    3. Cape Breton Deaths January 14, 2009 Karen V.P. Holm Shaw 86, New Waterford - Karen Holm Shaw, 86, of MacLeod Avenue, formerly known as Maple Hill, where she was raised, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 9, 2009. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Hans and Petrine (Pedersen) Holm. Karen was born on Wood Avenue in 1922. At the age of eight her family moved to 'Maple Hill.' She began her musical career at the tender age of four. Her older brother Gordon taught her to play piano, accordion, mandolin and banjo. Later, with her sister Gloria, she learned to tap dance as a pupil of Doris MacDonald. In her early 20s, Karen again followed her brother into the Canadian Army and was stationed in numerous locations. After the Second World War she served overseas, during the occupation of Germany, as a police woman at Nazi trials. While overseas, Karen met Stewart B. Shaw who later became her husband. Married in 1946, the couple moved to the town of Arnprior, in the Ottawa Valley where they resided for nine years. During daylight hours they owned and operated Mainview Photo Studio. Karen also became a member of the well-known orchestra, 'Mac Beattie and the Ottawa Valley Melodiers,' and performed several times a week at various venues including CFRA Radio. Somewhere between photography and music she also found time to be Girl Guide commissioner. Karen returned to her hometown of New Waterford in 1956 with baby, Elizabeth (Betty). She continued her careers in photography and music, managing Meyer's Photo Studio in Glace Bay and performing in variety shows and on radio and television with well-known local musicians. Mom was an honorary lifetime member of Cape Breton Professional Musicians Association Local No. 355 and was a longtime member of the Everett Cann Orchestra. Mom really enjoyed working and 'playing' in her numerous flower beds and had a real love for the many birds that she fed year round. Being a very spiritual person, Mom had deep respect for God and His written Word, the Bible. After several years of Bible study she was happy to become a baptized member of the Glace Bay Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. From 1972 until her passing she always thought it a privilege to share her knowledge of the Bible and her hope for the future with friends and neighbours. James 4:8 is an appropriate scripture to describe her relationship with Jehovah God. "Draw close to God and He will draw close to you . . ."Surviving are daughter, Elizabeth 'Betty' (Joel) Young, Reserve Mines; stepson, Shane (Marlene) Tourangeau, Carp, Ont., Ottawa Valley; brother-in-law, Albert 'Blackie' Digero, New Waterford; several nieces and nephews. Karen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by brothers, Urban 'Dick' and Gordon, sisters, Carola, Tove, Thekla and Gloria. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Reserve Street, Glace Bay with Richard Volkes officiating. A reception will follow at the Kingdom Hall. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, at a later date. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ray MacPherson 86, Sydney - The family of Raymond Alphonse MacPherson regret to announce his passing after a long, intense battle with illness over the past three years, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009. Raymond will be remembered as a man with remarkable ethics whether it be work related (he was a sergeant with security at Sydney Steel for most of his working years) or interacting with numerous family and friends. He was always there with a helping hand or word for many. Raymond was a man of strong religious belief and faith as was evident by his involvement with the Men's Club and as a Eucharistic minister at St. Theresa's parish over the years. He was a familiar sight at daily mass and could be seen after mass 'fixing the books.' Raymond was a member of the Ashby Legion, Branch 138 and enjoyed his involvement especially selling poppies. Raymond will be remembered for many reasons but most of all he was a loving, caring father who taught us well, mostly by example. He was most loved and will be truly missed by all especially his loving wife of 63 years, Josephine (Sylvester) MacPherson. Raymond is survived by his five children, Ann Marie (Glen, deceased) Hill, Sydney, John (Diane), Missouri, U.S.A., Raylene (Yves) LeClerc, Ottawa, Marion (Michael) Silver, Halifax, Terry (Lynn), Halifax. Beloved poppie to grandchildren, John, Christopher and Becky MacPherson, Tracey Hill-Hannah and Craig Hill, Rene and Marc LeClerc, Aaron and Kyle MacPherson, Brandon and Ryan Silver. Also special extended granddaughters, Melanie, Amy and Kimberly Bonaparte and their parents, Marilyn and Mike. Poppie dearly loved his great-grandchildren, Cody and Kelsy MacPherson, Jade Hannah and Presley LeClerc. Raymond was the last surviving member of his immediate family and is survived by sister-in-law, Lucy (Robert) Ramey, and special nephew, Robyn (Christie) Foret, Calgary. