Born in England, he came to Cape Breton at an early age, served with the Canadian Army in Italy during the Second World War, and was employed at Caledonia Colliery until its closure. Member of the Donkin Legion, he is survived by his wife, and three sons, George in Parry Sound; Roy and William in Toronto; two brothers, James in Toronto; Robert in Donkin; five sisters, Mrs. James Sweeney in Toronto; Mrs. Robert Snow, Mrs. Steve Gardiner, Mrs. William Dunn, and Mrs. Marguerite Crinkey, all in West Virginia, U.S.A. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, MacLeod's Crossing. Born in Reserve, he worked in No. 10 colliery, but was not able to work since injuries in a mining accident 27 years ago. Halifax Herald March 14, 1966 Mrs. J. Thaddee Hebert (Yvonne Leblanc) passed away in Montreal following a short illness. Born in Arichat, Cape Breton, in 1895, she was the daughter of Doctor Aime A. Leblanc and Sabine-Rose Bellefontaine, respectively from St. Joseph, N.B. and Arichat, N.S. After graduating from the Normal School in Truro, she attended the University of Alberta and was for several years a teacher in French in Alberta and New Brunswick. In 1926, she married the late Joseph Thaddee Hebert, barrister in Campbellton, N.B. Several years after his death in 1932, she moved to Montreal with her children. Very active in historical matters, she was a member of the Historical Society of Montreal, la Societe de Genealogie and la Societie l'Assomption. She is survived by her two daughters Mrs. Gabrielle Fortin and Jeanne Mance Dufaux and her son Laurier, her sons-in-law, Dr. Armand Fortin and Georges Dufaux, and six grandchildren. Also her sisters, the Misses Corrinne and Clarisse Leblanc of Edmonton,! her brother, Leon Leblanc, pharmacist, her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Raymond A Leblanc (Gabrielle) of Meteghan, and Mrs. Leon Leblanc (Alma) of Montreal plus several cousins in Canada and the United States. Cape Breton Deaths August 29, 2008 Friday Evelyn (Connors) MacDonald 80, Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn (Connors) MacDonald peacefully at home on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008. Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, she was born in Glace Bay and was the daughter of the late George and Lillian (Jessome) Connors. Evelyn resided with her children on Wood Street for many years before moving to the MacDonald's Lane Complex, Glace Bay. She will be lovingly missed by her sons, James, Manitoba, Michael, Nova Scotia; daughters, Sharon, New Brunswick, and Lillian, Ontario. Evelyn is also survived by four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Audrey Kennedy, Sanda Locke, Lola Duckworth and one brother, Terry Connors. Evelyn cherished every moment with family and friends and really enjoyed "fighting" a good game of cards. Cremation has taken place. She was the daughter of the late Anthony and Angelina MacDonald of D'Escousse. She was heavy involved all her life with the Liberal association. She was also a cursiesta and was involved in many aspects of the church and community. She was very involved with the CWLs of both Sacred Heart Church and St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, and the friends of the MacGillivray Guest Home. She was also a member of the Steelworkers and Sydney Pensioners Club. Theresa was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 12 and belonged to the branch's ladies auxiliary. Theresa leaves to mourn her children, daughter, Gail (George) Rossos; son, Greg (Helena); grandchildren, Lewis (Cindy), Belinda (Clint) MacLean, David, Daniel, George, all of Sydney, and Donna (Bernie) Cameron, Havelock, N.B; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Breaghna, Krysta, Jade, Amber and Scarlett; sister, Ethel (Freddie) Martin; sister in-law, Loretta MacDonald and Mary MacDonald. Listed in Whycocomagh Village page 3 . It listed her as born in NS. I do not know if this is the family but it is the only listing for Angus and Catherine. Catherine is the Mother and Angus is the son. She would be about the right age. Cape Breton Deaths August 26, 2008 Tuesday Valentine Edwin Singer Feb. 15, 1916-Aug. 25, 2008 Sydney Mines - On Aug. 25, 2008, an honourable and loving gentleman we knew as father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Poole, Dorset, England, Ted was the only son of the late Edwin Joseph and Rose Alice (White) Singer. