Here is a thought for you..... Years ago while in C.B. I phoned a man (he was 83 yrs.) I had often heard about but no one seemed to know how he was connected to my family. His wife answered the phone (luckily), when I told her why I was calling she knew he would have been very interested but unfortunately, he now suffered from a bit of "dementia". She said he did have good days though and maybe he might be able to converse with me that day, (she just wanted to make sure I understood the situation). His memory just wasn't up to it so I didn't learn anything other than a valuable lesson for future research .... don't hesitate to phone and no matter how you are received (they may be having a bad day), be prepared to "think outside the box". The person you are calling may be old, living alone and very lonely and your cheerful conversation may be the only voice they heard all day! Dear List, There are many of us with possible railroad employees in our background. I have been advised of two websites that might be worth checking: http://www.novascotiarailwayheritage.com/index.htm http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/black-porters/index-e.html?PHPSESSID=7ard46e7imq1ng1o5cjpg7h6g2 The second one does not refer only to black porters, despite its description. I'm starting to go over my MacDonald research again - While in CB last year, I found at the Beaton, a genealogy inquiry made by the grandson of Alexander MacDonald. Alexander was the brother of my great grandfather. The person making the inquiry lives only two towns over from myself! I don't believe the families ever knew of each other being so close! So, I looked him up and last year sent a letter along with a copy of his inquiry. I never heard back. he, if living is 86 yrs old now. I am contemplating calling his home - maybe he never read my letter, or put it aside and forgot about it, or isn't well, or... isn't interested. Would you call him by phone or leave it alone? Thanks, Lauren
Cape Breton Deaths October 22, 2008 Wednesday Elizabeth Frances MacDonald 94, Florence - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Libby (MacKinnon) MacDonald, age 94, on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008. Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Ella Mae (Edwards) and John Laughlin MacKinnon. She grew up in Alder Point and was very proud to be one of 19 children. She received her Nova Scotia teacher's licence in 1931 and taught school in Bras d'Or, where she was affectionately titled 'the little professor.' In 1937, her adventurous spirit led her to the LeMay Beauty Academy in Boston and the following year she opened her own hairdressing business. Married life began the same year and lasted more than 68 years. She was known by many for her warmth, grace and humour, but we knew Mom best for her wisdom, faith and love. She had a true gift of hospitality and loved nothing more than to entertain family and friends with one of her special meals followed by a lively game of cribbage. Her spirit of fun was always evident while watching a good game of baseball or hockey. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family. She was a deeply spiritual person and a devoted member of St. Stephen's parish, Florence, where she taught catechism and was a reader for many years. Her faith guided her life and prayer was her constant companion. Rosemary, I have been searching for years for Charles Neil Mcdonald in Cape Brenton Nova Scotia. Maybe some of our information over laps. I have photos. naturalization, and a death certificate for Charles Neil Mcdonald. I have a good time line on Charles but when I get to Canada the trail runs cold no pun intended. I am in the US Military stationed in Okinawa, Japan so it is difficult for me to run to Nova Scotia and conduct genealogy research. I hope that Rosemary, or the news letter have heard about this famous Canadian. Scott Marbut Descendant Tree Chart GENERATION NUMBER 1 1. Created by Scott and Cathy Marbut 23 Dec 2007 questions/corrections/additions? e-mail scott@marbut.com Page 2 Descendant Tree Chart In 1882, after living for a short time in Boston, Mass, Mr. McDonald moved to the Dakotas, where he was employed as Bridge Carpenter and Bridge Foreman by the Saint Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway Company (now part of Great Northern Railway Company). In 1884, Mr. McDonald moved to the Far West and located at Celilo, OR., where he entered the employ of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company as Bridge Foreman on the construction of stone, concrete, iron, and timber bridges. In 1890, he was appointed Superintendent of Construction for Robert Wakefield and Company, Contractors, of Portland, Oregon, and for eighteen years he continued in active charge of all the numberous large construction projects undertaken by that firm. During this period, Mr. McDonald's work covered a wide scope and included docks and hrbor improvements at various points