    3. Cape Breton Deaths January 17, 2009 Jeanne Carol McNicol 93, Orangedale - Jeanne McNicol of Orangedale passed away peacefully at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009. Born Dec. 14, 1915, in New York to Caroline and Wesley Donohue. Devoted wife of the late Douglas McNicol for more than 50 years, and dear sister of the late Grace Higgins. She is survived by her nieces, Carolyn Higgins, Los Angeles, Calif., Christine Higgins Franzese (Gus), Southampton, N.Y., and many dear friends. Jeanne had many happy memories of her life on Long Island, N.Y., where she was a girl scout leader, an avid gardener, birdwatcher and naturalist. Jeanne and Doug moved to Malagawatch, Cape Breton in the late 1960s, and established the Blue Nose Oyster farm. Over the years, they became part of the community. Jeanne attended the Marble Mountain United Church, taught Sunday school, and established the "Junior Naturalists," welcoming local girls into her home to share her love of nature. Jeanne loved feeding and identifying wild birds, cross-country skiing and many other simple pleasures of Cape Breton. Jeanne was a person of strong character and boundless energy; she truly celebrated life, despite hardships like the early loss of her mother, the loss of her husband and sister, and in later years, vision and other health problems. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Inverness County Home Care, and the friends who visited and sent messages to Jeanne in her final months. Jeanne's final wish was to donate her remains to Dalhousie University, so that she could continue to contribute to the world. Jeanne's spirit will also live on in the hearts of many people whose lives she touched. A memorial service will be held at a later date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Bernard 'Bernie' Campbell 62, Glace Bay - It is with much sorrow that we announce the passing, on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, of John Bernard Campbell, surrounded by family, at his home on Main Street, Glace Bay. 3. Cape Breton Deaths January 15, 2009 Mary Mildred Poirier 84, New Victoria - The family of Mary Poirier regret to announce her passing Jan. 13, 2009, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born May 15, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Hector Raymond and Rebecca (Garland) MacNeil. Deeply devoted to her faith, she was a member of St. Joseph Church, New Victoria. Mary was a loving wife and sister. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She said that her Golden Years were when she was raising her family. In more recent times she delighted in visits from her sons and daughters as they inevitably returned from far away places . . . with families of their own. Mary's faith was of particular importance to her and sustained her through loss of family members and frequent periods of illness. She welcomed her passing as the final cure and as an opportunity to be reunited with loved ones who went before. An avid reader, she had a keen interest in current events. She enjoyed sharing her views on politics and the news of the day. She held her positions strongly, rarely conceding to dissenting opinion. Mary is survived by loving sons, Fred (Ruth), Coxheath, David (Anita), Dubai, Hector (Rodena), Cochrane, Alta.; daughters, Louise (Harold) Dawe, Osoyoos, B.C., Linda (Paul Hemingson), Calgary, Alta., Eileen (Harold) Montgomery, Baddeck; daughter-in-law, Rita Poirier; grandchildren, Lindy Lou, Gus, Michael, Laura, Danielle, Hal, Raymond, Matthew, Michelle, David, Nicole, Samuel, Leah, Mark, Paul, Adam; 10 great-grandchildren. James (Jim) passed away peacefully at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital on Jan. 13, 2009. At the age of 19, Jim moved to Halifax to attend trade school, graduating as a heavy duty mechanic. He spent a number of years as foreman/mechanic in Halifax, Sydney and the Wreck Cove power plant. His love of the water found Jim devoting 35 years on the Bras d'Or Lakes fishing lobsters, later passing his knowledge of fishing to his two sons. He was very knowledgeable in whatever he put his hands and mind to. When he needed a house, he built it, when he needed a boat, he built it, when someone sought advice, he gave it, if it couldn't be bought, he made it. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed dearly. He is survived by his wife, Sheila (Mason), Halifax, of 53 years; daughter, Deborah (late Sandy) MacKay, Baddeck, grandsons, Matthew and Gregory, Alberta, Justin, Halifax, and great-granddaughter, Alexandra, Alberta; daughter, Alanna (Ernest) Carmichael, Blues Mills, grandson, E.J., Toronto, and granddaughter, Nicole; son, Kenneth (Karen) MacPhee, Big Bras d'Or, granddaughters, Heaven and Shelby; son, Richard (Dawn) MacPhee, Boularderie, granddaughter, Emily.
