    3. To add to Colin's description here is something else that I came across that may be of interest to some: What eventualy became Alder Point used to be included in the district of Little Bras d'Or. It was changed with the introduction of the telegraph (early 1900's) office at Arsenault's Store in Alder Point. There is a yarn that has merit that Captain John Arsenault when he got the telegraph office was also directed to rename the place and asked his daughter Theresa for her opinion. She stated because the place was overrun with alders that they call it Alder Point - he did. Theresa later became Mrs. Walter Dugas who in later years ran the post office and the telegraph office in Alder Point. The name Little Bras d'Or was officially dropped in the 1940's and replaced with the name Bras d'Or. Many people along with businesses including the Canadian National Railways continued for many years to use Little Bras d'Or in their advertising and correspondence. I even see Little Bras d'Or listed on maps describing the area from the Sydney side of the Bras d'Or gut from Bras d'Or corner up to the Johnson Road as Little Bras d'Or. Mabel, known affectionately as "The Ma" by those who knew her best and loved her most, was well known for the profound impact she had on countless students who were fortunate to have been taught by her. A teacher for many years, Mabel exemplified the philosophy of life-long learning. After attending Normal College in Truro in 1928, Mabel started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Donkin. By the late 1980s, she returned to the classroom, this time as a student at UCCB, proudly graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1985. Her accomplishments were many, but her greatest was her role as matriarch of a loving family. Mabel found most satisfaction in her role of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family unconditionally and her absence will be deeply felt. Although sad to say goodbye to Ma, we are happy that after a long, fruitful life, in her 99th year she may now find rest. 1. [NS-CB] Re; Boularderie And Big Bras D'or
    2. Colin Waye
    3. I'll add my 2 cents to the discussion on the Bras D'or It seems like most place names around here they were named because of the water passages. Boularderie Island has water channels on either side. Big Bras D'or is the wide one and therefore the name, as the big entrance into the Bras D'or lakes The Seal island Bridge now spans this channel which was once serviced by Ross Ferry As you drive along the South side of Boularderie, you go through Hillside Boularderie, Boularderie West, Kempt Head and to the Seal island Bridge. On the other side of the Trans Canada, the commnity on the north side of the bridge carries the name Big Bras D'or. The other side of Boularderie, closest to Sydney, the channel is very narrow and is called Little Bras D'or. This side is spanned by a Highway bridge.Once serviced by Hawley's Ferry. Many know it as MacNeil's Cove. George's River is on one side and South side Boularderie the other. Farther up one can look across easily from Point Aconi on Boularderie to Alder Point.on the main section. I have seen several maps, that for some reason don't show this channel, and show Boularderie connected, which makes it not look like an island. Some of the place names seem split now, but they were all named before the Trans Canada Highway went through and divided up the island Colin Waye

Condolences can also be sent to the MacAulay family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Just A Common Soldier He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion telling stories of his past. Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies, they were heroes, every one. And though sometimes to his neighbours, his tales became a joke, All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer, for old Bill has passed away, And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today. He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us we may need his like again. For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part Is to clean up all the troubles that others often start. If we cannot give him honour, while he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage, at the ending of his days.Perhaps a simple notice in a paper that would say, "Our country is in mourning, cause a soldier passed away." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Gordon MacLeod 1914-2008 Sydney Mines - It is with deep regret we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, John Gordon MacLeod, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008. 2. Carol MacLean
    3. Yes folks, we had SNOW today.......10 cm and more to come tonight.....& wind chill of -17C.....which is very cold for Vancovuer.....the dampness goes right through you......when thawing out, it's just a burning sensation which is very painful...... Roads are a mess, very slippery, yes they are salted, but it's mixed with sand.....which in itself is dangerous as sand has an oil base, and thrown over ice, is a killer. I worked outside for six hours today, doing the Christmas Kettles, on the windest (sis) street corner in Vancouver...and the snow was heavy, along with bitterly cold wind,,,,,,,,,bbbuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrr...... Even the finger tips are still thawing out, and they were in mitts...... I've got five more days left of this and then it's indoors til next spring sometime.....I will be hibernating like a bear and staying nice and warm... Good ole Cape Breton Hot Chocolate made with can milk sure feels good right now....... I see the obits finally came through......... 3. Hi folks, I've tried for years to find out anything on my ggg-grandfather(Donald Campbell),but have come up with absolutely nothing. He left Scotland anytime between 1790-1820,so too early for the 1841 Scottish census, and way too early for the 1881 Inverness ,CB census. My 3 main sources are: Hart's historical family sketches(1960) A Presbyterian Minister (1920's) McDougal's History of Inverness County(1922) I'm wondering if it's viable or even possible that I find all Donald Campbells in Cape Breton and try and eliminate them as much as possible, surely there are not too many. Any suggestions ? Try to do or say something nice to someone today ! _________________________________________________________________ Discover the new Windows Vista http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=windows+vista&mkt=en-US&form=QBRE

    3. Bernie, In " A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederation" Volume 2 Donald Whyte lists 25 Donald Campbell's that emigrated. If you could tell me from whence he came and to where he went, I could narrow this down for you. His birth year could also narrow down even further. 3. Hi Lauren, The Acadians had the custom of marking graves with a white cross, sometimes it was fancy and called a French Cross. The native people adopted this custom and it remains today. 3. The cemetery was probably the First Nation Cemetery at Waycobah (Whycocomagh), or the First Nation Cemetery at Nyanza. Both of these Cemeteries had white wooden crosses, as well as grave stones. I thought I was in all three places as I was driving around, but now I'm thinking they just put those signs up to confuse tourists like me! Just got back in and after reading you message I think I can identify where your photo's are. The Little Red General Store I do believe is the old MacNeil General Store in what would be considered South Side Little Bras d'Or. Been in the shop several times in the past few years but the name of it fails to come to mind. The Church across the water is St. Joseph's R.C. and located in Little Bras d'Or. The third photo I believe is in Big Brad d'Or just a short distance from St. James Presbyterian Church. Will do up the remarks about the TWO Little Bras d'Or which you might find very interesting. 3. Hi Lauren: Big Bras D'Or and Little Bras D'Or are both on Boulardarie Island. There is a twist. Big Bras D'Or is in Victoria county and the latter is in Cape Breton county. Then there is Little Bras D'Or Southside which is also in Cape Breton County. In most cases Little Bras D'Or is considered part of the community Bras D'Or. I spent an afternoon in Big Bras D'Or and of course I passed through Little Bras D'Or on the way from Sydney. In Big Bras D'Or you get a splendid view of Seal Island Bridge. Hope this hasn't confused you completely. Cheers, Wilf