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews whose lives Raymond continued to be involved with until his illness prevented him from doing so. Raymond was predeceased by his parents, John V. and Annie (MacKinnon) MacPherson, brothers, John, Dan and Bernie, sisters, Mary MacNeil and Florence Ling, sisters-in-law, Dorothy MacPherson and Eileen MacPherson and brothers-in-law, Tom Ling and Dan MacNeil. 3. I have just completed a major update on my website, Cape Bretoners in World War Two, www.ww2.cb-ns.org/index.htm Since my last update in April 2008 I have been able to add an additional 148 names to my database and update 370 already in my database, with the help of those that contributed information to me as well as additional obituaries and sources I have on hand. The help is very much appreciated. However I am still requesting assistance for new information, corrections, etc. I have also added individual pages for 72 fatal casualties in 1941, continuing from the 14 for 1939 and 1940 with more to come in the next few months. You can find the links on the fatal casualties page. Please visit or re-visit my web site and send your comments to me. Your input is very much appreciated. Thanks very much. 3. http://www.lynnlake.ca/A_Place_to_Remember_122.htm ejszekrenyes@sasktel.net A Place to Remember P.O. Box 89 Cochin, SK S0M 0L0 306-386-2245 IN MEMORIAM Winnie Tanasichuk forwarded this obituary: BREWER, James Roy (Jim) With his wife and children by his side, James Roy (Jim) Brewer, age 52, passed away on January 20th, 2007 in the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. Jim was born in Glace Bay, NS and at a young age moved to Lynn Lake, MB where he began his mining career working for Sherritt Gordon Mines. In 1978 he married Barb Dulewich and together they raised three children. In 1985 the family moved to Marathon, ON where he was employed with Williams Operating Corp. Due to kidney failure in 1992, Jim began dialysis. In 1996, the family moved to Thunder Bay so he would no longer have to travel to receive his dialysis treatments. Jim loved his family. His main goal was to see his kids grow up and be happy. He was always bragging on how successful his kids were in their careers. Hockey was his passion. When he was unable to play himself, he became involved with Minor Hockey. He was never prouder than the times he watched his son on the ice. Jim thoroughly enjoyed a day at the arena especially if there was an opportunity to ½stir the pot…. Jim truly loved the outdoors; fishing and hunting were in his blood. There are many tales to tell, but few can be repeated here. In the last few years, his grandchildren were the light of his life. When his grandson was born, he was so thrilled and excited that he took off down the expressway to the hospital on his scooter to see him. Jim was the life of the party. He loved a good time and a great joke. He was always good natured and never complained even through the toughest times. Jim was constantly singing and loved singing especially to his grandchildren. He had a talent for making up his own words and tune as he went along. Jim was blessed with great family & friends and was truly thankful for their ongoing support. We would like to thank to the Doctors and staff of the Renal Unit for their care and compassion for the past 14 years.. The staff and other patients were a very important part of Jims life and became very much an extended family. He had the greatest respect for Dr. McCready. The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for his support especially in Jims final days. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Margaret (1983) and James (2007), brother in law, Kevin, and father in law, Nick. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Barb, daughters, Jennifer (Kevin), Jamie (Len), and son James (Lily), grandchildren Taylor and Cameron, brother Jerry (Jackie), sisters, Patsy, Donalda (Art), and Darlene, mother in law, Stella, sister in laws, Debbie, Cheryl (Pete), brother in laws, Audie (Sheila), and Terry (Sharyn) and many nieces and nephews. 1. [NS-CB] obit of.. DEMONT, Eric Gordon, 80 yrs
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/Deaths.20080308.93143471/BDASto ry/BDA/deaths Saturday March 8, 2008 Globe and Mail DeMONT, Eric Gordon, Q.C. - 80 Died in his sleep at his winter retreat in Hilton Head Island Thursday, March 6, 2008. Born August 29th, 1927 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, he was the second of three boys born to Clarence and Mabel (nee MacKeigan) DeMont. Eric is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia (nee Rowe) and his three children, Christy (Toronto), Frank (Robyn Eaton) (New Glasgow) and Richard (Montreal) and his two beloved grandchildren, Isobel Ruth and Campbell Eric, along with his brothers Earl (Rea) of Glace Bay and Russ (Joan) of Halifax. Eric graduated from Glace Bay's Central High School and from Acadia University, where he lettered in Rugby and Basketball and had great success in track and field. He then attended Dalhousie Law School (Class of 1956). It was during his days at Law School that Eric was introduced by brother Earl to Pat, a teacher and also a basketball player, who would become