    3. THE SYDNEY RECORD, SATURDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 25, 1915 DEATH OF JOS. MATHESON The death of Joseph Matheson, ex-M.P.P., L'Ardoise, a well known public man of Richmond county, occurred at his home at that place yesterday. Mr. Matheson, who is 83 years of age, had been active in Richmond county politics for a period of some 30 years up to 1904, when he retired into private life. In the elections of 1878 and 1882 he was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the local house, but was elected in 1886 and again in 1890. In 1894 he was defeated by John Morrison of St. Peters. The latter, however, being unseated, Mr. Matheson was again successful in the ensuing election. He retired from the local assembly in 1897, and in 1900 was elected to the Dominion parliament, defeating J.A. Gillies, K.C., the sitting member. In 1904 Mr. Matheson definitely retired from politics and has lived a retired life at his home at L'Ardoise. His wife predeceased him some years ago. Mrs. L.E. Jost of Sydney, a sister-in-law of the late Mr. Matheson, left by this morning's train to attend the funeral. submitted by es718 <es718@freenet.carleton.ca>

    3. The Sydney Record - September 23, 1915 DEATH OF WELL KNOWN EDITOR A telegram received by Judge L. X. MacDonald of the probate court yesterday from St. Louis, Mo., contained news of the death in that city on Tuesday last of Rev. Fr. D. S. Phalen, editor of the Western Watchman, probably the most prominent Catholic journal on the continent. The late Fr. Phalen was born at North Sydney over seventy years ago and has several relatives in Cape Breton. R.F. Phalen, barrister, of North Sydney is a cousin. The Sydney Record-Friday Evening - September 24, 1915 DEATH OF JOHN MACKAY There died at Ainslee Glen in the county of Inverness on the eighth day of September, one of the old landmarks in the person of John MacKay, in his 93rd year. He saw his native place pass from the forest primeval into the smiling meadows. He was an old school teacher and justice of the peace, who by conduct and precept, adorned his profession as teacher, and rendered justice and peace between man and man, when difficulties arose before him. As a member of the community he lived an exemplary and moral life. His wife predeceased him thirteen years ago. He leaves to mourn for a kind father, four sons and three daughters, Hugh, living in Eureka, N.S., Neil and Peter, both of Thorburn; James in the west; Mrs. James Phillips, Margaree; Mrs. Walter Burton, Brookline, Mass., and Miss Kate at the old homestead.     3. The Sydney Record - Monday Evening - September 20, 1915 SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. A MCEACHERN (Special to the Record) North Sydney, Sept. 20 - One of the best known of the old time residents of Sydney Mines passed away on Thursday last in the person of Mrs. Angus McEachren. Convent Street. While not in good health for some time, deceased was able to be about the house the day before death. Mrs. McEachren, who was a sister of Mayor McCormack, by her kindly manner, had endeared herself to a large circle of friends at Sydney Mines, and surrounding districts, who will regret to hear of her demise. Besides her husband, she is urvived by three brothers, Messrs. John John, Daniel and Alex McCormack, and three sisters, Misses Matilda and Elizabeth, Mrs. (Dr.)T.H. Smith, North Sydney, and Mrs Bateman, of Boston. Interment took place on Saturday morning at St. Mary's cemetery. She was the mother of the late Mrs. J.R. Blackett, formerly of Glace Bay, and is survived by two sons and three daughters. The sons are Dr. John McKay, Windsor, and Dr. Victor McKay, Halifax.     3. The Sydney Record - Saturday Evening, September 18, 1915 RECOVER BODY OF JOS. GEORGE The remains of Joseph George, the seaman who disappeared last Sunday afternoon while canoeing, was recovered from the harbor about 11 o'clock this morning, after a search had been made during the past seven days. The body was noticed by the captain and men of the Electric Company's ferry steamer "Electronic" floating off the wharf at Point Edward, while on her 10:10 trip to North Sydney, where on her arrival the Sydney office was at once notified and the body was picked up and landed at McKinnon's wharf. The remains were at once removed to Beaton's undertaking rooms, where they will remain until their removal to Halifax which will likely be done tomorrow night. The body (was?) a fine state of reservation