    3. Cape Breton Deaths September 19, 2008 Friday Kathleen M. (Fownes) MacDermid 1913-2008 - Kay MacDermid passed away peacefully at Alderwood Rest Home on Sept. 18, 2008. Born in Big Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mable (Wilson) Fownes and the last surviving member of her immediate family. Kay lived many of her married years in Beinn Bhreagh and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Kay was an active member of the Alexander Graham Bell Club and was the first worthy matron of the Victoria Chapter OES. She attended Greenwood United Church and the Glennis Farquhar Unit of the UCW. She was an avid bridge player, sailor and enjoyed various handicrafts. Kay is survived by her daughter, Jaunita (Douglas Macaulay); grandchildren, Rebecca, Kenneth, Macaulay, Darcy and Casey MacDermid and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenny, 1977 and son Charles, 2008. Visitation will take place Sunday, Sept. 21 from 7-9 p.m. in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Hubert and Dorothy (Dugid) LeDrew. Gordon was an excellent mechanic who owned/operated Mid Town Auto, with his lifelong friends and best buddies, Thomas Hawco and Thomas Hayes. Gordon loved his family. They were the reason he worked many long hours. Surviving are his wife, Karen (McLean); daughters, Kim Thistle (Ed), Sydney, Shelley McLean (Roger), Calgary, Sheila McLean (Darren), Ft. Donald James MacGuire, 85, of Old Route 5, Big Bras d'Or, passed away at home on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008. Born in Boston, Mass., he was a son of the late Rev. Donald and Kathleen (MacMillan) MacGuire. Knowing since he was just a boy that serving God was his calling, Rev. MacGuire went on to earn his arts degree at Memphis College in Tennessee and a bachelor degree in Divinity at Princeton. He then went on to preach in many parts of Alabama and Ohio, as well as, Philadelphia. Eventually, he studied at McGill University in Montreal, as well as studying from such masters as James Stewart at New College in Edinburgh, Scotland. Rev. MacGuire was a clergyman with the United Church of Canada, serving at Boularderie United Church for 33 years. In 1996, he retired after serving over 50 years in ministry. Surviving are his sister, Flora (Arthur) Dukes, Alabama and many extended family members living throughout Canada and the United States. Rev. MacGuire was predeceased by his sister, Jessie Donalda Broyles and brothers, Colin Herbert and Hugh Cameron MacGuire.There will be no visitation. Libby was born May 13, 1932, at Sydney Mines, N.S., the daughter of George and Irene Hay. Her teaching career took her from Sydney Mines and Florence to the Yukon Territories and British Columbia. Libby was an accomplished pianist and artist, and an avid gardener. She attended Zion United Church in Ashcroft, where she played piano and sang in the choir. She belonged to the B.C. Retired Teachers' Association and the Ashcroft Arts Club, displaying and selling many of her water-colours at district art shows. She is lovingly missed by her sisters, Sheila Lindholm of Seattle, Washington and Lillian MacKeigan of Sydney Mines, N.S.; nieces and nephews; dear friends and her special friend, Jim Gyoba, all of whom will especially miss her easy laughter. He passed away in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He is survived by his wife, May; children, Heather, Sylvia (Jet) and Deanne (Judith); grandchildren, Sean (Marylouise), Rana, Judah (Haleh), Heddy, Jayson, Jesse, Niki (Jeremy), Jessica and Tamra; great-grandchildren, Metej, Kasra, Nika, Seamus and Elsie-May. He was predeceased by children, David (1972) and Jeannie (1992). Born in Pleasant Bay, Alfred lived in Pollett's Cove his first three years; the family moved to the Lower Settlement of Pleasant Bay in 1922. Like his father, Alfred was a boat builder, fisherman and farmer. In 1940, he enlisted with the Cape Breton Highlanders and served in England, Italy and Holland. While stationed in Scotland, he met May Grant. She became the love of his life, and after the war, joined him in Cape Breton; they shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. In 1956, he moved his family to Edmonton, Alta., where he worked at Canada Packers until his retirement in 1981. The following year, they returned to Pleasant Bay. In his 'retirement' he was able to devote time to his favourite pursuits: building and renovating their homes, helping neighbours with their projects, playing cribbage, baking, and chipping away at the wood pile. He had friends from all over the world and he welcomed all to his home, where they would share stories and debate the political issues of the day. The family would like to extend a special thanks to friend, Dwayne Cote for