    1. [NS-CB] Obituaries from the Sydney Post Record or Cape Breton Post
    2. Folks I have discovered online a spreadsheet headed "Obituaries from the Sydney Post Record 1933-1956", and have a query about on of the persons listed thereon. I am interested to know more about Peter GASKELL, who died aged 81 on 8 August 1952. The remarks column states "C.B.Post 9 Aug. 1952 pg. 13, b. England to G.B.1907". I assume that this is suggesting that an obituary appeared on page 13 of the Cape Breton Post of 9 August 1952. I believe that the "GB" referred to is Glebe Bay. I understand that in order to access or obtain a copy of the said obituary, I would have to approach the Cape Breton University Library or the McConnell Library in Sydney. However, before contacting these repositories, I was wondering if any lister might have a copy of the obituary in question ? Thanks in anticipation of your help. Paul

    1. [NS-CB] The diary of Nehemiah Martell revealed interesting family history
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. updated at 11:47 PM on 01/03/09 The diary of Nehemiah Martell revealed interesting family history LEROY PEACH The Cape Breton Post Over the years, I've pretty well figured out how I fit into a Martell clan whose head was Charles Martell (1733-1819), of Main-a-dieu. Only last week, however, I was organizing my genealogical files and I came upon excerpts from the diary of Nehemiah Martell. It had been in the possession of Cape Breton poet Helen MacDonald of Catalone. Nehemiah's brief and scattered entries spanned the years 1862 to 1869 and whetted my appetite to learn more about him and so I repaired to Cape Breton University's wonderful Beaton Institute. I found that Nehemiah Martell was born in 1843, the son of Charles Martell and Flora MacCuish. His grandfather was Joseph Martell (b. 1775), the son of the famous Charles Martell, esquire - soldier, teacher, lay reader, justice of the peace. Nehemiah's grandmother was Patience Phipps. Joseph Martell was the brother of Anthony Martell (b. 1782) from whom my mother's family descended. Charles and Anthony Martell lived in Mira Gut, in a large acreage on the Catalone side. By 1836, all the Mira Martells became Baptists. The Maritime Baptist claimed in 1906 that they broke away from the "rigid Episcopalians" because "the New Testamount had revealed until them a more perfect way." Nehemiah Martell began his diary when he was 19. Several entries show how Cape Breton's industrial scene was changing. On Oct. 22, 1864, he says that, "Railway surveyors are plentiful around here. The line is about half done." The line certainly pre-dated the S and L. On Sept. 18, 1866, he says, "America and Europe have had a summer of great excitement. They have been joined together by the electric telegraph, The Great Eastern. They now can converse, although it is expensive, $5 a word." On June 15, 1867, he reported that "A stranger has appeared in the Mira River in the shape of a small steamer, the first steam vessel in Mira Bay." On Feb. 17, 1869, he wrote: "A novel and unexpected sight appeared in the Mira Bay today. Three steamers are engaged in the laying of the telegraph cable from Brest to BostonŠ" He also talks of a tragedy, one which illustrates the isolation of Cape Breton and other places at the time. On May 17, 1865, he writes: "A time of deep trouble for the United States. President Lincoln has been shot by an assassin. Every loyal heart mourns this good man's death." Note that President Lincoln had been shot 29 days earlier on Apr. 15, 1865! Nehemiah Martell's diary ends on Sept. 19, 1869. He sailed for Boston on Sept. 7. Fog and poor winds meant that it took the schooner five days to reach Canso. On Sept. 17, he reached Boston. In Boston, he worked for $2 a day and his board was $5 a week. He never returned to Mira, although he longed for it. On Sept. 19, he said: "I went to the Baptist meeting hall this morning. I would give much to be with my friends in my own old house of worship in Mira." That derelict meeting house is still standing on Horne's Road. Near the end of 1869, Nehemiah was swept overboard from a vessel in Halifax Harbour. The details of his drowning are unknown. Only a few scraps of his life story remain. 1. [NS-CB] JANE RE your McCuspics in Prebyterian Witness
    2. Jane Nicholson
    3. Hi Margaret.... I have found TEN mentions of them for you (if you have not already received from someone else) in the PW Volume 3 - 1888-1908. They are: death of Dan - 1908 marriage of Donald to Maggie McLeod 1908 marriage of M. A. to Kate McDougall 1908 marriage of Mary to Daniel McAskill 1899 marriage of Murdoch to Barbara McPherson 1903 death of Mrs. Neil (twice) 1908 death of Mrs. Norman 1908 marriage of Christina to William B. Pullen 1893 death of Mrs. John MacIntosh (she was daughter of late Donald McCuspic) Her name is not given, just that she was daughter of. She died in 1907 in Watertown, Mass. Nothing in spelling MacUspie or McUspie, BUT Norman Macuspic of West Bay married to Hannah Campbell of Loch Lomond 1897 and I suspect that it would be Hannah Campbell who is the Mrs. Norman under a different spelling who died in 1908, above. All West Bay people. There at TWO mentions under McCuspic in the PW volume 1848-1887. marriage of some McCuspic (no first name given) to Agnes Campbell 1885 marriage of Margaret to Donald McLeod 1882 I have not been following your line, so don't know if some or any of these people are of interest to you, so am not going to type out all their stuff. You let me know off line who you need and I will get the information to you. Cheers. 