    1. [NS-CB] obit of.. CALDER, J. Frederick (Fred), 52 yrs
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. http://www.ofba.ca/about.html THE FRED CALDER "FIRE BUFF OF THE YEAR AWARD" The late J. Frederick (Fred) Calder, who proudly hailed from Glace Bay Nova Scotia, always had an abiding interest in, and love for, the fire service. As a result, it was no surprise when in 1963 Fred became a professional firefighter and joined the Toronto Fire Department. He carried Badge No. 641. Fred who last drove Pumper No. 34 out of the north end Yonge Street Station, came from a real family of firefighters. It all began in 1907 when James A. Calder (Fred's grandfather) was elected a member of the Glace Bay Fire Department. As he held a 'Steam Engineer's Certificate', he was named an engineer on the "John Leaman", a 1904 Waterous steam fire engine named after the department's first Chief. In 1918, when Glace Bay acquired its first piece of motorized apparatus, a 1917 LaFrance Type 75 Triple Combination, James was appointed operator and caretaker and became Glace Bay's first full time member. His son, Fred W. Calder, joined the department as a spare driver in 1927 and in 1938 became assistant operator and the department's second paid man. James A. was promoted to Captain in 1933, a rank he held until his death in 1956. At that time, Fred W. was appointed Captain and chief operator and caretaker and retired in 1975. Fred's career with the Toronto Fire Department was like most others and he moved from station to station as he gained experience and qualified to drive the various apparatus. He never considered 'going into work' to be a chore and always looked forward to being with his 'second family'. He was a real people person and especially enjoyed whenever young people visited his hall. He would spend hours on the apparatus floor answering their questionsŠ.and often a bit more. Fred also built and collected fire apparatus miniatures and models in his spare time. When he died in 1991 at the age of 52, his basement was full of un-built kits waiting their turn at the hands of a caring and methodical craftsman. The Toronto Fire Department lost a most dedicated fire fighter. The OFBA lost a very special friend, a former Executive Officer and active member. A tradition of over 109 years of active firefighting in the Calder family has also come to an end. Fred Calder's contribution to fire buffing, to the preservation of ex-T.F.D High Pressure Number 2 and other apparatus and other firematic items will long be remembered and appreciated. His skill as a model builder was, and is, legendary. As a means of perpetuating Fred's memory and measuring his achievements, the O.F.B.A. in 1992 established the "Fred Calder Fire Buff of the Year Award". The Award, when presented, is to recognize an individual fire buff or buffs, who have made a significant contribution towards furthering either the cause of Fire Buffing or promoting the general welfare of the Fire Service. Recipients of the Award likely have an active interest in a host of activities designed to aid or promote either Fire Buffing or the Fire Service. These interests could include furnishing a canteen service for a local fire department, or recording the past by preserving pieces of antique fire apparatus and other firematic memorabilia or by publishing photographic histories of firedepartments and fire apparatus.

    3. Cape Breton Deaths January 12, 2009 Monday Thomas James O'Brien 60, Glace Bay - Now gone but forever in our hearts we announce the passing of Thomas James O'Brien on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital's An Cala Palliative Care Unit. Born in Glace Bay, Sept. 2, 1948, he was the son of Alphonse and Viola 'Lu' (Walsh) O'Brien. Tom was a proud serving member of the Canadian Forces for 30 years. His hard work and dedication allowed him to achieve the rank of captain, prior to his retirement in 1996. Although retired, he still loved the military life and looked on with pride as several of his nephews and a niece chose the military as careers. Aside from his professional achievements Tom will be fondly remembered for his love of sports. Upon his retirement, he took up the game of golf and could be found every morning on the greens of Passchendaele Golf Course, honing his skills. 1. [NS-CB] MACNEIL, Michael, 1852 - 1938 LIGHT-KEEPER
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. The Coastal Courier - Glace Bay October 10, 1984 - Wednesday MICHAEL MACNEIL - LIGHT-KEEPER J. Earle Pemberton was another of Glace Bay's great story gatherers and at one time published a small sheet called "Punching With Pemberton" which contained many items of interest to sportsmen. He also had many stories to tell of the early days in Glace Bay. One story concerned the life and times of a Mr. Michael MacNeil, a Cape Breton light-keeper who passed away in 1938. He was born at Castle Bay in 1852, was seventeen when Confederation was celebrated, and later worked in collieries in Pictou, Sydney Mines, Reserve, Gowrie in Morien, and Bridgeport and was quite accustomed to the difficulty of travelling in those days. He had worked at the old Sterling Mine when it was operated by Mr. Mitchell and Charles Rigby and later became a veteran teamster, running the stage from Bridgeport to different parts of the colliery district. His last job, as a driver, was that of transporting a Mrs. Nolan and her six children, who had arrived that day from Inverness, to Caledonia. The following day, the Sydney and Louisbourg Railway was completed and had its first train service. This Mr. MacNeil came to Glace Bay in 1869. He had worked as a trapper in the pits at Morien and then as a coal digger in Bridgeport, at a time when, naturally, there were no paved highways such as exist today. The road from South Head went along the shore clear around to Lingan, and then continued on to Sydney and was not even negotiable by wagon. Therefore, when supplies were needed, a horse and saddle was pressed into service to make the long, hard journey. This Mr. MacNeil was keeper of the light at the Port of Glace Bay (then Little Glace Bay) and it was one of his duties every evening, rain or shine, to light the lamp and set the storm signals to warn fishermen of approaching danger at sea. He often recalled the busy days of Glace Bay Harbour when it was possible to walk from one side to the other, so closely packed were the vessels. These were the prosperous days of Glace Bay, made so by the continous arrival of vessels and steamers here for supplies of coal. Mr. MacNeil was also noted for his insistence on impressing the government with the necessity of placing harbours and piers in first class condition, something which is still being stressed with great improvements taking place in the summer of 1984. Mr. MacNeil was also rememered vividly by senior citizens of this town for he was, in 1927 when St. Joseph's Hospital celebrated it's twenty-fifth birthday, the leader of the Jubilee Celebrations Parade. Attired in a Prince Albert rock suit, "vintage of 1880", Mr MacNeil, was an outstanding figure, flanked by the Misses Coady and Shannon of the nursing staff. This Mr. Michael MacNeil died in 1938, predeceased by his wife a number of years before. A son, James P. MacNeil, who resided on the old homestead, died in 1955. One of Michael MacNeil's special stories, concerning a first contact with store bought flour, will be told in another issue of the Coastal Courier. **************************************************************************

    3. Hi folks, Over Christmas, I was the recipient of over 650 older obituaries for people with connections to the Margaree area; most from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. As they are mostly image files (only 6 or so are text files), I can’t post them here. Instead, I will post lists of what I have in groups of 10, one or two per day, and will be happy to send them individually. Because of the volume, please don’t ask for them all, as I don’t want to tick of my internet provider . Also because of the volume, please be patient as I respond to specific requests.