considering the length of time it has lain in the water, though the clothes are badly torn, and there are a number of bruises and marks on the face and hands. The deceased was a young man about 20 years and a native of Halifax. He was a trimmer on one of the patrol ships, and was a general favorite among his comrades. **************** The Sydney Record, September 20, 1915 BODY SENT HOME The body of the late Joseph H. George, trimmer, who was drowned in the harbor Sunday before last, was sent to his home at Halifax for interment, by last nights express. The Sydney Record - September 14, 1915 DROWNED IN CALIFORNIA The Oakland, Cal., "Maple Leaf" announces the death of Peter McIntyre, formerly of Big Pond, and a son of the late James McIntyre, of that place. Mr. McIntyre, who was a resident of San San Francisco, was drowned when returned from a gathering of the Scottish Thistle club, on July 5th. He was last seen alive as he boarded the train for the ferry. His body was found floating in the bay. Mr. McIntyre was sixty years of age and had been in his younger days a crack runner and walker winning many medals and trophies for these events at different meets. He was unmarried. The funeral was under the auspices of the Caledonia Club. Interment being at Holy Cross cemetery, San Francisco. THE SYDNEY RECORD FRIDAY EVENING OCTOBER 8, 1915 DIED IN HOSPITAL The death of Mrs. Christie MacKay, widow of the late Malcolm MacKay of MacKays corner, Glace Bay, occurred at the general hospital there yesterday morning after an illness of many years. The deceased was a native of Grand River, Richmond Co., and was aged 72 years. Besides other relatives living abroad she is survived by one son, deputy Stipendiary D.L. McKay, and a daughter Mrs. John N. McDonald, residing at Glace Bay, three sisters, Mrs. Rebecca McDonald and Mrs. William Campbell in Glace Bay and Mrs. Lizzie McKenzie in Sydney and three brothers Rev. J.W.     3. THE SYDNEY RECORD OCTOBER 4, 1915 FUNERAL OF EVA MACDONALD The funeral of the late Miss Eva Macdonald took place from her mother's residence, Harrison court, on Saturday morning. The services were conducted by Rev. John MacIntosh. A large concourse of people followed the remains to Hillside Cemetery, Mira, where they were laid to rest beside those of the father and little brother. The deceased young lady was 17 years of age and is survived by her mother and five brothers Mrs. MacDonald has the deep sympathy of her many friends in her sad bereavement and many tokens of this were in evidence among the floral tributes which comprised: Sheaf, Falmouth Bible class; sheaf, Mr. and Mrs. Ed McPherson; spray, Mrs. C.F. The Sydney Record - Saturday Evening, September 18, 1915 FELL OVERBOARD AND DROWNED (Special to the Record) North Sydney- Sept. 18-A very sad drowning accident occurred on the harbor yesterday afternoon when a well known and respected young citizen, Rod Steele, of this town lost his life. The deceased, who has been for a long time employed by the I.C.R. as brakeman, was on his way home from Sydney on the four o'clock trip of the Electronic and in some unaccountable manner fell overboard and was drowned before a boat could be got to him. Mr. Steele, who was a son of Mr. Alexander Steel, Gan(t/n?) on Road was about thirty-five years of age. He is survived by a widow and family of young children, also by his parents, three sisters and three brothers. The Hygea and tug Zadie are still dragging for the body. ********************* The Sydney Record - September 30, 1915 BODY RECOVERED The body of the late Rod Steele was found floating in the harbor yesterday by Ignatius Munn, of South Bar, about a half mile below the International Piers. Coroner Townsend was notified and the remains were brought to Sydney to Beaton's undertaking rooms, where an inquest will be held this afternoon. Steele fell from the Electronic about ten days ago on a passage from Sydney to North Sydney. ********************* THE SYDNEY RECORD OCTOBER 2, 1915 ACCIDENTAL DEATH A verdict of accidental death was found on investigation by Coroner Townsend's inquest into the death of Rod Steele, who was drowned by falling from the C.B.E. ferry steamer Electronic. The remains will be taken to North Sydney on Sunday, when the funeral will take place. FUNERAL OF RODK. STEELE The funeral of the late Rodk. Steele will take place from the undertaking parlors of A.J. Beaton & Son on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock to the Ferry Wharf.