helping Alfred pass so peacefully with his beautiful fiddle music. We thank Hollis Scott for being so kind, helpful and supportive. We also thank the caregivers on Unit 4C at the C.B. Regional Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital in Cheticamp and for the many others who assisted and supported us through this difficult time. Born in Bargeddi, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late William and Annie (Walker) Stevenson. Bessie was a member of First United Church, Sydney, and along with her husband, William was quite active with the Screaming Eagles Booster Club. She was an avid craftsperson who sold her knitting at the many local craft shows. Mom went to Heaven, surrounded by her devoted family on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at the age of 95. Born in Sydney, N.S., Aug. 13, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Florence MacNeil and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mom or 'Ma' as she was most affectionately known, was predeceased by her husband, Louis C. Surette, her eldest son, Lou and her youngest daughter, Linda. Also predeceased by brothers, John, Vince, Eddie, Jimmy and Jackie and by sisters, Maude, Maggie, Katie, Cecelia, Rosie, Elizabeth and Vange. Mom is survived by sons, Jimmy (Judy), Eddie (Mary), Cliff (Renie) and her special son, Neil, at home; daughters, Mary Rose, Judy and Dianne; 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mom's love of family and deep religious faith sustained her throughout her life. She was a faithful member of St. Theresa's parish and a member of the CWL. Mom's door was always open to family and friends and we will always cherish her sunny disposition and great sense of humour. When you entered her home, she would leave you no choice, but to have a 'bite to eat', which always included some of her delicious home baking. Mom's favourite pastimes were spent baking and tending to her garden, which she lovingly developed throughout the years. Although her passing has left a deep void in our lives, we are extremely grateful to have had our Mom with us for so many years. She has left her family a legacy which we are so proud to carry on. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Margaret (MacIntyre) Pickup. In her early years, she worked at Hinchey's Supermarket on Plummer Avenue. In her later years, Pic worked at the New Waterford Hospital as a ward clerk. Her time there was very rewarding for her because she loved to help people. Pic was an avid bowler in her early days. Her passion was her faith in God and music. Coming from a very musical family, Pic loved to play the piano, and sang for many years in St. Agnes Choir and the New Waterford Choral. She also took great pride in being a member of the Catholic Women's League. She held her friends there in high regard for their work in the community. Pic loved going to TOPS and the pensioners club and enjoyed the company of all her friends. Cape Breton Deaths September 16, 2008 Tuesday Vera Ann Clements 1962 - 2008 - On Sept. 6, 2008, Alonzo 'Lonnie' and Sylvia (Strickland) Clements received news from overseas in Scotland of the passing of their cherished daughter Vera Ann. Born and raised in Glace Bay, Vera was a graduate of Morrison High School in 1980. She attended UCCB and attained her BACS in 1983. Throughout the years, Vera was a dedicated member and volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada. She was also part of the founding membership of AFTEC Society of Glace Bay and surrounding areas. Vera was also associated with the Elizabeth Fry Society. In 1986, Vera's compassion and ability to help others would take her overseas to Scotland, where she touched the hearts and lives of many appreciative people. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and co-workers in Scotland. Besides her parents, Vera is survived by her three brothers, Noel (Maureen), Shawn and Scott (Ann). Also survived by nieces, Nadine and Jennifer and nephew, Jeff. Many aunts, uncles and cousins are also left to mourn for Vera. Margaret Harrietha 'Marg' passed away Sept. 12, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Marg spent most of her life working at Moirs in Halifax and moved home when she retired. Her passing occurred at the City Hospital over the week-end and followed a general illness. Coming to Sydney shortly after the early days of the boom with her husband the late Samuel Planeta, she was well known throughout the Pier district and was prominent in the life of the Polish colony. To a host of friends, neighbors, and acquaintances her demise is occasioning widespread and profound regret. Her husband predeceased her about five years ago having been fatally injured in an accident at the steel plant.
