There is a Prince Edward Island connection to this story. D. L. MacKinnon of Montague manufactured caskets and a mortician in Sydney was his Cape Breton agent. D.L. happened to be in Sydney when Bell died. Bell was buried in a rough casket made from lumber from his own property. It was lined with material (some sort of silk???) having to do with aviation. Then the casket was placed in a (bronze?) vault that was sold by the Montague Furnishing Company and came out of the warehouse in Sydney. The purpose of the vault was for the potential of the movement of the remains at a later date to a cemetery in the United States. There are pictures Nigel and if you wish to contact me off list at whleard@ekpei.ca, I can lead you to someone who can give you the whole story. I believe the name of the funeral director is in that material. Take good care . . .
Hi Nigel....I just happened to have it! as follows......but it doesn't mention his actual burial or the mortician.... Marsha MacKay Obituary - August 3, 1922 Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, Inventor of Telephone, Dies Sudden End, Due to Anemia, Comes in Seventy-Sixth Year at His Nova Scotia Home, Notables Pay Him Tribute, Lived to See Speech Reproduced Across the World--Pioneered in Aeronautics By THE NEW YORK TIMES The Associated Press Alexander Graham Bell, 1908 SYDNEY, N. S., Aug. 2.--Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, died at 2 o'clock this morning at Beinn Breagh, his estate near Baddeck. Although the inventor, who was in his seventy-sixth year, had been in failing health for several months, he had not been confined to bed, and the end was unexpected. Late yesterday afternoon, however, his condition, brought about by progressive anemia, became serious, and Dr. Ker of Washington, a cousin of Mrs. Bell, a house guest and a Sydney physician, attended him. With Mr. Bell when he died were Mrs. Bell, a daughter, Mrs. Marion Hubbard Fairchild, and her husband, David G. Fairchild of Washington. The inventor leaves another daughter, Mrs. Elise M. Grosvenor, wife of Gilbert Grosvenor of Washington, who now is with her husband in Brazil. At Sunset on Friday, on the crest of Beinn Breach Mountain, the body of Dr. Bell will be buried at a spot chosen by the inventor himself. The grave of the venerable scientist, the immensity of whose life work was attested by scores of Telegrams which came today to the Bell estate from the world's prominent figures, is at a point overlooking the town of Baddeck, Cape Breton. The sweeping vista from the mountain top, so admired by Dr. Bell, stretches far over the Bras d'Or Lakes. Sunset, chosen as the moment when the body will be committed to the sturdy hills, gilds the waters of the lakes until they are really what their name means--"the lakes of the arm of gold." Dr. Bell asked to be buried in the countryside where he had spent the major portion of the last thirty-five years of his life. The inventor came to Cape Breton forty years ago, and five years later purchased the Beinn Breagh estate. His last experiments, dealing with flying boats, were made on Bras d'Or Lake. American specialists who were rushing to the bedside of Dr. Bell were today returning to the United States. They were told of his death while aboard fast trains bound for Baddeck, and, being too late, turned back. Alexander Graham Bell lived to see the telephonic instrument over which he talked a distance of twenty feet in 1876 used, with improvements, for the transmission of speech across the continent, and more than that, for the transmission of speech across the Atlantic and from Washington to Honolulu without wires. The little instrument he patented less than fifty years ago, scorned then as a joke, was when he died the basis for 13,000,000 telephone is used in every civilized country in the world. The Bell basic patent, the famed No. 174,465, which he received on his twenty-ninth birthday and which was sustained in a historic court fight, has been called the most valuable patent ever issued. Although the inventor of many contrivances which he regarded with as much tenderness and to which he attached as much importance as the telephone, a business world which he confessed he was often unable to understand made it assured that he would go down in history as the man who made the telephone. He was an inventor of the gramophone, and for nearly twenty years was engaged in aeronautics. Associated with Glenn H. Curtiss and others, whose names are now known wherever airplanes fly, he pinned his faith in the efficacy for aviation of the tetrahedral cell, which never achieved the success he saw for it in aviation, but as a by-product of his study he established an important new principle in architecture. Up to the time of his death Dr. Bell took the deepest interest in aviation. Upon his return from a tour of the European countries in 1909 he reported that the continental nations were far ahead of America in aviation and urged that steps by taken to keep apace of them. He predicted in 1916 that the great war would be won in the air. It was always a theory of his that flying machines could make ever so much more speed at great heights, in rarefied atmosphere, and he often said that the transatlantic flight would be some time made in one day, a prediction which he lived to see fulfilled.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my Black Porters query. I think you're right. When I look at the image again it probably is $20 and the 2nd figure is the annual amount. Because the 2nd amount is located across from 'Deceased' I thought it might have been a death benefit but it's likely the yearly total. Rod MacPhee.