along the Pacific Coast, numberous bridges for the Union Pacific System, all the bridges on the Astoria and Columbia River Railway, and several large structures for the City of Portland. He was also retained from time to time to represent the Cheif Engineer of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company in the execution of difficult bridge fondations and in the solution of various erection problems. In 1908, his activities carried him to the Far North. He associated himself with the Copper River and Northwestern Railway Company which was being extended into the interior of Alaska, and was placed in charge of all the bridge construction on that line. This work, which included the famous Miles Glacier Bridge and the Kuskolina Cantilever, was crowned with notible success in the face of the most adverse circumstances. Operations were on far from base of supplies; the season of the year in which climatic conditions were favorable for constructionwas limited to only a few months; and the work had to go on during the long stormy winters of the Copper River country and in tempuratures alomost unbelievably low. Large masses of ice are discharged from the Miles and Child's Glaciers into the Copper River during the summer months, and for that reason the Miles Glacier Bridge which crosses that stream was origially designed for cantilever erection. To advance the opening of the railroad a full year, however, the plan was changed, and it was decided to carry on a substructure work during the winters and at the same time, to erect the spans of the falsework supported on ice. The plan was a success. The ice moved out in an unusually early spring thaw just twenty minutes after the bridge was self-supporting. This dramatic incident is well described in Rex Breach's Novel, "The Iron Trail." In 1912, Mr McDonald returned to Portland and again associated himself with the Robert Wakefield Company. For several years he was the active head of that firm in charge of the execution of important river and harbor work and large building projects, involving the expenditure of millions of dollars. Included in this work was the erection of Harriman Bridge (double-deck railroad and highway lift) across the Willamette River, at Portland, and the Interstate Bridge across the Columbia River, at Vancouver, WA. In 1920, he became Vice-President of the Gilpin Construction Company of Portland, and, from that time until his death, he directed its more important operations, among which were bridges across the Columbia, Willamette, and other large rivers of the Pacific Northwest. Mr. McDonald possessed to a rare degree the good judgement that is acquired only in the stern school of experiance, but he combined with it a technical knowledge and designing ability worthy of a man of great formal training. His counsel was sought by many, especially by younger men, whom he seemed to understand. His life was marked by a succession of great achievements, bold and daring conception, taxing amazing resources of skill and energy in execution, yet uniformly successful in realization. Deeply religious, and of a modest and retiring disposition, generous, honorable, and upright in all things, he was an inspriation to those who came in contact with him. No man was loved more by his associates. His passing has left an empty place which they can never quite be filled. In 1890, he was married to Mrs. Carrie Harrison, who survies him, together with two daughters, Mrs. Joan Atwater, of Eugene, OR. and Mrs. Jessie Acklen, of Raymond, WA. He was a member of various Masonic bodies and other fraternal orders, and was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. McDonald was elected a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers on January 17, Created by Scott and Cathy Marbut 23 Dec 2007 questions/corrections/additions? e-mail scott@marbut.com Page 3 Descendant Tree Chart 1927. Attwater Publishers Hall Santa Monica CA Fred and Ella Bills By Eloise Bills Wagner In the year 1895 Fred Bills arrived in Rosebud, Montana, at the age of seven years. He lived 68 years in Rosebud. Fred was born to Charles and Mary Bills in 1888 in Lodi, California. He had a sister, Rosa and brother named George. Charles Bills died following a team and wagon accident while hauling supplies as a teamster in Lodi, when was only three years old. Mary Jones Bills after three years journeyed to Rosebud with her family. On their arrival she married J. H. Lazenby, a stepbrother of he former husband, and they with the children, went at once to the Diamond ranch where Joe was acting as foreman. This journey turned out happier than in the early 1850's when Mary's folks and Charles's father and mother and family traversed the Old Oregon trail in a wagon train from Illinois and Missouri, on their way to California during the gold rush. The Bills family got separated after a skirmish with hostile Indians attacking their wagon train. Fred's Grandmother Bills was among the dead