his bride the day after his graduation. During his articles, she supported him, and kept on doing so for the next 51 years. She taught him how to drive and how to be social at parties, with varying degrees of success. Eric was a member of the Nova Scotia and Ontario Bars and practiced law with Rutledge MacKeigan in Halifax before moving to Toronto where he became Regional Counsel for CP Rail. In 1978 Eric left CP and his office on Front Street in Toronto for an office on Main Street in Wolfville, NS where he worked until retirement in 2000. He traded his Central ''Y'' membership in for a ''gym pass'' at Acadia where he played basketball with the noontime crowd until well into his 60's. A long time member of the Rotary Club of Wolfville, Eric was a Paul Harris Fellow and a past- president of the Club. He left the Club, and Wolfville, in 2005 to relocate with Pat to Halifax. Eric was known to his friends and family as the quintessential arbiter of fairness. He would enjoy knowing that his children think of him as the ultimate reasonable man - as he would have it, the man on the Clapham Omnibus. (Although if one ever attributed that to him, he might give a brief dissertation on the test as set out in Hall v. Brooklands Auto-Racing Club.). He was a keen swimmer and his favourite place to be was the ''Bonavista Cottage'', the family vacation home at Melmerby Beach. Exiting the sometimes frigid waters of the Northumberland Strait, he always had the same refrain, ''the water is great!''. At 80, he was still improving his tennis game, reading the latest magazines on how to hit the topspin backhand that continued to elude him. A lifetime non-drinker and non-smoker, he was the self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur of the family, and his ongoing quest to brew the perfect cup was well-known to all his friends. His interests were wide and varied and included his painting and photography alongside his computer and web surfing. As a fan of Charlie Rose, he was obviously a night owl. An aficionado of the movies, Bob Newhart, and the Marx Brothers, Eric was always ready to laugh, and to make others laugh too. He was an avid cruciverbalist and enjoyed working away at the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle each week. A life long sports fan, he was delighted to watch his grandchildren play hockey, but didn't mind that the basketball games provided considerably warmer places to sit. Eric will be remembered for the funny stories about ''back in the day'' playing ''foot-n-a-half'' and chewing tar! With prosperity as a lawyer, he traded in the tar for the more acceptable black licorice. Eric has gone back to his personal ''Mira'' where he enjoyed his youthful summers in the 1930's and early 40's. Eric's legacy of fairness and laughter lives on in his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered at a memorial service at a later date. Eric would want all to remember the words of Groucho Marx, ''time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana!''. Memorial donations can be made to The Coady International Institute, at St. Francis Xavier University, (902 867-5264, www.coady.stfx.ca). Condolences can be sent to Pat and the Family at family@demonts.ca.

    1. [NS-CB] obit of.. PETRIE, Daniel, 63 yrs
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/daniel-petrie-550353.html from The Independent & The Independent on Sunday Obituaries Daniel Petrie Award-winning film and TV director Thursday, 26 August 2004 Independent.co.uk The director Daniel Petrie had a great critical success with his second film, an adaptation of the hit play A Raisin in the Sun (1961), starring Sidney Poitier, but television was to prove the medium in which he did his most distinguished work, including such outstanding TV films as Sybil (1976) and My Name is Bill W (1989) and two Emmy Award-winning mini-series about the Roosevelts. Daniel Petrie, film director: born Glace Bay, Nova Scotia 26 November 1920; married 1947 Dorothea Gundry (two sons, two daughters); died Los Angeles 22 August 2004. The director Daniel Petrie had a great critical success with his second film, an adaptation of the hit play A Raisin in the Sun (1961), starring Sidney Poitier, but television was to prove the medium in which he did his most distinguished work, including such outstanding TV films as Sybil (1976) and My Name is Bill W (1989) and two Emmy Award-winning mini-series about the Roosevelts. He was happiest dealing with real-life subjects or matters of social concern, and was noted for his handling of actors - among those he directed were Paul Newman, Richard Burton, Susan Hayward, Sir Laurence Olivier, Jane Alexander, Burt Lancaster, Ellen Burstyn and Jason Robards. Born in Glace Bay, in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1920, Petrie was educated at St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. After serving with the Canadian Army in the Second World War, he moved to New York in 1945. He made his Broadway début as an actor with a small role in the military comedy Kiss Them for Me (1945), the play in which Judy Holliday first attracted major attention. In 1950 he moved into television as a director, his early work including the live anthology series Robert Montgomery Presents and Somerset Maugham Theatre. In 1962 he made his first film, The Bramble Bush, starring Richard Burton as a doctor who returns to the small New England town of his birth to tend a dying friend and finds smouldering scandals and passions. Several critics praised Petrie for doing what he could with the over-heated material. His next film won him less qualified acclaim. Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun had been a major Broadway hit in 1959 starring Sidney Poitier as a young man whose mother (Claudia McNeil) hopes to use the money from her late husband's life insurance policy to move her family out of the black ghetto in Chicago. After Poitier takes the money to invest in a liquor store and his partner makes off with the funds, the family unite to determine that with hard work and sacrifice they will go ahead and move anyway. It was a powerful, moving drama and Hansberry herself adapted it for the screen. Working with seven of the original cast members, including Poitier, McNeil, Ruby Dee and Diana Sands, Petrie did a sterling job of keeping the stagebound piece cinematic, and it is generally considered his finest work for the big screen. His next movie, The Main Attraction (1962), a circus drama filmed in the UK, was an attempt by the teen singing idol Pat Boone to shed his clean-cut image, and it was a total misfire. Stolen Hours (1963) was a pointless remake of the Bette Davis classic Dark Victory (1939). The Idol (1966) was an embarrassing attempt at "swinging Sixties" melodrama, and evidence that when the material was weak Petrie had a tendency to overcompensate by encouraging florid performances. Petrie's first film comedy was The Spy with a Cold Nose (1966), in which a bulldog equipped with a radio transmitter is given to the Russian prime minister by British intelligence. He concentrated on television for the next few years, returning to film with The Neptune Factor (1973), an undistinguished undersea adventure. His next two films, Buster and Billie (1974) and Lifeguard (1976), were sensitive essays that deserved more success than they had. It was back to steamy sex for The Betsy (1978), adapted from Harold Robbins's raunchy best-seller. Its principal point of interest was the casting of Laurence Olivier in the leading role, prompting Andrew Sarris of the Village Voice to comment, "The spectacle of Sir Laurence, the lion of acting, cavorting on the screen like an old goat is a bit of breathtaking sacrilege that will undoubtedly sell tickets." Pauline Kael in The New Yorker was mischievously more positive, stating, "One begins to perceive the secret of his greatness: Laurence Olivier dares to be foolish. In The Betsy, he keeps on acting after everyone else has given up." Olivier himself stated that he enjoyed himself in the role. "It was a filthily vulgar part, the most awful character I've ever played in my life, and I enjoyed it highly." In Resurrection (1980) Petrie steered Ellen Burstyn to an acclaimed performance as a woman who discovers she has the power to heal the sick. Fort Apache: the Bronx (1981), a hard-hitting police yarn starring Paul Newman, had the virtues and faults of several Petrie films. Variety said, "Driving relentlessly to make points that are almost pointless, it is a very patchy picture, strong on dialogue and acting and exceedingly weak on story." Petrie returned to Nova Scotia to film The Bay Boy (1984), which he both wrote and directed, an autobiographical drama depicting his early life in the remote area of Glace Bay. It won Genie awards (Canada's equivalent to the Oscar) for best film and best screenplay. Square Dance (1986) was distinguished by Jane Alexander's performance as a neglectful mother, but there is little to be said for Petrie's subsequent films. It is for his television work that Petrie will be most fondly remembered. His award-winner The Dollmaker starred Jane Fonda as a farmer's wife who has to become the breadwinner during the Second World War. Petrie won the Peabody Award for Sybil (1976), an outstanding television drama which won an Emmy for Sally Field's uncompromising performance. Harry S. Truman: plain speaking (1976) was the first of several political biopics directed by Petrie. His mini- series Eleanor and Franklin (1976) was a loving transcription of Joseph P. Lash's Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Petrie won an Emmy for his direction, and the following year he won another for a sequel, Eleanor and Franklin: the White House years. Later he made Kissinger and Nixon (1995). He received Emmy nominations for five more TV movies, including the powerfully anti-capital-punishment work The Execution of Raymond Graham (1986) and My Name is Bill W (1989), in which James Woods gave a riveting performance as Bill Wilson, the man who co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous. Petrie's son Daniel said, "There's a common thread in all of his work of a real concern for the human condition." Tom Vallance