Wondering if someone has access to the Cape Breton newspapers for the summer of 1922 when Alexander Graham Bell died? My interest is that my wife's grandfather Frederick Lundrine Corey, who was employed by Lowden's (sp?) Funeral Home, was in charge of Bell's burial i.e. blasting of the rock and interment, etc. I would be interested in seeing the obit and whether the Funeral Home is mentioned. All the best, Nigel P. Service
Does anyone have any information that would connect to this Lew MacVicar? I'm wondering if he fits into my MacVicar family anywhere. The Vancouver Sun - October 23, 2008 Elsie Vera MacVicar: Elsie and Lew enjoyed a happy marriage for 65 years until Lew died in 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Heather, son-in-law Tom, grandchildren Michael (Kristi) and Sean (Gail), sisters Norma (Bob) and Phyllis, sister-in-law Kay, great-grandchildren Lachlan, Severen, Finnegan and Oliver and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Amelia and Carl and husband lew, Elsie grieved the loss of two sisters, Mabel and Jeannie and three brothers, Lou, John and George. Elsie was born in New Zealand and grew up in a family of eight children whose parents moved to different parts of the world until settling in Victoria and then Vancouver. She started working early to help support the family, receiving limited formal schooling but acquiring a fine education in life. Elsie was very close to her family and thrived on extensive gatherings of family and friends. She and Lew enjoyed travelling on vacations around the world and lived for two years in Australia when Heather was young. She loved being a part of her grandchildren's activities and was with them as often as she could be. She had a charming way of coming up with words and phrases that weren't quite right but made sense nevertheless. Elsie will be greatly missed. Many thanks to the staff of Kiwanis Care Centre in North Vancouver for the loving care they bestowed on Elsie. There will be a private gathering of friends and family to celebrate Elsie's life.

Born and raised in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Rebecca (Cantwell) Handley. She had a tremendous faith and was a life long parishioner of Immaculate Conception parish in Sydney Mines, as well as a faithful member of the CWL. Marguerite loved life and enjoyed every day of life that God gave her. In 1942, always the adventurer, she took a train ride with her lifelong friend, Regis MacQueen and went to work in a war plant in Ajax, Ont. After 18 years of adventure in Ontario, she returned 'home to Bogrow' to care for her parents. It was following this that she embarked on another new life as wife, mother and as always, aunt. She cherished all of her many nieces and nephews, and always enjoyed news of their lives. She and Stanley felt their lives were made complete with the birth of their two special grandsons. They made a brave move to leave Sydney Mines and moved to Hammonds Plains in 2005 to be closer to 'the boys'. Marguerite is survived by her husband, Stanley MacNeil; daughter, Becky (Dennis) Hamlin; grandsons, Mark and Matthew, all of Hammonds Plains. She is also survived by sisters, Mrs. Mary Barry, Sydney Mines, and Mrs. Theresa Hewitt, Peterborough, Ont.; and many treasured nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Hennessey, Mrs. Annie Mae Steele and brothers, Alexander, William and James Handley. Visitation for Marguerite MacNeil will be held in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 2-4 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate her life will take place Monday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Hughie MacNeil officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. Donations in Marguerite's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or to a charity of one's choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Merrill MacKenzie Huntington 1937-2008 - Born in Cape Breton to the late Fred Huntington and Barbara (MacKenzie) Huntington. On Wednesday, Oct.15, 2008, Merrill lost his courageous battle with prostate cancer. Merrill worked outdoors most of his adult life, but it was the Sydney Steel plant he left in 1967 when he moved to Toronto with his wife and baby son to find a better life for his family. He attended the Devry technical institute for two years to obtain his technical certification before taking a job as a line worker for Bell Canada. Merrill loved this job, and remained a line worker until his retirement from Maritime Telegraph and Telephone in 1999. In 1974 Nova Scotia called him home and he returned to Dartmouth with his wife and two children, a daughter having joined his family during his time 'down the road'. Merrill always loved the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. Golf was a fond pastime also, especially with his friends and men from the company who were all always ready to have a laugh at each other's expense. Music was a passion for Merrill his entire life, and during his later years he discovered the joy of performing and playing guitar and singing. This brought a number of new and great friends into Merrill's life. Merrill looked forward