women at the end of the battle. Somehow the others got to Utah and Mormon families took care of some of the children while the bereaved father went on to be one of the first settlers of Lodi, California. Later other members of the family joined him. The first home of the Lazenby's in Montana was on the Rosebud Creek where they bought land from James Gallagher and Fred attended school at Pleasant Hill school house. Several years later they sold out to Freeman Philbrick. The Lazenby's moved to Rosebud where they jointly ran the old Cottage Created by Scott and Cathy Marbut 23 Dec 2007 questions/corrections/additions? e-mail scott@marbut.com Page 9 Descendant Tree Chart Hotel for two years, then they bought the land and Riverside Hotel where they kept an open house. Joe took care of the livery barn and Mary ran the hotel. She was affectionately known to her patrons as "Mother". Keeping her guests happy included her grandson, Maynard who climbed the fence and ran away from home to sample her good cooking at the age of two years. A new piano and correspondence course was provided by the Lazenby's for anyone who chose to try it. The Cheyenne Chief Two Moon and his wives were frequent guests, where he and Mary had many good visits. Two Moon gave her a splendid Indian blanket of which she was very proud to own. During World War I the Spanish Influenza hit the guests at the hotel and it seemed more like a hospital. Mary took care of everyone, but she lost her own life from exhaustion and pneumonia in 1918 in October. She was laid to rest in the Forsyth cemetery. Joe Lazenby was injured when a train hit his car at Rosebud stockyards crossing. The train took him to Forsyth on a stretcher for treatment. He lived several years after the incident in Forsyth, passing away in 1938. George Bills lived and worked in the Rosebud and Forsyth area till 1913 when he moved to Seattle and married Gen McGrath. In his younger days he squired the town's beauties to dances far and wide. He was a life member of the BPO Elks Lodge. When he and Gen attended a football game someone snatched the treasured Indian blanket from Gen's shoulders and disappeared into the crowd. It was never recovered. George and Gen made many visits to Montana during his sixty years of railroading, as a brakeman on the passenger for the Milwaukee Railroad. He passed away at 86 years of age. The years rolled by and Rosa married Johnny Williams who was working on the Diamond ranch as a cook. They had two sons, George and Walter. Rosa drove Johnny around in their car from the time they first came into existence. Once they encountered a ranger at the entrance to Yellowstone Park who informed them the roads were to perilous for a woman to drive so Johnny got in and drove around the bend and switched places with Rosie and she was the first woman to drive a car through Yellowstone Park. Later they sold their place and bought an orange grove in Pomona, California. Their sons later married and George had two children. Rosa passed away in 1935. Fred Bills broke horses on ranches in his youth. He was on the passenger trains working for Northern Pacific Railroad seven years. Fred married Mary Scheetz whose father was Colonel Scheetz, one of the first land surveyors of Montana Territory. He used the chain method which modern surveyors claim was quite accurate. Fred built a cabin on his homestead on Butte Creek for his wife and son John. Later in Spokane John took the name of his stepfather Amsberry. He was sales representative for Northwest District of Union Carbide Company until he retired. He made many visits to the Bills family while on the road. John and wife Jessie Rae raised two children and now enjoy boating and skiing near Spokane. Ella Hauber Bills was born in Anoka, Minnesota to Mary Alice and William Hauber in 1884. Her mother came from Selbo, Norway as a young girl. Ella's Mother lived to the magnificent age of 101 years. Besides Ella there were two sisters, Winifred Chappelle who has outlived the Hauber family at ninety-four years of age, Addie Jackson and Arthur Hauber their brother. The rest of the family returned to Troupsburg, New York, the fathers birthplace but Art went west to Montana, finding a job at the Twenty ranch. Ella left home and worked in Pennsylvania, Vancouver, B.C. and Calgary, Alberta where she met Zelia Taggart. The two ladies decided to pay Art a visit and Zelia stayed on to marry Art and they had one son, Arthur Jr. They owned the "71" ranch. Later the family returned to New York where Art worked till retirement for Erie Railroad shops. Before he passed away he spoke many times of moving back to Montana. He died in 1952. Fred charmed Ella into making her visit a permanent life with him. She returned to New York only for a few visits spending the rest of her days at Rosebud. Fred and Ella were married July 4th 1914 as Ashland, Montana. They drove to the Ice Well in the Lazenby car for their honeymoon trip. A cool place on a hot July