Cape Breton Deaths November 26, 2008 Laura Anne MacIsaac 19, Liverpool - It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved daughter Laura. She was beautiful on the outside and even more on the inside. No more suffering, no more pain, she is now in the kingdom of God as His chosen angel. He must have needed her more than us. She passed away peacefully on Nov. 23, 2008, at Valley Regional Hospital, following surgery. Born May 4, 1989, in Liverpool, N.S., she was a graduate of Liverpool Regional High School and had intended to enter Saint Francis Xavier University in September of 2008 to the faculty of nursing. It was both the family history of attendance, as well as the coveted "X" ring, which Laura wanted so badly, that drew her to St. F.X. However, due to her ongoing illness, she had to defer her education. It was her dream to graduate with her nursing degree and join the team of Doctors Without Borders to care for those in need in foreign countries. She had an avid interest in curling, travelling, music, scrapbooking and animals. Laura is survived by her parents, Goretti and Duncan and a cherished brother, Neil. She is also survived by her two beloved therapy dogs, Lochie and Brodee. Also surviving are her maternal grandmother, Ann Deveau, Antigonish, and her paternal grandmother, Gladys MacIsaac, Glace Bay. She is also survived by her aunts, Rosaline Deveau, Lantz, Barbara Taylor (Robert), Mary Lou Mac Donald (Hughie), uncles, Leo (Marie), Robert, all of Glace Bay, Michael (Joanne), Sydney Forks, Uncle Jim Williams (Uncle Dim as she affectionately called him), Fort McMurray, and many caring cousins. She was predeceased by grandfathers, Henry Deveau, Cheticamp, and Duncan MacIsaac Sr., Glace Bay, as well as her uncle and godfather, Paul MacIsaac, Glace Bay. To the many doctors and nurses who cared for Laura, we are forever grateful. Laura would want special mention of the members of the Pain Clinic at the IWK, Dr. Finley (who she always called her big teddy bear), Dr. Gregoire, and clinical nurse Paula Forgeron, as well as Dr. Doucet, Dr. Gunn and Dr. Hamm. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 27 from 7-9 p.m. at Chandler's Funeral Home in Liverpool. Funeral mass will be held Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory's Catholic Church on Old Bridge Street in Liverpool. Memorial donations may be made to the Liverpool Regional High School Foundation, c/o PO. Box 1266, Liverpool, N.S., B0T 1K0 in remembrance of Laura. Online condolences may be sent through www.chandlersfuneral.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Edith 'Edie' McGillivary 81, Dominion - Edith McGillivary, age 81, of Royal Avenue, Dominion, and a former resident of 1-B Road, Glace Bay, passed away on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at her home in Dominion. Hi -- Alexander Richardson, born Aberlady, East Lothian, Scotland in 1753, married Ann Whittingham 1779 in Chelsea, Mddx, England (my 4 ggparents). Immigrated to PEI (according to a "history" written by a distant cousin) shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War. I did some research on Alexander some years ago when I was at the LDS Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. In this "history" it states that he had a brother who lived on Cape Breton, but they evidently didn't communicate. From the parish registers of Aberlady (Scotland), I found three siblings for Alexander, two of whom died a short time after birth, and a brother, Robert, born 1745. Now, from prior research, I've found a Robert Richardson in Cape Breton so now I'd like to see if I can somehow either confirm or eliminate this Robert as Alexander's brother. Could anyone give me suggestions as to where to go with my research? A trip to the Maritimes isn't possible -- so are there other things I could try? Any help would be appreciated. Caper's Comin' for Christmas....... A man in Cape Breton calls his son in Fort McMurray the day before Christmas Eve and says, 'I hate to ruin your day bye', but I have to tell you that your ma and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.' 'Da, what ta hell are you talking bout?' the son screams. 'We can't stand the sight of each other any longer,' the father says. 'We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sis' in CowTown and tell her.' Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. 'Like hell they're getting divorced,' she shouts, 'I'll take care of dis,' She calls Cape Breton immediately, and screams at her father, 'You are NOT getting no divorce. Don't do a damm thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be thar tomorrow. Until then, don't ya do a damm thing, DO YOU HEAR ME PA ?' and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. 'Okay love,' he says, 'they're coming for Christmas - and they're paying their own way.' author unknown.......
The simple answer to your question is maybe. Angus MacDonald is/was a very common name, but Mary MacDonald was even more common. How about the 1911 census - where did they live? St. Margaret's? Angus remarried in 1916, he had 3 daughters by Mary Ann, the last one born in 1913. On the Cape Breton Genealogy site I have found a Mrs Mary MacDonald born 1889 died June 28 1915 in St Margarets of Nyphritis. Robert, you are correct about the name of this Funeral Director, unfortunately I can't confirm the closing date. In the Cape Breton Telephone Directory dated October 1935, there is a listing in New Waterford for "LeDrew, Geo. Funeral Supplies, County Road (Phone # ..34)". Perhaps the present day V.J. McGillivary Funeral Directors (1-902-862-6439) took over from LeDrew's or they may have some idea of what happened to their records if they are not already at the Beaton Inst. at U.C.B.?? They are my other Burke family from the Main a Dieu area. They are Irish from a Daniel Burke who landed there about 1760. Moses Gallant is the son of Casmier Gallant who was the son of Louis Gallant and he too married into the Burke family. James Boone came from England and married into the Burke family. They are all my relatives. As for The Harts they married into the Gallants and Burke families but not mine. Other distant cousins that I am in touch with could help you if you wish because they are from that branch. My family from the area are Mullins, Burkes, Martell, Buckley, Gallants. Dear List, Would anyone know a source for older maps of Sydney Mines? Have been looking for Cresent Street. A great aunt, Jessie (Matheson) Harvey, (widow) is living there in 1911 with children Roosevelt and Willemina (both born in Boston). As this family was back and forth between Sydney Mines and Boston, it has been a long search to find anything about them. The only other source, the 1930 MA census gave the married name as Harney, which added considerably to the search, even with using variations. Incidentally, in May this year NS Archives posted additional records - this lead to finding Jessie and two siblings in 1949. Sheila Matheson

Nellie Jones who died in Sydney in 2001 was the daughter of Archibald MacDonald and Sarah MacDonald. For years I had been told by a cousin that Nellie had been married to a MacIvor first and had had one son with him. Recently reading Nellie's obit and a write up on her brother Daniel in the book "In the Morning" I have come to the conclusion that it wasn't Nellie who had married a MacIvor but her mother folloing the death of Archibald in 1919 however I can find no record of this marriage. In Nellie's obit it also mentions a brother Murdock who predeceased her for whom I can also not find any record. Her obit does say she is survived by a brother Malcolm MacIvor but Murdock is listed with the MacDonald children so I am not sure of his surname. Any help would be greatly appreciated Shirley