every year to the summer months when he would spend time on the Mira where he had his cabin looking over the river. Merrill was a friend of Bill for the past 28 years. His friends and family will attest to his sense of humour, specifically his sense of mischief in the presence of authority. If friends and family would talk, many others would well shake their heads in amazement. His sense of fun aside, Merrill always, always put his family, friends (several of whom were family to him), and even strangers before himself. He was an active participant in the special needs support groups, spending his weekends at the bowling alley with the people who enjoyed this so much. Merrill is survived by Viola Huntington (Olie MacKinnon), his beloved wife and partner in life of 45 years; his daughter, Laurel Ann; his son, Clifford and wife Julie; his two granddaughters, Tahlia and Riley; and his best friend Earl Hodgson and wife Jane. Merrill is also survived by brothers and sisters, Lorna Stuckless, Lowell and wife Helen, Lyndon and partner Catherine; sister in-law, Sharon; and too many nieces and nephews to count here. Merrill was predeceased by his brother, Terrence. Merrill will be missed terribly by all of us, but we will always be thankful for the time he shared with us. His family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the kind people who gave such good care to Merrill during his illness. To the staff and the Palliative care unit in 7a at the VG hospital, the people at the Red Cross, the people at the VON, and his personal physician and oncologist. Thank you so much for your compassion and your efforts to give Merrill's last days as much dignity and comfort as was humanly possible. Merrill's children wish to also say thank you to the family and friends who provided so much support for Merrill and Viola during this terribly difficult time. We invite you to join us in celebrating Merrill's life on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Centennial Branch Legion Branch 160, 703 Main St., Dartmouth from 2-6 p.m. We would ask that Merrill's musical friends please bring their instruments and singing voices. No flowers by the family's request. If you so wish please consider either donations Support Services Group (SSG), 10 Dundas St., Dartmouth, 466 0230, or your local food bank. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mary Carmella 'Mella' Sharpe Tower Road, Glace Bay - Mary Carmella Sharpe of Tower Road, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Thanks very much for this very useful reference. I found my great-uncle's railroad employment record on the collectionscanada.gc.ca site, which is very nice to have. He lived and worked in North Sydney from 1912 onwards, and died about 1955. That record is one more interesting footnote to the family tree. Is the Canadian census as found on ancestry.com different from the census found on cbgha site and others? sure seems so
Ok, so the way I got into this thing today with contacting the grandson of Alexander MacDonald - my copy of his genealogy research has a researcher listing an Alexander marrying Margaret McQuarrie. Alexander was son of Duncan MacDonald and Anne MacLellan. Sounded pretty definitive to me so I ran with it - However, i have also made note of an Alexander MacDonald on deed records for southern half of lot 34 Boularderie - he is listed with Ann, and mary MacDonald, margaret Mcleod and Isabella Mcleod in 1887 at which time they sold their interest in Lot 34 to Roderick MacDonald and Donald MacDonald. I believe perhaps, Duncan MacDonald ghad passed away and left the land to family and they sold to these two brothers - leading me to think there is in fact a brother Alexander MacDonald - however, the one mentioned above would have already been in US by this time. Furthermore... I have also come across a posting titled Descendants of Alexander MacDonald (on cbgha website - email contact is no longer valid) - this Alexander was bron 15 March 1830 in Boularderie and married rachel Ferguson. One of there children, Roderick was bron at Man O War Point, Boularderie. My Duncan and Ann borrowed money in 1868 from Ronald and Margaret Ferguson in order to purchase southern half lot 34 from Roderick MacDonald of Sydney. I'm thinking their may be a connection with my MacDonalds and the Fergusons, but can't put it together. Oh, I keep wishing they tried out some new names back then!!!! I'm afraid by the time I get back to all this I'll forget where I was! Anyone have any insight? Thanks, lauren
Hi George; I recently found my great-grandfather, Michael MacPhee, in the Black Porters index. His allowance from the Provident Fund looks like either $320 or $220 and the death benefit $240. Are you (or anyone else on the list) familiar enough with this fund to say whether these amounts sound normal. They're a little hard to read. Here's the link if anyone wants to have a look. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/black-porters/001051-119.02-e.php?id=21141&page_sequence_nbr=1&interval=20&PHPSESSID=84p0bqlqrucblu79ocmud7olu4 My second question is: would the first amount be an annual pension or just a one time separation allowance?
