The CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION is pleased to announce that CBGHA member, Wayne Macvicar, will be the speaker at our next meeting, 5 Nov 2008, 7:00 PM at the Lyceum, George St, Sydney, NS. Mr Macvicar is the author of the Obituaries From The Sydney Post-Record, 1933 -1956, in four volumes. These books are a great resource for anyone doing Cape Breton family research. Mr Macvicar's new book "Vital Statistics From Cape Breton Newspapers 1901-1912" provides access to records from a time period that is often difficult to research. We applaud Mr. Macvicar's research and look forward to the next two volumes to follow at a later date. A first release on the new publication from Wayne Macvicar is as follows - The first volume in a new 3 volume series of "Vital Statistics from Cape Breton Newspapers" has been published. Volume 1 covers the period 1901-1912. Subsequent volumes to be published will cover 1913-1922 and 1923-1932. These publications will fill the gap between a series of publications covering the nineteenth century by Mildred Howard and my series of Obituaries from the Sydney Post-Record covering the years 1933-1956. The three volumes in the series include extracts of obituaries/deaths, marriages and births found in the various surviving newspapers that were published on Cape Breton Island during that time period. The publications include Sydney Daily Post, Sydney Record, Glace Bay Gazette, North Sydney Herald, Richmond County Record, Bras d'Or Gazette, Sydney Mines Star, Inverness News, Hawkesbury Bulletin and others. Due to the number of entries it has been divided into three volumes. Each death entry includes the following information: surname, given names, date of death, place of death, date and place of burial (when known), limited biographical information to assist in identification of the individual, and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared. A maiden name cross-reference was also prepared and incorporated into the main body of the index to assist the researcher in finding married female lines. Each marriage entry includes bride's name, groom's name, date and place of marriage, parents' names (if given), officiating minister (if given), some brief biographical information and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared as well as separate bride and groom surname indexes. Each birth entry includes family name, date of birth (if given), parents' names, sex (child's name was not usually provided) and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared. Volume 1, 1901-1912, is 423 pages and contains over 5500 deaths, 2700 marriages and 1000 births. Volume 1 sells for $30.00, or $40.00 (CDN or US) by mail, postage included. Please note: A cheque or money order is required in advance prior to shipping. Copies may be obtained by contacting me at the following address: Wayne Macvicar 5871 Hornes Road Mira Gut, NS Canada B1K 2Y5 e-mail: wamacvicar@seaside.ns.ca In light of the high quality of research in Mr. Macvicar's previous books, this new offering is sure to be a great help to Cape Breton researchers Visitors are always welcome. I found the following questions from Lauren intriguing. Is there an 1851 census for Boularderie (or anywhere?). I found 1838-41 and then, 61-91. Also, for the 1871 census for example, it lists dwelling number and family number, Is there anyway to tell where on the island this dwelling is? It is broken into district E1 and E2 also. Since there were no on-line replies, I assume she was replied to directly but still the topic has merit. Here are some thoughts... Censuses are interesting things. The 1841 Cape Breton census seems to have two parts - the census and a census of squatters. The latter has a map associated with it (at the Highland Village). Only bits and pieces of the 1851 census survive. Each of the later censuses had a number of schedules attached, these schedules included information on location, land, crops, livestock and/or income, buildings, etc. The completeness of these schedules varies. For example, the 1911 census in the Vancouver area: for the district identified as Vancouver it gives Street name and address (and sometimes apartment number) but in the district identified as South Vancouver all that is reported is family number and 'South Vancouver' although sometimes a street is named.... On the original films of early British censuses each sub-district is prefaced with a description, including which roads were included... Many on-line transcriptions are incomplete - the easiest found free 1881 Inverness County census (from that site in california) is missing the entire Margaree, Whale Cove area. Another from the same site has much duplication... I guess the point is that if you think you have found someone in a transcription but need more information only the original documents may contain it. Also, some sites like ancestry, only have some of the schedules available - get them from the archives....
I think it just illustrates that not everyone gets as excited about finding distant cousins as we all do. Regards Michael lauren macdonald <swayball20@yahoo.com> wrote: at least for now... I mailed out a little packet of info to my possible distant MacDonald cousin - gave my contact info in case he changed his mind about getting together and asked that he acknowledge receipt of the package. he did so and promptly - I just mailed it I think on Friday. Today, I received my same envelope back, recycled and addressed to me, taped closed (so it was at least opened) with all the contents I had enclosed - no note from him. I did meanwhile, find his mother's obituary which did list grandchildren. I was thinking of trying to find them, but I have to get over this blow first. All I can do now is watch the paper for obits and hope their is a yard /estate sale with some genealogy info at it! Thanks for all your advice! Macvicar's previous books, this new offering is sure to be a great help to Cape Breton researchers Norm Macdonald CBGHA President

Hi Nigel: If you check NS Vital Statistics they have a Frederick L Corey, Undertaker born in New Brunswick. Donna in Ontario
at least for now... Lauren
A lot of thanks to a lot of people who have responded to my query on Bell's obit. So far the actual obituary written in Sydney that may have appeared in a Cape Breton paper has not surfaced but I am sure it will. To any older Sydney types, (I drive a bus for those over 90 and they're not old----just ask them), my wife's family name was Trivett first living at 99 Park St., then Castle Dr.. It was Barb's grandfather (Fred. Corey) who I am asking about. -- All the best, Nigel P. Service
