Dorothy (Cozzolino) Brennan Born: March 20th, 1924 Passed on: August 8th, 2013 It is with great sadness that we commend our mother, Dorothy Cecilia Brennan to the arms of The Lord. 'Dottie' was predeceased by her parents, James and Regina Cozzolino (who died during childbirth) and her dear brother, Tommy Cozzolino, who died in the Second World War. In her teenage years she lived with her cousins, "The Burkes" and grandparents, in their Sydney home. Dottie attended Mt. St. Bernard in Antigonish and obtained a secretarial science diploma which served her well later in life; with Boland's, National Sea Products and Dalhousie School of Architecture. In 1949, Dottie married John Brennan and settled in North Sydney to raise a family of six children. Our mother's capacity to give was endless. Her playful personality, generous smile and quick wit made her both interesting and enjoyable. With a station wagon full of (six) kids, she was never too busy to add their friends, for camping, skating or any other activity including formal and informal roles in Brownies, Scouts, music festivals, sailing and any other event that her children were involved in. Always an outdoor adventurer (hiking, camping, skiing) Dottie and regatta shipmates Jean Mclean, Hilda Tremblett and Mary Astephen were undaunted and known for bringing home the silver in all types of weather. She continued to skate, golf and bowl well into her 80s. Dottie leaves behind her six children, John (Helen), Jeannie (John), Tom (Brenda), Terry (Marilee), Jim (Linda), Pat (Stephanie); 11 grandchildren, Ishmael (Ann-Marie), Jude (Taryn), Miriah, Brittany, Talia, Colin, Johnny, Alanna, Cameron, Chloe and Elise. Dottie always carried a little sadness in her heart for the loss of her brother (who lied about his age to fight for Canada) and a life without her mother. We are comforted in knowing that she will now share their embrace that she has so long waited for. For their kindness and care, the family is thankful to Melville Heights and Gardens, Lynn Fitzgerald and compassionate staff of Halifax Infirmary unit 8.4. A celebration of our mother's life took place on Aug. 10 at Saint Michael's Catholic Church, Halifax, N.S. As per her wishes, Dottie's ashes rest alongside her mother in Cape Breton. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.coleharbourfuneral.com.

He spent his last moments at home, surrounded by his wife, family and friends. Born in Sydney on Nov. 8, 1957, Alex was the son of Annie Mae Fitzgerald, and stepson of the late Winston 'Scotty' Fitzgerald. Alex was an ordinary guy who was extraordinary to everyone who knew him. He had a strong mind and a tender heart, and he enjoyed putting a smile on the faces of those he loved. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, day or night, rain or shine. A true Jack of all trades, Alex was a meticulous worker who tackled every project he encountered with precision and pride. He spent many years fishing and went on to be a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 955, and Labourers International Local 1115. At the time of his illness, he was working for Graham Construction in Alberta. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (LeBlanc), whom he always called "Sweetheart"; his stepchildren, Jeff and Kristen (Mike), North Sydney; his foster daughter, Chrissy (Curtis), Florence and four grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Darren, Marley, Bailee and Michael. Sandra was born April 12, 1952, to the late Sarah (Wrathall) and Francis MacAdam. She was the second child in a brood of seven. She was a proud Mira Roader and even prouder Cape Bretoner. Her career was spent working at the Sterile Supplies Unit (SPD) at Sydney City Hospital and retiring from New Waterford Hospital in 2010. Elsie McKinnon Born In: Sydney Born: August 27th, 1945 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: August 10th, 2013 On Saturday Aug. 10, 2013, Elsie passed away and flew to God as the Angel she was. Born in Sydney on Aug. 27, 1945, Elsie was the daughter of the late Alexander and Sofia (Bernasky) McKinnon. Elsie is survived by her son, David (Heather); grandchildren, Michael (Jenna), Mitchell (Amanda) and Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Aubrey; brothers, John (Joan), Alex (Winniefred) and Michael (Wanda); and sisters, Sophie (Walter) Rice, Florence (Rene) Legault and Diana (Patrick McKay). Besides her parents, Elsie was predeceased by her sister in infancy, Cecelia and great friends, Patricia and Mary. Elsie was a kind and gentle soul who prided herself in family. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren whom she would do anything for. Elsie always had time for her great-grandson, Jacob who proudly called her 'G-Ma' and she could be seen playing go fish or snakes and ladders or anything he wanted to do. Sadly, mom didn't get to hold her new great-grandchild, Aubrey but when a picture or a little video was shown her smile would light up the room. Mom enjoyed the company of many of her friends, especially her friends at the Griffin Street Seniors Complex where she resided up until last year when an illness caused her to have to move in with our family. There are many words that could be used to describe Mom but I choose to use 'Angel', she believed in the healing power of God which might explain why she overcame so many difficulties in life and beat so many illnesses. Sadly, what she used the most was her heart, which led to her passing. Mom was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and attended whenever her health allowed her to do, in her final days she would pray with the Chaplin at the Halifax Infirmary and would take Communion. I know for sure Mom is in Heaven with family and friends and will watch down over everyone, may you rest in peace Mom, we all love you! Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Elsie may be made to An Cala unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com. Am tracking down my gggrandmother's name and place of birth through the death certificates of those of her children who emigrated to the Boston area from NS in the late 19th century. In this one, her mother is given as Christy and her birthplace is given at this location. Should be somewhere in Inverness county. I suspect it is either near Mabou or Lake Ainslee or perhaps near Malagawatch or River Denys. The other two siblings' info is that her name before her marriage was Christine (or Christie) Campbell. The reference to Inverness county may be to where she lived as a child since the others' information placed her birth in Scotland. For sure, her husband, Donald M*clean, was born in Coll about 1814. Know that she died in Sydney before 1859, so can't get her name or additional info from NS vital records or from the early census records there which are listed in the husband's name. Any other info useful for getting info is appreciated. Have also already checked the McDougall book about Inverness county. Ardith

