on board vessels. He began his career as a cabin boy in coaling cessels between Northunberland and London. In 1794, he travelled to a Russian Baltic port and on the way back was captured by the French, but was then sent home in a cartel sloop. He was captured again in 1797, but was returned home and spent months on the run from press gangs. But in 1798, he was caught and joined the 64-gun ship Lancaster. For the next nine years, he served along the west African coast and in Celyon and the East Indies. In 1808, he joined the 74-gun Marlborought and spent the years until 1812. In 1815, he returned to Britain and served at Greenwich, ending his career in the merchant navy. An addition made after his death shows he had children. The 500-page journal includes list of ships and their guns, lists of crew, and a list of 192 flag formations. These includeL "1. An enemy is in sight 2. Prepare for battle 3. Sail by divisions.. 5. Engage in enemy (If red penant shown, engage more closely)... 10. Enemy retreating at full speed" Hodge writes that he was born "In the Parish of Tinmouth in the County of Northumberland", and that his career began under "Capt Edger" who commanded the "brig Margerey" The journel belonged to the maritime collection of an American, J.Welles Henderson, who died last year. He bought it at a book shop in London in the 1980's. It is now up for auction and expected to fetch about $60,000 Cdn. "Retouching family history" In the age of photoshop, ex-husbands magically disappear. Mom is younger. Dad has more hair. And everyone is together and smiling, in a big portrait By ALEX WILLIAMS The New York Times Wed. Aug 20 - 4:46 AM After her divorce, Laura Horn, second from right, decided to have her ex-husband removed from the picture, bottom, with Photoshop. The favourite software for photographers is being used by ordinary citizens to, um, enhance those family snapshots. (These photo's can be seen when going to the url listed above.. Attachments are not permitted on mailing lists.) NEW YORK - Removing her ex-husband from more than a decade of memories may take a lifetime for Laura Horn, a police emergency dispatcher in Rochester, N.Y. But removing him from a dozen years of vacation photographs took only hours, with some deft mouse work from a willing friend who was proficient in Photoshop, the popular digital-image editing program. Like a Stalin-era technician in the Kremlin removing all traces of an out-of-favour official from state photos, the friend erased the husband from numerous cherished pictures taken on cruises and at Caribbean cottages, where he had been standing alongside Horn, now 50, and other traveling companions. "In my own reality, I know that these things did happen," Horn said. But "without him in them, I can display them. I can look at those pictures and think of the laughter we were sharing, the places we went to. "This new reality," she added, "is a lot more pleasant." As image-editing software grows in sophistication and ubiquity, alterations go far beyond removing red-eye and whitening teeth. They include substituting head shots to achieve the best combination of smiles, deleting problematic personalities or adding family members who were unable to attend important events, performing virtual liposuction or hair restoration, even reanimating the dead. Revisionist history, it seems, can be practiced by just about anyone. As people fiddle with the photos in their scrapbooks, the tug of emotion and vanity can win out over the objective truth. And in some cases, it can even alter memories - Cousin Andy was at the wedding, right? In an age of digital manipulation, many people believe that snapshots and family photos need no longer stand as a definitive record of what was, but instead, of what they wish it was. "It used to be that photographs provided documentary evidence, and there was something sacrosanct about that," said Chris Johnson, a photography professor at California College of the Arts in the Bay Area. If you wanted to remove an ex from an old snapshot, you had to use a Bic pen or pinking shears. But in the digital age, people treat photos like mash-ups in music, combining various elements to form a more pleasing whole. "What we're doing," Johnson said, "is fulfilling the wish that all of us have to make reality to our liking." And he is no exception. When he photographed a wedding for his girlfriend's family in upstate New York a few years ago, he left a space at the end of a big group shot for one member who was unable to attend. They caught up with him months later, snapped a head shot, and Johnson used Photoshop to paste him into the wedding photo. Now, he said, everyone knows it is phony, but "this faked photograph actually created the assumption - people kind of remember him as there." The impulse to record family history that is more wishful than accurate is as old as photography itself. In the 19th century, people routinely posed with personal items, like purses or scarves, that belonged to absent or dead relatives to include them, emotionally, in the frame, said Mary Warner Marien, an art history professor at Syracuse University and the author of Photography: A Cultural History. In India, she said, it is a tradition to cut-and-paste head shots of absent family members into wedding photographs as a gesture of respect and inclusion. "Everyone understands that it's not a trick," she said. "That's the nature of the photograph. It's a Western sense of reality that what is in front of the lens has to be true." 'In my own reality, I know that these things did happen. Without (her ex-husband) in them, I can display them. I can look at those pictures and think of the laughter we were sharing, the places we went to. This new reality is a lot more pleasant.' LAURA HORN
