I wonder is Marilyn MacDonald still around who had old postings about MacLean in Marion Bridge (especially a Laughlin she was asking about). Her old email is out of use. Actually anyone with info on that line might help -- Colin Waye
Hello List, Does anyone know of any small, family burial grounds in the Big Glace Bay Lake-Marconia Towers area where early Scottish Presbyterians might have been buried, say 1840-1880 period? Perhaps people who hunt, or have walked over the land in that area, might have come across something or might have heard old stories about cemeteries in the area. In particular I am looking for one where the Roderick MacLellan family might be buried, also Martins who lived on Cow Bay Road between Port Morien and Birch Grove. Thanks, George

Hi Arlene; There were two children, Winnie & Nellie [no surname given which is indicated by a stroke] age 1,b. N.S., living in the 'Infant home' run by Bessie J McKeen & her sister Christiana MacDonald in Halifax on the 1891 census. It is unkn where either of their parents were born. There was no indication that these two children were twins, as Winnie's religion was listed as Presb. and Neillie's was Baptist. Makes you wonder if they were just abandoned on the doorstep? The 1891 census page is 11, dist # 33 Halifax City ward 1d. There was no search results to show any twin sisters by the name of Winnie & Nellie (also various spellings) under the name Sutherland, Cameron or Mac/Mc Donald. If the children in fact were born after 1891, than they would not appear until the 1901 census and if I am reading correctly you have them on the 1901 in CapeBreton. (?) In which case, if they were born in Halifax and in a home for 'unwed mothers' you would need to discover which home it was. If they were wards of the court, than there should be some record of their existence in Halifax from the time of their birth to their adoption and coming to Cape Breton. As for a 'Home' girl being from Halifax, most definitely. A 'Home' is a shelter for the care of orphaned, needy, and the infirmed besides all the other meanings we apply to the word 'home'. Cape Breton Post 11/01/09 Snowstorms are not as severe as they were years ago LEROY PEACH The Cape Breton Post Despite the technology available to forecasters, our weather will always surprise. Even Canada's top meteorologist, David Phillips, will only say that the weather here this winter will fluctuate, and it has. On the other hand, the Farmer's Almanac promises severe cold. Imagine how winter was for Cape Bretoners in the 19th and 20th centuries, however, with primitive forecasting and the absence of equipment to deal with severe storms. I recall the Christmas Eve blizzard of 1947 when pan shovels became more effective than plows. I've done research on the reports of early missionaries to their superiors in the 19th century. At that time, one of the greatest perils was the weather. In 1856, for instance, a severe winter storm, the worst since 1840, blocked roads for the season. Two young boys froze to death near Louisbourg. The Anglican missionary William Young Porter took 16 hours to travel from Sydney to Louisbourg, where he was stranded from Sunday to the following Friday. It took him eight hours to get to Mira Ferry, a distance of 12 miles. The Reverend Charles Croucher (1869-1882), a resident of Port Morien, wrote often of adverse weather conditions. On Jan. 9, 1875, he stated that it took him 10 hours (including rests) to travel 16 miles. He had to free the snow from around the horse and draw the sleigh one-half a mile by hand, with the horse following and plunging through as best he could. One Sunday in the winter of 1878, he missed church for the first time in his tenure. He started out for St. Luke's, in Big Glace Bay, but he was only able to travel 200 yards through snowdrifts before he had to turn back. It took him an hour to return to his house. The storm along the coast in the area now called Long Beach swept away part of the road and covered the area with seawater to a depth of several feet. Fast forward to the 20th century. I recall snow on snow in the 1940s, with inadequate equipment to move it. On Jan. 26, 1965, the Cape Breton Post reported a fierce snowstorm which hit Cape Breton the day before. It stated that "Harry Hitchens, 72, director of the Donkin Band and one of the province's finest musicians collapsed and died while fighting snowdrifts near his home." Mr. Hitchens had abandoned his car and set out on foot through the drifts. The snow began at 8 a.m. Clergy and citizens had gathered in Port Morien for the ordination of Reverend Charles Ellis to the priesthood at St. Paul's Anglican Church. Snow, driven by a 48-mile-an-hour wind, continued to fall all day Monday. By midnight, 40 centimetres had fallen and some of the drifts were 10 feet high. One parishioner's car plunged into a deep ditch on the turn to the church. Following the service, eight clergy were storm-stayed for two days. If my memory is correct, you could look forward to lots of snow in winter years ago. That seems to have been the case in much earlier times, too. Today, however, forecasters do a better job of predicting it and plows a better job of removing it. LeRoy Peach lives in Port Morien and may be reached at leroy_peach@yahoo.ca. Cape Breton Post 09/03/09 Columnist receives more insight into the life of Nehemiah Martell LEROY PEACH The Cape Breton Post When I wrote my piece last week on Nehemiah Martell, (1847-1875) I was hoping to learn more. My wish was granted. Not only did Wayne MacVicar, who knows the Martell clan far better than I do, supply me with new information, he also corrected some of the information that I had included. For example, Nehemiah Martell (b. 1847) did not drown in Halifax Harbour in