The funeral was the most largely attended in Sydney in many years and upwards of a thousand men, friends an fellow employees of the deceased in the Dominion Coal company, followed the corse to the grave. The general office of the Dominion Coal Company was closed for the afternoon and some two hundred employees, together with General Manager MacDougall and a number of his executive staff, attended in a body. A detachment of the thirty-sixth battery, former employees of the Dominion Coal Company, attended in a body, and among the many others who were present were a number from different parts of the province, who had been friends and acquaintances of the deceased. The funeral service at the house was conducted by Rev. P.C. Reid, of Bethany Baptist church, assisted by Rev. I.A. Corbett, of Pitt Street Baptist church, and Rev. J.W. Bartlett, of Jubilee Methodist church. The service was an impressive one. Mr. Reed gave the address and in it he referrd to the splendid and sterling character of the deceased and the esteem in which he was held in the community. The prayer was offered by Rev. I.A. Corbett and the service closed with a solo, "Saved by Grace," by Miss Florrie Reid, which was beautifully and feelingly rendered. The pall bearers were, M.W. McDonald, F.W. Armstrong and Harry Watson of the Coal Company staff; Lyman Jackson of the Sydney & Louisburg Railway; G. Rev. P.C. Reed read the exhortation and commitment. The prayer was said by Rev. J.W. Bartlett. Rev. I.A. Corbett pronounced the benediction. The funeral was one of the greatest public evidence of esteem for a fellow citizen which the people of this city has ever signified and the floral tributes and large attendance was a striking evidence of the deceased's popularity. submitted by es718 <es718@freenet.carleton.ca>

Good morning all, I have recently been given a clock that some have told me hung in Holy Redeemer Church at the Pier in Father Keily's time. It was supposed to be hanging to the left of the pulpit when sitting in the congregation. Would anyone have a picture of the church, perhaps at a wedding, to verify this? Thank you, Rosemary

LOCAL NEWS Cape Breton Post 03/11/08 John Graham MacInnesCommunity mourns the death of longtime councillor LAURA JEAN GRANT The Cape Breton Post RIVER BENNET - John Graham MacInnes is being remembered as the ultimate community man. The longtime Victoria County councillor, former warden and retired school teacher died early Monday from what's believed to be a heart attack. He was 61. A resident of River Bennet, MacInnes was involved in all facets of rural community life, from education and the arts to volunteer work and politics. "John Graham leaves a colossal void in the area. He was so involved in almost everything, particularly the (St. Ann's Bay United) church. The church will miss him terribly. He worked extremely long hours doing things in the community. I don't know when in the world he ever slept," said former MLA Kennie MacAskill of neighbouring Englishtown. "We'll miss him very much." First elected to Victoria County council in 1985, MacInnes served as councillor for 23 straight years going unopposed in his district in every municipal campaign since his inaugural run for the seat. "For somebody in municipal politics that's pretty amazing stuff. That in itself speaks to how he was thought of in his community, in my opinion," said fellow councillor Bruce Morrison of MacInnes' popularity representing the communities of North Shore, North River, Englishtown, South Haven and area. MacInnes was acclaimed once again in District 4 during last month's municipal election. Morrison said MacInnes "saw the big picture" and was very supportive of projects throughout the county. He was also a wealth of information and support throughout their years together on council. "We sat side by side basically for 11 years because our districts were side by side and that's how they seat us. He was certainly very good to me as far as mentoring and guiding for my introduction to municipal politics," he said. "We didn't always agree on our politics or our hockey teams but we certainly developed a very sincere friendship." Morrison described MacInnes as a real gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour. "We had a lot of laughs," he recalled. Sandy Hudson, Victoria County's chief adminstrative officer, said MacInnes - who served one term as warden and a couple of terms as deputy warden - will be missed around the council table. "His experience and his counsel will be sorely missed," said Hudson. "He's quite a community worker, too, down the North Shore and North River and Englishtown and all that area. He was always doing something for somebody." MacInnes was also a respected educator who taught for many years at schools in Baddeck, Sydney Mines and North Shore. He retired from the now-closed North Shore Elementary School about six years ago. "I had the privilege of working with him for his last two years of teaching," said Marilyn MacLeod, former principal at North Shore. "I just have such fond memories. We had a lot of laughs and he couldn't be better to work with, lots of funny jokes and funny stories. "(He was) a man who was very proud of his family and who loved his pets and loved children and loved teaching. He was very kind and just had so many experiences and talents and he wanted to share those with children." MacInnes often performed in local producations and with the St. Ann's Bay Players, and MacLeod said he was always willing to share his passion for theatre with the school. MacLeod, a resident of North Shore, said MacInnes was "involved in everything" in the community and was well respected and loved. MacInnes is survived by his wife, Joan, and two sons, Chris and Ken. ljgrant@cbpost.com 04/11/08

David was also a beloved father to his children, Shana and Kurtis MacLean, Jana (Drew LeClaire) and Josh Fifoot and his two grandsons, Jaxon and Rylan. Countless lives have been touched by his unforgettable personality. He was always there for his brothers and sisters, Billy MacLean, Ontario, Audrey (Dave) Boudreau, New Waterford, Carol Ann (Mike) Harrietha, Glace Bay, Anita (Wayne) Chaisson, Ontario, Arlene (Kevin) McNeil, Halifax, Robert MacLean (Chris), New Waterford, Lisa (Kenny) MacDonald, New Waterford, and Randy MacLean, Ontario. He will be loved and missed by all his nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. David will also be missed by the Fifoot family. He was a former employee of Sobeys for many years. To say he was a handyman would be a tragic understatement. David was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping trips with his family and friends. He was a selfless person whose attitude was 'I can do that,' 'we can have that done in no time' or 'when can we start'. David has countless friends, who he was never too busy to take time to visit. A lot of David's time was spent with his best friends Buddy Fifoot and John and Janet Eyking. Our lives have been changed forever. David gave this world the greatest gift it could have asked for . . . himself. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass for David will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation, or any charity. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J.