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Ted was educated in Courthill Grammar School, where he became captain and was referred to as 'The Math Whiz Kid,' graduating with honours in calculus at the age of 14. Gifted with a good voice, he became head choir boy at Saint Osmond's Cathedral, Bournemouth, and sang solo at Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury. He graduated from Bournemouth Municipal College with his degree in accounting and was employed by Bowmaker Investments, where he became head accountant at the age of 23, leaving in September 1939 to enlist in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves, and participated in the African Campaign of the Second World War. In 1945, while posted to H.M.S. Seaborne in Halifax, he met and married Mora Briers of Sydney Mines; his loving wife of 60 years. They took up residence in Poole, England, where Ted resumed his position as head accountant with Sydenham Printers, a subsidiary company of Bowmaker. Immigrating to Canada in 1955, he was employed as an accountant at Canada Packers, Sydney, until his retirement in 1981. During his retirement years, he served as an auditor for the Harbourview Ladies Auxiliary accounts and served as church secretary for his church, Trinity Anglican. Ted was an ardent sportsman, playing soccer for the Royal Navy and English Soccer League of Bournemouth. He was also accomplished in diving, tennis and cricket. Ted is survived by daughters, Lynda, Halifax, and Meryl (Hector) MacKenzie, Sydney; loving granddaughters, Sarah, Megan and Heather; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Evann and nephews and niece, Ian, Chris and Penny. Besides his wife, Mora, he was predeceased by his sisters, Lillian, Phyllis, Violet and Sylvia. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at 2 p.m., in Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, with the Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Mildred was the last surviving member of her Gillis family, having been predeceased by her parents Hugh N and Mary Lucy Gillis and siblings, Wilfred, Fr. John Hugh, Fr. Marcy, Fr. Lex, Sr. Mary, Rose and John Y. She was also predeceased by her husband, Willy 'Dan Y' and her infant son, Alphonsus. In her early days, Mildred worked as a station master for the CNR, work she loved but not less than her love of Celtic music and a good joke. She is survived by her children, Theresa, Dartmouth, Lily Gillis (Jimmie), Tantallon, Mel (Cathy), Sydney, Leonarda, Antigonish, and Gillis, at home; 11 grandchildren, Melissa, Carolyn and Allison MacNeil, Jennifer, Janine, Angeline, John Hugh, Jacinta and Stephanie Gillis and Jeffrey and Caitlyn MacKinnon. David was active in Barbershop and the Cape Breton Chorale, Masonic Lodge MacKay No. 115, Scottish Rite and Shriner's Philae Temple. David was past president of the Whitney Pier Y's Men Club and then served as district governor of Nova Scotia, regional director of the Maritimes and Canadian area president of Y's Men. He was a member of the North of Smokey Lion's Club. He was a tissue donor. David and Terry wintered in Florida where he was active with Sahib Temple of Sarasota in their choir and as Shrine Clown ("Stumpie.") Born in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Canada, he was the son of Willena (Boyd) Musgrave of Framingham and the late James Musgrave. He moved to Framingham at the age of 7 and had been a resident of Clark Street in Ashland for 28 years. He loved spending time with his family. >From the Patriot Ledger... Sophie E. Milley Hingham Sophie E. (MacQuarrie) Milley, 97, of Hingham, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 31st at her daughter's home in Titusville, FL. Born in Lexington, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada and orphaned at the age of 14, she and her siblings moved to Gloucester, MA to live with her aunts. Upon graduating from Gloucester High School in 1927, she went to Boston, where she was employed in the office of Sears & Roebuck until her marriage. She became a U.S. citizen in 1940 and a resident of Hingham in 1941. She belonged to the Old Scots Presbyterian Church in Boston and attended the First Baptist Church of Hingham and the Fort Square Presbyterian Church in Quincy. Sophie was also a 50 year member of the Amanda J. Bosworth Rebekah Lodge in Hingham. After 20 years at the Hingham Mutual Fire Insurance Co., she retired as a bookkeeper, and she and her husband Chesley W. Milley became Snowbirds