    3. I thought of a couple of possible sources for finding my missing Alex and Christy Gillis and others. I will appreciate a lookup for Alex or Christy in One is Deed books, 1786-1912; index, 1786-1966 and specifically Grantor-grantee index, A - K 1865-1895 FHL US/CAN Film 0805845. If his film is available in a local FHC or other repository. This index should be at NSARM. Two is the Church map for CBC. If someone has access to this, whee Alex And Christy wire living and who their neighbors were. Three. Any directories for CBC for 1880s and later. The FHL catalog does not list any. bob gillis I wrote to the Cape Breton list: > My great uncle was Alexander Gillis was born Parish of Harris in Dec > 1840. 1. [NS-CB] A trip down memory lane - Could it happen in Cape Breton
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. http://thechronicleherald.ca/NovaScotia/1108592.html A trip down memory lane - Cumberland County seniors record life stories By TOM McCOAG Amherst Bureau AMHERST Fri. Feb 27 - 5:35 AM (Photo of the two women) Vera Furlong and Alice Hudson are two of 41 Cumberland County senior citizens whose life stories are told in a Cumberland County Genealogical Society project, Down Memory Lane. (TOM McCOAG / Amherst Bureau) VERA Furlong and Alice Hudson were surprised that anyone wanted to hear their life stories, let alone record them. "I never thought anyone would be interested, but they are," Ms. Hudson, 88, of Amherst said in a recent interview while sitting beside her longtime friend. "One of my DVDs is in Dallas, Texas, and there are others in Truro and Montreal." The DVDs describing their lives are part of Down Memory Lane, an effort of the Cumberland County Genealogical Society to record personal histories of people from Cumberland County. They have recorded the stories of 41 seniors since the project began about a year ago. The recordings were the brainchild of Susan Hill, a 25-year member of the genealogical society. "Through the society I met great people like Ernie Coates and Irene Melanson and her husband, Fred. I used to go to their places and be mesmerized by the awesome stories they told about what it was like when they grew up and worked in Cumberland County," Ms. Hill recalled. "I once remember Fred telling me how he picked up the SOS from the Titanic while listening to his ham radio in Joggins. He told his friends and neighbours the ship was sinking, but they all thought he was crazy because, after all, the Titanic was unsinkable. They only came to believe him when the story came out in the papers a couple of days later. "I often thought it would be neat to record those stories, but I never got the chance because they passed away." When she learned the federal government was giving out New Horizon grants that could be used to preserve history, she approached the 140-member genealogical society with a suggestion to videotape seniors telling their life stories. The society jumped at the opportunity, applying for and receiving a $16,200 grant. The society compiled a list of 80 seniors - all but one over the age of 85. Forty-one agreed to be taped. Along with the audio recollections, those who agreed provided pictures that could be woven into the story in post production. "I thought it was important to participate because we grew up in a completely different atmosphere than our kids," Ms. Furlong said. "We lived through the Depression in the 1930s, a world war. It was important to me that my kids and my grandchildren know what life was like then. It's also nice to leave them something to remember me by." Ms. Hudson nodded in agreement. "It's very important that we tell people what we did and how we lived because this is a completely different age." DVDs can be viewed at the society's Genealogical Centre on Church Street in Amherst and several schools have said they would like to use the videos when they teach local history to their students, Ms. Hill said. The DVDs can also be purchased from the society for $7.95. ( tmccoag@herald.ca)

    3. I tend to agree with Juanita (again!) - it's probably more likely that they were missed in the transcription than the census -individuals were often missed but not whole families. Otherwise you might try searching for their neighbours to see if they are there....

    2. Juanita MacDonald
    3. Hello Bob; I can't give you an estimate on how many people were missed on any given census. I can tell you this though, if you are sure that they are in the given area during the time of a census, it might take a page by page search of the images to find them. I recently was looking for several families, and knew they were in a particular area, and hadn't left it. Neither autogenealogy/archives canada/ancestry indexing had them. It took a page by page search of the area to finally discover them. They were there and under their own names spelled correctly. Everyone had missed the boat on transcribing the names correctly. Thank heaven the eneumerator didn't miss them. Happy hunting Juanita MacDonald ----- Original Message ----- From: "bob gillis" <robertgillis@verizon.net> To: "Cape Breton" <ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 2009 9:02 AM Subject: [NS-CB] Gillises missing from Census > My great uncle was Alexander Gillis was born Parish of Harris in Dec > 1840. 3. Hi Bob et all,     You have to watch the Gillises carefully.  They were always sneaky and often changed their name to that of the parent clan, MacDonald of Clan Ranald.  Later some would go back to the Gillis name, just to screw up the government and later genealogists.     