December, 1869. He drowned sailing in the Bay of Fundy in 1875. As Stephen Vincent Benet has said, "Truth is a hard deer to hunt." Wayne MacVicar, however, has cornered much of the truth on Nehemiah Martell and for good reasons: he is a closer relative than I am and he has valuable material about his grand uncle even if it only opens the ancestral door a small amount. Nehemiah was Wayne's great-grandmother Emma's brother. Emma married John Wesley Nicoll, one of the founders of the Phillips and Nicoll Company. They operated steam ferries on the Mira River. Wayne says that Emma and the rest of her family lived on the north side of Mira Gut, where the Martell house still stands. I knew that the original Charles Martell had land grants in Main-a-dieu and on the south side of Mira Gut. Joseph Martell, his son, lived on the south side as well, but Joseph acquired a grant of land on the north side in 1803 and his son Charles, the father Nehemiah and Emma, built a house and farmed there. Nehemiah returned from the Boston States in 1870 and worked at a lumber mill in Salmon River. It was there that he wrote a series of letters to Emma, letters which I will discuss at a later date. He spent some time going to school in Pugwash and may have studied seamanship. His great-grandfather Charles Martell taught seamanship from his own home in Main-a-dieu in the late 1700s and many of his descendants became seafarers as well as captains of schooners and brigantines. More than one was lost at sea. It appears that in 1871 and 1872, Nehemiah went to sea. He was part owner of a schooner, the Sylvan, with his brother Joseph Anthony. It was built by Phillip Spencer and Nehemiah's father, Charles. He spent some time, as well, on the brigantine Alice Starrat in 1874. The two-masted schooner, Sylvan, had a gross tonnage of 61 tons and was employed as a cargo ship, transporting coal primarily from Cowbay (Port Morien), likely from the Gowrie Mine, to Lynne, MA. Two logbooks relating to shipping survive. In Nov. 1875, we find Nehemiah in Boston. He indicated in a letter to his sister Emma that he was leaving for home. However, he was washed overboard in a storm on the Bay of Fundy on Nov. 22. His sister Emma wrote: "God seems to be dealing very hard with us. Our family circle is growing smaller and smaller. Nehemiah was a kind and good brother." Then she adds this poem: "If life be not in length of days/In silvery locks or furrowed brow/But living to the Saviour's praise/How few have lived as long as thou." Nehemiah's brother, Joseph A., was also lost at sea and a monument was erected in their memory in the Mira Bay Baptist Cemetery. Hello Bob; It is never wise to 'assume' something in genealogy, because 9 times out of 10, someone will come along and blew it out of the water. If you plan on leaving a family history for your children, grandchildren, or just your family in general, make it the best you can. For someone some day will follow your footsteps and be lead astray with assumptions. They have a habit of becoming erroneous facts overtime. It can take years to unravel, especially when so many just take and include it in their work, to perpetuate it. My answer to your question than "Can I assume that her parents were not married until 15 years after her birth?" is a most definite "NO!" Once you check these records out, you will discover, that the "Clue" to who the family was, is contained in Dolena Evelyn MacDonald, late birth registration. Your Dolena Evelyn MacDonald, who married James Charles Hunt, was the daugther of a former POLICE CHIEF OF SYDNEY, RONALD ALLAN MACDONALD. Dolena's family can be found on the 1911 census for "32 Sydney, p. 31, family 262. She was listed by her 2nd name of "EVELYN" and her father was listed as "ROLAND" on the census. At that time her father was a Policeman, but at the time of her birth as well as her br. Rodk's birth, June 22, 1907 and at the time of his marriage he had been a carpenter. Note her father's name appears as "Roland" on the 1911 census, & on other documents as "Ronald A" "Ranald A" and even "Donald A" per the extract on Dolena's marriage extract [obviously an error] use for late birth reg. and the "A" in his name stands for Allan. Hi All, I am still picking away at my brick wall. I am putting some names out there to see if they ring a bell with anyone or if anyone has them in their tree. I also have questions I hope someone can answer . First : I have a great grandmother Nellie Sutherland who was brought up in Louisburg with Murdock David (son of Angus and Sarah) and Florah ( dau of Norman and Jessie Beaton) Cameron . Nellie claimed to be a home child .Her obit states the same .She died in Jan. of 1964 . But nothing shows up on her as a home child. I also cannot find out anything from local historians in Louisburg on the Cameron's. Nellie also had a twin sister Winifred who was placed with the Cameron's. It is like Winifred never existed. Nellie's children where taken by Children's Aid in Oct. 1933 and placed in Bairncroft . We just received what little Children's Aid had on the family. It states that Nellie Cameron Sutherland was a home girl from Halifax and she was 39 years old in 1933 when she lost the children. Other facts on Nellie: She was never married to her children's father(s??) She lived with Malcolm MacDonald on Alexandria Street and also in New Boston. She worked at a restaurant on Charlotte Street Sydney. Different birth dates from 1885-1894. The 1901 census states she was born in N.S. She was a twin and gave birth to twins. The Children's Aid file also states that Nellie lived with Hugh Morrison in Hillside Mira for 17 years and they had 6 children . The file mentions that Hugh's wife lived in Western Canada with her children . Hugh married in Jan of 1891 Sarah (MacKeigan) MacLellan widow of Archie MacLellan . Sarah and Archie had 3 boys ,Alex and Dan born 1881- twins and John born in 1883. Hugh and Sarah had one daughter Mary in Dec of 1891 . In 1901 Hugh, Sarah and their children are living in Sydney. In 1911 Hugh in back in Hillside Mira with his elderly parent's, no wife or daughter. We didn't have any idea what happened to Sarah and Mary till now. Sarah's parent's were John and Christy MacKeigan. Archie MacLellan's parent's were Alexander and Jessie MacLellan from Mira Big Ridge. Hugh Morrison's parent's were Ewen and Jessie (MacDonald ) Morrison . I need a fresh perspective. First what do you make of a "Home girl from Halifax" ? Do you think she was an orphan ? Or were the twins illegitimate and the facts about their birth hidden? I think Sutherland was probably their real surname .Does anyone with knowledge of Sutherland's have a birth or history of twin births between 1885 -1894? Does anyone know of any connections or marriages between the Cameron's ,MacDonald's ,Sutherland's that can account for Nellie and Winifred? In the 1881 census there are two Sutherland girls in Gabarus with the same birth year. There Mom was widowed . I wondered about them just because of the possibility they were twins and there were many family connections between Gabarus and Louisburg . I also was wondering , does anyone know or have information in there tree on what happened to Sarah MacKeigan MacLellan Morrison and her sons Dan ,Alex and John and her and Hugh's daughter Mary? Did they go to Western Canada as the Children's Aid records suggest. I also was wondering if anyone knew how to or where could you search family court records? Or magistrate record 's for Cape Breton County? Thank you all for your time, Arlene _________________________________________________________________ Share photos with friends on Windows Live Messenger http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9650734

Congratulations Lark, As family historians we can appreciate the work involved in such a project. The putting down of the pen (so to speak) and the feeling of accomplishment is like no other for genealogists of that I am sure. Once again ..Congratulations! Hello all, Just want to advise everyone that I finally finished the MacKeigan book after 10 years of research. I would also like to take a minute to thank everyone who had donated family information. Everyone who seen the book up to now had nothing but praise for the work that went into it. Taken from the introduction by Judy B. Cluett Those of us who are descendants of the those early pioneers to Cape Breton have been the recipients of a wondrous legacy forged by the blood, sweat, tears, sorrows and joys of our ancestors. We are who we are, in part, because of their efforts to create better lives for their children and the generations to come. Their faith, mingled with their desire for education has led many of us to become lawyers, doctors, teachers, nurses, and other leaders of the communities in which we live. We have become responsible citizens of our communities and have taught our children to carry on this legacy. It is to those first MacKeigan settlers that this book is dedicated. We have not forgotten the roots from which we have come, and we leave this book to the generations to follow, so that they may know and appreciate those who have gone before. The information presented here represents years of work by many, many people. We want to thank every person who has contributed information on a family line; we want to thank the folks who have so kindly shared with us records they have found for us, often in searches connected to other families not necessarily related. Thank you, too, for all of the resources that were contributed by families in the past, to the Beaton Institute. Thank you to the ³neighbours² of MacKeigan families who have shared stories and interesting incidents and who have made it possible for us to ³know² our families a little better. And finally, a big thank you to Lark Szick, for the hours and hours of emails, phone calls, research and overall work in putting this book together. Without you, Lark, this book would not have been possible. A last note: To those of you who may have questions about accuracy, this book has not been written hastily. Over a period longer than ten years, Lark and I have been in correspondence with people in the Hebrides to help verify our information from records there, and we have been in contact with MacKeigan families throughout North America. We have tried to put down everything as it was told to us and as much as possible, you will find things documented in the back of the book. Yet, it is possible that you may find something with which you disagree, and if that is so, please remember that genealogy is almost always ³a work in progress². The book is 138 pages, has lots of photos, maps, a section dedicated to their forefathers in Scotland and lots of info on the Cape Breton side.

Hello Kevin; I don't have a Ropek in my data base, but I do have DELANEY. Though you don't appear to have a direct line to the Delaneys, I thought it was very nice of you to include your nephews & niece's maternal ancestral line. My mother-in-law would be one of their oldest living relatives of the Delaneys. She'll be 94 this year. Her paternal ancestral line is MarieEdna/Marcellin P./Patrice/Daniel/Patrick Delaney. She is related to them 10 times over through various family lines, with the closest relationship being 3rd cousin twice removed, and the farthest kinship being 10th cousin once removed. Hopefully one day they to will take an interest in genealogical research as you have appeared to have done, for they will find a rich and varied history in their Irish/French connections.