and winter residents of Dunedin, FL. She was an avid reader and volunteered at the Hingham Public Library during her summers in Hingham. Sophie was preceded in death by her husband Chesley; brothers Allen and Donald MacQuarrie; and sisters, Katherine MacQuarrie and Jessie Morley. Sophie was the mother of Donald Milley and his wife Freda of Hingham and Evelyn Isbell of Titusville, FL. She was a retired Nurse who worked at BU School of Medicine, Research Unit, for 25 years. As Florence MacDonald, she participated in the 1928 Olympics at Amsterdam in the 800 meters for the USA. Deveau Age 86, of Henderson NV, formerly of Acton, died on August 14th, 2008. A native of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, he resided in Massachusetts for more than 70 years before moving to Nevada in 1999. He served in the United States Army during World War II, service for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laurel (Rigney) Deveau, of Henderson, NV; son, David Deveau, of Quincy, MA; daughter, Elizabeth Deveau, of Henderson, NV; grandson, Nicholas Deveau, of Milton, MA; brother, Donald Deveau, of Newburyport, MA; and sister, Elizabeth Strom, of Chelmsford, MA. Predeceased by one brother, Lee Deveau, and two sisters, Jean Jefferson and Tillie Brinton. Hawley Of Fort Walton Beach, FL, formerly of Lowell, MA died Saturday, May 24, 2008. Husband of the late Winifred (Kirkbright). He was born on March 28, 1910 in Ingonish, VT County, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. A son of William and Mary MacLeod Hawley. While living in Lowell, he was employed as a mechanic for John Brady and Sons and later for Ryder Truck Rental in Somerville MA. He was an avid race car fan, who for many years traveled to the Indy 500 at the Indianapolis Speedway. Survived by 2 sons: John Hawley and his wife Joan of North Chelmsford and Donald David Hawley of Fort Walton Beach, FL; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 6 great, great grandchildren; 1 great, great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Came across these... Henrietta M. Reita Andren Henrietta M. Reita Andren, 92 YARMOUTH -- Henrietta M. Reita Andren, 92, died peacefully on June 2, 2008, after a lengthy illness surrounded by those who loved her. She was born on Sept. 20, 1915, in Portland, the daughter of Angus MacKay Macdonald and Mary Fraser Macdonald. She was the widow of Oscar R. Andren Jr. who died in 1942. A brother, Angus Macdonald died in 1971. She was a graduate of Deering High School in the class of 1933 and Gorham Normal School. She received her graduate degrees from the University of Maine in Orono. For over 30 years she was a teacher and principal of Cottage Farms School in Cape Elizabeth. She thoroughly enjoyed her years there. The children were a delight to her and the parents very supportive of school activities such as taking trips, setting up libraries, assisting in sports, particularly on Champions Day. Mrs. Andren was a member of several educational organizations including the MTA and CCTA. She was a long time member of Woodfords Congregational Church, having attended from the age of four. She held many positions within the church; a teacher, deacon, governing board member and a visitor to the confined at home or in the hospital. For many years she was the church historian. She also served on the Board of the Protestant Hospital Ministry. Mrs. Andren enjoyed traveling, especially to Scotland, the birthplace of her mother. She also enjoyed traveling to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where her father was born. Her home in Stroudwater where she lived for over 50 years was known as the Wee House, Scotch for little house. She loved the out-of-doors and was never happier than when she was playing in her garden, where she delighted in visits from birds and animals and be-times would write little stories about them. She also enjoyed writing poetry, painting and creating clocks and lamps. Because of her loving nature, she had friends from all walks of life, of all ages and from all over the world. For the past seven years, Peg Emerson has not only been her devoted friend but her loving companion and caregiver, allowing her to continue to live in the home she loved. Mrs. Andren was a people person who enjoyed above all just being with friends. Visiting hours will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 6, at 11 a.m. at Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook.