day. To this marriage two children were born, Maynard and Eloise. Fred hauled freight several years for A.C. Stohr from Rosebud, to Lame Deer Trading Post. The trip was slow going at eight miles per hour in the International chain drive truck. He hauled everything from pigs to coffins. The Cheyenne Indians liked Fred and nicknamed him "Black Whiskers". Beaded moccasins and dolls were gifts to the Bills children from the Cheyennes. Created by Scott and Cathy Marbut 23 Dec 2007 questions/corrections/additions? e-mail scott@marbut.com Page 10 Descendant Tree Chart During his lifetime, Fred did many things such as helping George Davidson in the 20's. He served thirty years for Rosebud County as Deputy Sheriff. He worked on road projects and was in the sand and gravel business before becoming a bus driver for Rosebud District #12. He also served as custodian and drove the bus on basketball outings and 4-H Camps at Crazy Head Springs. He was more active than a man half his age. The old "Rosebud Bandstand" was a favorite spot hot summer evenings when Fred played drums with the band. He was a charter member of the Sage Riders and IOOF Lodge. Later he drove the star mail route up Sweeney Creek many years. Fishing on the Yellowstone River was a family sport also putting meat on the table during the depression. After tiring of fishing it was more fun to hunt moss agates and Fred and Ella found it more rewarding because they met lots of rock-hounds and jewelers from around the world. They shipped the rocks sometimes to dealers. Ella was interested in fossilized shells and collected arrowheads and Indian hammers as well as trading agates for finished pieces of jewelry. They had a boardwalk in back of the house to the river bank. On one side was "his" and the other side was "hers" piles of agates. Occasionally the piles grew to about four tons. Their hobby grew till there was someone camping in their yard every summer. Fred and Ella were true pioneers having spent most of their lives in the great outdoors, and helping friends and neighbors. Around 1927 after a hard winter the ice jammed up on the Yellowstone behind the bridge and water backed up along the slough road, flooding Al Hansen's place doing a lot of damage. The whole town was evacuated to the nearby hills until morning because of the threatened flood which didn't happen. Many fires plagued the little town but the most memorable one was when the main business district burned to the ground. The flames were so high and sparks flew all over town. Maynard fell off the Bills roof while pouring water on to wet the shingles down. The fire burned all night and the N. P. water tank from Forsyth came to the finish the spreading fire. This was around 1931. The loss of the business district along with elevator fires later the Harstad lumber yard fire seemed to cause a lot of people to move away. The Bills home was always a center for home entertainment. The Lazenby piano was used by both Maynard and Eloise. Maynard later played piano for many dances, Ella sang and friends joined in and Fred played the drums, which all proves on e doesn't have to be rich to enjoy life. The old piano is still being used by the Lazenby's great grand daughter Joan DeCock. Maynard graduated from Rosebud High School. He worked various jobs until he married Isabel Moerkerke in 1942. She was teaching school at Cartersville. They moved to Colstrip where Maynard worked for Foley Bros. The Mine closed down when the steam engines went out and the diesel came in. He later worked at Koester Chevrolet driving to Forsyth every day. Isabel continued teaching until she retired after twenty years. They raised four children, Maynard Jr., Mary Lou, Georgia and Richard. The Bills family participated in community activities and Maynard returned to mine work again until he started a new venture working in Hysham manging sales for the Chevrolet Agency. He always enjoyed re-building old cars as a hobby. Maynard Jr. married Sandra Janene, after graduating from Eastern Montana College. He teaches school at Fairview and has two children, Paul and Anne. Mary Lou married Mike Richards and they own a TV business in Missoula. They have two children Merry Jo and Mike. Georgia attended Miles City Business College and was married. She lives in Miles City with her son Robbie. Richard Bills married Danae Matz and lives in Forsyth and works in Colstrip. Eloise left the Bills home in 1934. She lived with her cousin and wife in Claremont, California. She continued making music her career after graduation from high school there. During World War II she married and had a daughter Joan, born in Ontario, California. The family lived four years at Balboa and Newport Beach. During the black-outs there were many anxious moments. Growing tired of city living, Eloise and Joan returned to Montana after fifteen years absence. In 1950 Eloise married Dick Wagner in Forsyth. At the time Dick was operating the Ben Franklin Store. They raised a son