3. Hi Bob Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, just got home. As far as I know, they must use the same index. When I was looking for the family, I wanted and they were in Sydney of all places (more pages), I couldn't find them through the archives or ancestry indexes, and it took a page by page search to finally find them. We are all human so errors are going to be made. I did find page 58 though, its appears along with page 53. Your Gillis wasn't on it though. You really have to watch the page numbers, as I noticed if a family continues on the following page, the surname wasn't always included with the first name at the top of page. No I didn't go through the microfilm. I use either ancestry or LAC. You did better than I did, I think LAC this morning had a real case of the hiccups as it wanted to give me everyone in CapeBreton County, no matter what, I did for a search. Since the pages are out of numerical order on the microfilm, the two consecutive page scans from the microfilm will duplicate this situation. I have seen instances were individuals are enumerated in two different polling districts for the same year. So they were present in place A when its enumerator arrived and were present in place B when its enumerator arrived. Perhaps the Alex Gillis family moved around alot and as such had left one home before the enumerator arrived and took up residence in a home already enumerated. -- Ron

Juanita, did you go through a microfilm of the 1891 Census for Glace Bay subdistrict ? I just tried to select the Glace Bay subdistrict and it returned 672 names for all of Cape Breton District. bob gillis

    3. Hi Bob; I decided to do some checking, after noting that you have not found Alex Gillis in either 1881 or 1891, in the GlaceBay district. Another possible explanation is not that the enumerator missed them, but Archives Canada missed posting the page. I have notified them that page 58 for Glace Bay which has the name Gillis on it does not appear for the 1891 census. I can't tell you how many Gillis are on that page, but it is obvious to me, the archives must have the page somewhere, as they listed a Gillis, Dan, as being on it. There maybe other pages missed also in various districts. I don't know. Please note that when checking the images, two pages appear. Check that the pages are consecutive, if not notify the archives that the image is missing or have attached the entry to a wrong image. It is very simple to do as they have 'suggest correction' on the item display page for any name. It doesn't find your Gillis, but it could explain why you can't find them. 3. Hi Paul; No there isn't many messages, on this site. Like any mailing list you will find those who are helpful, and I thought Greg Matthews posts seem to be. I tried a number of his hints. They work ... but ... in genealogy, it still takes a lot of know how, a lot of patience, and an awlful lot of luck, to gather up those stray leaves that have blown off the tree and scattered in the wind. Happy hunting and may we all have the 'luck of the Irish' at least once in awhile. 1. [NS-CB] Some helpful hints: Google searches for genealogy
    2. Juanita MacDonald
    3. Hi; I came across something interesting today. Up till now I didn't realize that there was a mailing list for google. This posting I think will be quite useful to narrow down the number of hits we get in genealogy, using the google search engine. Happy hunting Juanita MacDonald http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Internet_Help/GOOGLE.html From: "Greg Matthews" < dialzero@bellsouth.net> Subject: [GOOGLE] How to use Google to create powerful genealogy searches Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2007 01:39:15 -0400 I was really glad to see this list appear in this week's Rootweb Review. I know a lot of people have no idea of the power of google search techniques. A while back I started my own list of helpful google operators with examples of them. So, to hopefully get this list started I thought I would share them. Feel free to cross-post this to other lists if you like. You go to google and type the commands into the search box to use them. Alternately, if you have the google toolbar you can type the commands in the toolbox search box. 1) How to search for sites that link back to another site: example: Let's say you've found a great web site for your Smythe family research. Let's say that site is called www.smythefamily.com. There might be other people out there who also like that site and have linked back to it, and maybe you've never seen that other site. The command to find that other site is: link:www.smythe.com This will give you a list of any sites that google has indexed that link to www.smythe.com. 2) How to search for sites that are similar to another site: This technique is the same as if you clicked the "Similar pages" link on a list of returned results from a standard google search. What it will do is show you sites that cover material that is similar to the site you are interested in. For the example I'll use my own Mat(t)hews genealogy site: related:www.bluntrazor.com If you used this command you would get a short list of sites that google says are related to or similar to my site. 3) How to restrict a google search to a single web site or domain: We all use google or similar search pages to find things related to our genealogy research, but how often do we get TONS and TONS of results that are of no interest to us? A lot. Wouldn't it be really useful if you could restrict a search to a single web site? Let's say you only want to search rootsweb (sure they have search links for everything, but I don't think they have a single search to look at everything at once) or you only want to search the forums at genealogy.com. There are several different