In the marriage register she was age 22 so born in 1905-1906. There is a delayed birth registration applied for by herself that give her birth date as 25Sep 1905. Her father is given in the birth record as Ronald MacDonald and in the marriage record as Donald A McDonald and Mary Campbell. The only marriage between a Ronald A D McDonald and Mary J Campbell is in 1917 - Book: 24 - Page: 51 - Number: and all the image shows is a front page of a marriage license 21051 dated 22 Aug 1917. Can I assume that her parents were not married until 15 years after her birth? A least one record has the father's name as Ranald and as one of her sons was so named I guess that was the actual spelling bob gillis

In 1961, he was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada. His first pastoral charge was West Bay, NS. After completing his Ph.D. in Church History at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, he returned with his young family to join the faculty at Pine Hill Divinity Hall in 1967. His association with the school, which became part of the Atlantic School of Theology, continued for 33 years, and saw him take on a variety of roles and challenges there. During that time, he also served for five years as minister for St. Andrew's United Church in Halifax. Too young to retire at 60, he moved west to occupy the office of the Dean of Theology at the University of Winnipeg until 2005. After retireing, he continued to contribute to the community. The peace movement was especially important to him among the many social issues that drew his attention and energy. His passion for life manifested itself in his zeal for lively debate, his habit of staying in motion, his curiosity about people and his delight in their diversity. He enjoyed the feel of a fountain pen on paper, the taste of single malt scotch, the sound of Leonard Cohen's songs, and the sight of the highlands of Cape Breton. The obits are received the day before publication. "As for Glace Bay at Carbonear, Newfoundland, Canada" Glace Bay is still on Cape Breton, and hasn't drifted away on the ice, and become stuck at Carbonear, Nfld. Don't worry Margaret you aren't losing it, any more than we lost Glace Bay. MacLeod from Louisbourg There is no marriage of a *keigan to a Hunt in the 194 marriages or a *gan to a Hunt in the 368 marriages in CBC in NSHVS. The only 1950 death I find is MacKeigan, John Louisburg, Cape Breton County. I do find MacKeigan, Neil Alexander Glace Bay, Cape Breton County 1952. Yes his wife's name is recored as Bessie and this is the only marriage searching on *keigan and *alex* that fits him is: McKeigan, Alexander Ferguson, Jessie May Cape Breton County 1921. there is no marriage for a *neil* *alex* *keigan in any NS county. I see this somewhat duplicates Ron McDougall's info. I will respond to his message in another reply.
Dear List, Is it just me or has anyone else been perplexed about the publication of obits in the actual Cape Breton Post versus what we get online. Case in point, please check March 4, 2009 for Joyce Parsons. I believe the newspaper is bringing the born date under the name of the deceased. Then it is republished. In this case, Carbonear is listed but the late Joyce Parsons died in Glace Bay, N.S. Are there any clear guidelines as to how the Cape Breton Post is publishing these obits in their new format? My comment in no way reflects upon the excellent work done by Carol MacLean in publishing for us. Some days, I think I am losing it (LOL), so would someone kindly clarify my sanity in this matter. Have a great day. Cheers, Margaret
Hi Lark; What source lead you to come up with Elizabeth Hunt [aka Bessie Hunt] being the spouce of Neil McKeigan? "Neil Alexander MacKeigan* b. ca. 1902 d. 1950 [note possible error Neil b. Apr 25, 1903, d. Aug 7, 1952]] was brought up by his grand parents, m. Elizabeth Hunt d/o Charles Hunt and Flora Gillis of Louisbourg" I have to go out but will dig around when I get back. I just learned of the Hunt connection this year when I found Florence Gillis' birth in NSHVS Two of Kenneth and Florence Gillis' sons stayed in CB: Alex and Angus who married Elizabeth McKinnon, a Catholic, and was disowned or shunned by the rest of the family. My father knew his name but nothing about what happened to him. Juanita kindly give me lots of info on him and his family. The third son, my grandfather Neil Harry went from CB to Cambridge MA via Toronto. He was a mate on a Great Lakes vessel before 1880 when he immigrated into the USA though Buffalo. There were 3 girls: Christina married Alex Finley a sergeant ( US spelling) in the British Medical Corps and moved to England. (I now correspond with her granddaughter who lives in New Zealand);,Margaret moved to Cambridge and married had two children and died there; Sarah moved to Cambridge and died there unmarried. bob gillis
Hi Ron; I wouldn't say you threw a kink in it. Its more like you opened a door and let a little fresh in for Bob. I noticed as I searched the archives, that Bob's 1st posting for this family was back I believe sometime in 2004. I would say you are right on the money, with this family. Lark seems to agree also that it is the "NEIL MACKEIGAN" we are looking for and I know Lark has done a lot of research on the "MacKeigans". Seward T. Hunt's wife Dolly d. Jan 30 1988. buried Riverview Cemetery. On the off chance there might be other members of Seward's family buried there, I used his sister Gladys name, and there was a woman named "Gladys Winnifred McCall b. 1915-1973, married to Rev. So hopefully some kind soul with a few minutes to spare, will do the look up for you and Bob. Or you can write directly to the Halifax Herald, the Beaton [UCB], or NS archives for a copy of the obit.