Louis David and as Joan and Louis grew up they attended Forsyth schools and took and active part in the community affairs. Both graduated from Forsyth High School. Dick was active in Montana Wildlife Federation work and raising fancy show pigeons and water fowl for his hobby. Eloise continued to working enlarged her hobby of playing organ for twenty years of services at the Lutheran Created by Scott and Cathy Marbut 23 Dec 2007 questions/corrections/additions? e-mail scott@marbut.com Page 11 Descendant Tree Chart Church in Forsyth, having started at age twelve playing for the Episcopal Church in Rosebud many years ago. Joan graduated from Eastern Montana College and married Dick DeCock. They have three children, Mark, Dennis, and Michele, all growing up on the 4L ranch on Armells Creek near Forsyth. Louis graduated from Montana State University and received further education there. He is working and living in Bellingham, Washington. The Wagners sold their store and buildings in 1976 and are enjoying their many friendships made during those thirty years in what is now the "Trading Post". Even though they enjoy desert living Montana will always be their home. The Bills family had their first separation in August, 1963. The family and community suffered along with Fred when he was accidentally burned. He was improving and ready for skin grafting in Miles City Hospital when he suddenly had a fatal heart attack. The whole community mourned his passing. Ella carried on alone at home keeping busy with her rocks and friends. After three years missing her mate, she became ill and that was another shock to the community when she passed away at the Forsyth Hospital in July, 1966. They would have been married forty-nine years and were always together. They are both laid to rest in the Forsyth cemetery. The silence of the old Bills home must hold many memories of the days when the walls rocked with laughter and music. Even though Fred and Ella may have gone over that last hill hunting agates, their memory lingers on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them. 20. Cape Breton Deaths October 20, 2008 Monday Grant H. Crabtree Margaree/Sydney, N.S. - Reluctantly, in his 96th year, smothered with love and enjoying it to the last possible second, our dearest Grant departed Tuesday evening, Oct.14, as the clouds flew past that perfect full moon, within view, and while a cu mor glas wandered beneath his windows. Ti amo per sempre. One of Canada's pioneer filmmakers, director and cinematographer. A mighty heart with a personality to match, he survived over four months in ICU, in a heroic struggle to overcome multiple hospital infections. He just didn't have time to be the good patient, too many things beckoned: eagles and hummingbirds, chanterelles, his asparagus and crabapple jelly, lunch at the Cedar House, entertaining His Girls. Grant grew up in Rockliffe, Ottawa, in a boisterous, creative family with both parents being artists, from a long line of artists. His mother, Ella Greenham studied at the Royal Academy with John Singer Sargent; her father was Queen Victoria's Chief of Security. Her family had three lines of descent from Edward I through the Howards, Dukes of Norfolk. In the Austro-Hungarian Empire they ran the port of Trieste, partied with the Bonapartes and had portraits painted. His father was art director at Notman's in Montreal and then ran his own engraving business in Ottawa. Grant's first film job was an offer from John Grierson of the NFB in 1939. His career spanned six decades and his films won many awards. He filmed in Quebec with Palardy and Barbeau and A.Y. Jackson; in Emily Carr country for Klee Wyck; on the Columbian icefield, in Resolute and Pond Inlet; in logging camps and national parks; with wheat scientists and marine biologists, Ukrainian farmers and new immigrants, the Saguenay, the South Saskatchewan; with Helen Creighton for Songs of Nova Scotia and on the last of the Grand Banks schooners. He made the classic "Loon's Necklace "and "Morning on the Lievre" and films for children and about children; Scandinavia, Britain, U.S.A. He went everywhere where there was a story to be told about the promise of a youthful Canada. His life was lived in the outdoors: a championship rower at the Edinburgh Canoe Club, hockey, building backyard rinks and log cabins and ski runs in the Gatineau; evenings of screening rushes and broomball and hilarity at Meech Lake; making maple syrup every spring until he was 94; countless canoe trips, hikes, picnics and stopping in for tea. He could identify every tree, wildflower and mushroom. But the love of his life was Cape Breton, begun in 1942, never diminished, especially for the Margaree and its people. He taught himself woodworking and learned to make ladderback chairs with his beloved Ernest Hart at the Northeast. He adored his neighbours, Albert Polycarp fiddling at sunset, Levi the superb artist in wood, John Joe the master sheep shearer and