ways to search for different things so I'll show all the ones that come to mind with examples for each: The first again uses my web site to search for the surname "Pace": site:bluntrazor.com Pace The search returns 11 results and the search box on my site returns 12 so google does pretty good with that one (always remember that google can only return results for pages that it has indexed and there is no guarantee that it has indexed every single page on a web site.) Let's take that a little further and search for a man named Thomas Pace. Most people would put Thomas Pace in quote marks " " and you can certainly do that with your search, eg. site:bluntrazor.com "Thomas Pace", but I find it easier to use a google shortcut: site:bluntrazor.com Thomas.Pace Saves us a keystroke doing that. I find this search method really helpful when searching the forums at genealogy.com since they don't seem to have a global forum search. To use the command there you would do this: site:genforum.genealogy.com Thomas.Pace This turns up results for Thomas Pace on boards other than the Pace family forum. Keep in mind that this search will only return results for "Thomas Pace" together and not "Thomas or Pace" seperately. I've found that in general google does NOT have all of the genforums indexed, but you should get results from different forums that will hopefully give you an idea of some new places to look. What if you wanted to search for more than one surname from a single site? To do that we use what is called the "pipe" character: | . This key will be found most likely above your ENTER key. To search for two different names, eg. Isaac OR James from my site you would use: site:bluntrazor.com Isaac | James (alternately you could do site:bluntrazor.com Isaac OR James but the "OR" must be capitalized) this gives us a list of pages where EITHER of those names appear. Finally, if you want pages that include both Isaac and James on the same page, but not together (not as a single name "Isaac James") you would do: site:bluntrazor.com Isaac and James For some reason google tells me I don't need to use the word and, but I always get fewer results if I don't use it. 4) How to get results from pages with a specific name in the web site title: When I first saw this operator I was a little sceptical of it's usefulness, but when I used it I was surprised. A web page's title is the text you find at the top of your browser in the blue bar. I think part of the usefulness of this method is that it is a way to further narrow down a search. Let's say you were looking for pages on Charles City County (Virginia). If you just googled Charles City county you get over a half million results, but if you set the search to only those pages with Charles City County in the title of the page it cuts that number down to just over 5,000 (still a lot, but better than a half million). To use this technique you do this: intitle:Charles.City.County Returns from the above are going to have Charles City County in that exact order in the title (see below if you don't want the words necessarily in that order) If you were searching for a very unique surname this could prove helpful: intitle:Blackwelder Blackwelder is my mother's maiden name and everyone with the surname is related without question. Remember, any words put into a web page's title are going to be important as the site is generally specifically about whatever the title says. If you wanted Charles City County to appear in the title, but not necessarily in that order you would do this: allintitle:Charles City County allintitle will catch variations such as a web page title "County of Charles City". Curiously, allintitle only returns 505 results versus the broader intitle:Charles.City.County which gives 5,000 results. So, it pays to try it both ways. 5) How to get results from pages with a specific name in the web site url (address): This one might seem like it's splitting hairs with intitle, but I always get interesting results when I use it. Again, let's say we are looking for Charles City County. To search for sites that have that county in the ADDRESS of the web site we use: inurl:Charles.City.County Again, this gives returns with the exact phrase Charles City County. I just used this one and found a site I had not come across before on 17th century Charles City County that did not appear when used the intitle command on it. Alternately you could use: allinurl: Charles City County to get addresses that don't have the words necessarily in that exact order. Another method with this operator is: inurl:Blackwelder Isaac which returns results that have "Blackwelder" in the url and "Isaac" somewhere in the web page (NOT in the url). 6) How to mix operators It is possible to mix any of the above operators, but generally I don't as I find I get decent results without having to do that. But, let's say you wanted to search only a specific site for Blackwelder in the title of any of the web pages: intitle:Blackwelder site:edu This will returns results with sites that have Blackwelder in the title of the web page, _BUT_ it will only search web sites that end in .edu (this would be colleges and other schools, no .com or .org or dot anything else but .edu). I'm not sure why you'd want to do this with a genealogy search, but if you do that's how it's done. Other combinations using any of the above are possible also. Believe it or not, I learned the majority of this by watching a video of a college kid on youtube showing how to illegally download music from google :) Good luck to all with your searches. I have been pleasantly surprised with a lot of the results I've gotten using these techniques and I know you will be also. Greg Matthews