I hope this helps. Faulkner, Roy 'Ken' K - published February 24, 2009 3. Kelly, Ruth Elizabeth - published February 24, 2009 ___________________________________________________________________________ Carly Bunyan, Troy Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, June 19, 1982 On Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, our Carly passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and friends. She was born on June 19, 1982, in Hamilton, Ont., but grew up on Cape Breton Island. Carly was the oldest daughter of John and Kathy (MacNeil) Bunyan, and loving sister of Paul, Jackie and Neil. Carly was an amazing young women who attained many remarkable accomplishments in her 26 years of life. She graduated from SAERC High School in 2000 as female athlete of the year. After graduating she went on to study at the University of Maine, on a full athletic scholarship. During her second year of studies she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and had to take a reprieve from her studies. However, as she expressed in her own words, “Giving up means you have to quit . . . I decided not to give up.” Staying true to her words, Carly went on to eventually graduate in 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from the University of Maine. She was a gold medal scholar-athlete award winner who maintained a high aggregate for the duration of her studies and remained on the Dean’s list. She was captain of the University of Maine women’s track team from 2005-2006. In 2005, she was recipient of the prestigious NCAA Wilma Rudolph Student Athlete Achievement Award in Raleigh, North Carolina, along with only three other individuals in the United States of America. However, she was the only non-American to receive this award — an award intended to honour student athletes who have overcome great personal, academic and/or emotional odds to achieve academic success while participating in intercollegiate athletics. Carly participated in two Canada Summer Games — one in London, Ont. in 2001 and the other in Regina, Sask. in 2005. In Saskatchewan she was the Team Nova Scotia flag bearer for the closing ceremonies of the Canada Summer Games — a unanimous decision by the track team. She also participated in many other sporting events such as the Junior Nationals and Legions. Carly still holds provincial records for the triple jump across four age classes. She was involved in many different sports in her lifetime, and a beautiful highland dancer who captivated everyone with her infectious smile. She was honorary chair for the Relay for Life in 2007, and was an inspirational speaker at various events. Carly travelled extensively in her lifetime — she went to Europe, saw the Mayan Ruins in Mexico, travelled across the country and participated in an archaeological dig at the Fortress of Louisburg. She had several interests and experienced many wonderful adventures. Carly went horseback riding and skiing in the Rocky Mountains, boating on lakes and the ocean, fishing, canoeing and four-wheeling. However, her favourite place to be was at the family sugar camp in Queensville. Carly and her father returned here every spring to tap the maple trees and to make maple syrup. This was a special place that the family visited. She loved music, guitar, dancing, track, meeting new people, travelling, laughing, purses, shopping, shoes, the outdoors, drawing, sports, animals, chocolate and archaeology. She described herself by saying, “I am a generally happy person . . . I like to party, like to have fun. I love sports, the beach and I especially love my family. Archaeology is my passion . . .” One of her favourite quotes was “Whether you think you can or think you can’t — you are right.” One year ago Carly’s brain tumour returned and eventually the cancer overtook her — but she made a gallant fight and lived twice as long as most individuals inflicted with this type of cancer. Through it all, she was always more concerned with others than herself. Carly will never be forgotten. Her beautiful smile, gentle demeanour, selflessness, courage and unwavering spirit will remain with us always. Besides being survived by her parents, John and Kathy, she is also survived by maternal grandparents, Isabelle (Billy Bouchie) and paternal grandparents, Frank Bunyan and Aleda Riendeau. She will be forever missed by her brother, Paul, Antigonish; sister, Jackie, Troy, and youngest brother, Neil, Troy; along with several aunts and uncles, Bernadette MacNeil, Fort McMurray, Barbara (Harvey MacKinnon), Port Hastings, Liz (Brian Johnston), Port Hastings, Viola MacLeod, Halifax, Carl MacNeil (Cathy), Halifax, Barry MacNeil (Carol), Halifax, Debbie (Tom Graham), Judique, Tammy Bunyan (Bobby), Port Hawkesbury, Bill (Carol Bunyan), Bridgetown, and Frances Chambers (Tim), Lower Sackville. She had a very special relationship with many of her cousins, Corey, Garret, Meghann, Kelsey, Marie, Hillary, Katie, Melanie, Jessie, Jody, Sarah, Amy, Bradley, Aaron, Dylan, Natasha, Jayde, Kaylee, Coleman, Billie Jean, Patrick, Tina, Gary, Chad, John, Kathleen, Maggie, Cassie, Hannah, Gracie, Michael, Willie and Eugene. She will also be remembered and cherished by her special love Adam Marchand and close friends, Candace, Staci and Emma, as well as her coach of many years, Lauchie Beaton. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Francis MacNeil, Uncle Gary MacDonald and Uncle John Francis MacNeil, who passed in infancy. The family would like to sincerely thank all those who attended and supported Carly in her last days; home support workers, nurses and palliative care in both Antigonish and Port Hawkesbury with special thanks to Nancy Cameron and Marie MacNeil. Her aunts, Tammy and Debbie felt privileged to lovingly care for her until the very end, along with her sweetheart, Adam. The presence of everyone — friends, relatives, her godmother and others meant the world at such a difficult time. Visitation will be held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury from 1-7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, with funeral Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Stella Maris Church, Creignish, with Fr. Hughie D. MacDonald officiating. Memorial donations can be made to Palliative Care Strait Richmond Hospital. 3. I have been reading this book completely enthralled. Can't wait for Book 2. However, while most places I know of, there are others I can't place. Is there a map that someone knows of that would possibly have the old names and new names side by side? Also, the old St. Peter's highway. My wife's family still has some land in Ben Eoin where you can see the old unpaved highway. Is there a map of where the road went? Also, in looking for maps on the internet, found a lot of pictures of the old railway stations in CB. http://novascotiarailwayheritage.com/photos.htm#FRENCH%20VILLAGE Although this shows French Village outside Halifax, it will take you to Cape Breton by links. All the best, Nigel P. Service