storyteller. He was always along the river and shore with camera, searching for the perfect light. Grant had a superb 'eye' and his passion was nature photography. He made many films here and never wanted to be very far from his home high above the River at East Margaree. In old age, when he couldn't fish and climb his hill and go to the beach, he looked after his roses, made marmalade and maple liqueur and pursued his Red Green projects, enchanting and inspiring his grandchildren with stories and full of humour. He has left a wonderful library of photos and donations to the National Archives. His last film, Song of Seasons (1977) is a love song to an innis aigh, his own piece of heaven. He was married for 50 years to his beautiful wife, Marjorie Morse (2000) of Toronto. He is survived by daughters, Lauren (Kenzie) MacNeil, Ankerville Street, Sydney (his other home), and by Carla Kalberlah, Halifax; grandchildren, Caitriana, Christie, Mary, Anna MacNeil and Kyle, Vanessa, Andrea and Ryan Tingley; great-grandchildren, Marcos Alej, Nicholas and Alexandra. The family will be at home at 839 East Margaree Rd., Saturday, Nov. 1, 12-6. All welcome. Donations appreciated to the Margaree Salmon Association: margareesalmon.ca. On Wednesday, Oct.15, 2008, Merrill lost his courageous battle with prostate cancer. Merrill worked outdoors most of his adult life, but it was the Sydney Steel plant he left in 1967 when he moved to Toronto with his wife and baby son to find a better life for his family. He attended the Devry technical institute for two years to obtain his technical certification before taking a job as a line worker for Bell Canada. Merrill loved this job, and remained a line worker until his retirement from Maritime Telegraph and Telephone in 1999. In 1974 Nova Scotia called him home and he returned to Dartmouth with his wife and two children, a daughter having joined his family during his time 'down the road'. Merrill always loved the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. Golf was a fond pastime also, especially with his friends and men from the company who were all always ready to have a laugh at each other's expense. Music was a passion for Merrill his entire life, and during his later years he discovered the joy of performing and playing guitar and singing. This brought a number of new and great friends into Merrill's life. Merrill looked forward every year to the summer months when he would spend time on the Mira where he had his cabin looking over the river. Merrill was a friend of Bill for the past 28 years. His friends and family will attest to his sense of humour, specifically his sense of mischief in the presence of authority. If friends and family would talk, many others would well shake their heads in amazement. His sense of fun aside, Merrill always, always put his family, friends (several of whom were family to him), and even strangers before himself. He was an active participant in the special needs support groups, spending his weekends at the bowling alley with the people who enjoyed this so much. Merrill is survived by Viola Huntington (Olie MacKinnon), his beloved wife and partner in life of 45 years; his daughter, Laurel Ann; his son, Clifford and wife Julie; his two granddaughters, Tahlia and Riley; and his best friend Earl Hodgson and wife Jane. Merrill is also survived by brothers and sisters, Lorna Stuckless, Lowell and wife Helen, Lyndon and partner Catherine; sister in-law, Sharon; and too many nieces and nephews to count here. Merrill was predeceased by his brother, Terrence. Merrill will be missed terribly by all of us, but we will always be thankful for the time he shared with us. His family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the kind people who gave such good care to Merrill during his illness. To the staff and the Palliative care unit in 7a at the VG hospital, the people at the Red Cross, the people at the VON, and his personal physician and oncologist. Thank you so much for your compassion and your efforts to give Merrill's last days as much dignity and comfort as was humanly possible. Merrill's children wish to also say thank you to the family and friends who provided so much support for Merrill and Viola during this terribly difficult time. We invite you to join us in celebrating Merrill's life on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Centennial Branch Legion Branch 160, 703 Main St., Dartmouth from 2-6 p.m. We would ask that Merrill's musical friends please bring their instruments and singing voices. No flowers by the family's request. If you so wish please consider either donations Support Services Group (SSG), 10 Dundas St., Dartmouth, 466 0230, or your local food bank. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Marjorie 'Elaine' (Cook) Burke Burlington, Ont. - Passed away after a lengthy illness at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Burlington, Ont. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008.