    3. This will end up being a complete boondoggle for Nova Scotia in particular - the names will be interpreted by people who have NO idea what the local names actually are - so they'll guess at them - then we'll have to try 10 different spellings in order to get all of the information.  It would have been SO much better to ask for volunteers to transcribe it as was done previously.   Lana "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much, it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." Mary Capstick Born In: Capstick Born: November 28th, 1921 Passed in: Capstick Passed on: August 7th, 2013 With sadness we announce the passing into eternity of Mary Euphemia Capstick on Aug. 7, 2013. at Richmond Villa, St. Peter's, N.S. Mary was born on Nov. 28, 1921, in Capstick, N.S., to the late Sarah (Brown) and John D. Capstick. She grew up in Capstick and attended a one room school there before going on to Normal College in Truro, N.S. After graduating from Normal College she taught school in Capstick, MacKinnon Harbor, Bras d'Or, and Halifax. From Halifax Mary moved to Toronto and a new career. She worked at IBM for 10 years and then she resumed her teaching career. During this period she attended Wilfrid Laurier University graduating from there in 1985. Her last years of teaching were in Bramalea and her specialty was kindergarten where she was revered and treasured by the many little ones who passed through her hands. At her 85th birthday celebration one of her former students, a news anchor on television in Toronto gave Mary a warm tribute on her evening news. Like many women of her generation her career was blessing the lives of her family and students through the endless love she gave them all. After her retirement she continued to live in Bramalea. She spent her time taking trips and going on cruises. She visited England, Scotland and Ireland. She loved card games, especially euchre and crossword puzzles. Each summer she was drawn back to her beloved Capstick and the house where she grew up. Our family have always called her "Mimi" after one of her nephews christened her "Mimi". She liked that name. Those of us who loved Mimi will remember her singing. She wrote songs that she sang with gusto and we all recall her singing "The Wild Colonial Boy" while waving her arms and stamping her feet. Mimi loved a party. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She is survived by one sister Dodie (John) and a nephew Danny MacNeil. Besides her parents Mary was predeceased by her brother Francis Leo in the Second World War, her sister Theresa and three beloved nephews, Frank, Johnny and Craig MacNeil. Our family chain is broken again and nothing seems the same, but God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Funeral and burial will be at a later date under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.

    3. Very interesting. Guess this is why we must check and report such errors. The census takers during those days certainly didn't realize the impact this would have down the road. Half of them could not spell and write clearly for sure. This might have been qualified material used to hire and pay these census takers. BTW, did they do it for free or did they get paid? He died peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013. Born in Sydney, Jan. 31, 1923, John was the son of the late Michael and Josephine (Lucas) Zahara. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. John was the son of Ukrainian immigrants and, like many other immigrants who settled the Whitney Pier community, he devoted years of his life to working at the Sydney Steel Plant; in his case 44 years as a supervisor in the blast furnace department. John lived his whole life in the Pier, and was well known as being naturally gifted in sports. He was scouted by the National Hockey League in his youth and was an avid baseball player and bowler. John also loved to play cards and he and his Lil hosted many enthusiastic tarabish games over the years. In his final years, John spent much of his time tuned in to the hockey and ball games and talking sports with family and friends. His sharp wit and sense of humour kept his spirit young. It was his gift to all who knew him and we will treasure it forever. Above all else, John was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to everyone he met. Left to mourn this great loss are his sons, Stewart (Barbara) Zahara and Dennis Zahara. Also surviving are his loving grandchildren, Stewart (Patricia), Karen (Will Petrac), Brent (Michelle), Carmie (Jody Harpell), John (Liliana), Cella, Lynn (David Lahey) and Tammy (Craig MacDonald); brother-in-law, Glen (Buddy) Young; as well as many nieces and nephews. William Taylor Born: June 12th, 1930 Passed in: Sydey Passed on: August 3rd, 2013 Another angel has received the honour of receiving the wings of glory, as the work he did here on earth is finished and he is now gone on to his rightful glory. William passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. William Thomson Taylor was born on June 12, 1930, to his proud parents, Margaret Joyce (MacCuish) Taylor and her husband, William Stanley Taylor. He was one of four children. William had an adventurous childhood, as he moved around to a few places and met many people who taught him various life skills, which he was able to use in his early years and, in his later years, gave him many rewards. William, also known to a few as T.T., had many other gifts that he shared with family and friends, as he had a very kind and peaceful soul, as well as a heart that was as big as the world and much love for all who knew and loved him dearly. For 43 years, William was employed with the City of Sydney (CBRM) and like many he worked with, started out doing pick and shovel. As a young man and after working as a labourer, William was successful in working himself up the scale, where he finally finished as a heavy equipment operator. Up until he took early retirement in 1991, due to his health, William took great pride in his job. He was able to enjoy his retirement by traveling to a few places. William entertained people by playing his accordion and his hearty laugh was one that was so contagious that one had to laugh with him. He loved taking pictures of anything that captured his attention. William had a great voice and truly enjoyed singing. Many commented on his singing, as at one time, he sang in the choir at Bethel Presbyterian Church and was a member of the young peoples group. He was also a member of the L.T.B.A. Lodge #202 in Sydney, where he held many offices. William was predeceased by his parents; many uncles and aunts; nephew, David, John's son; brother, John; sister, Joyce Taylor Crawley; and by many great friends he had known over the years. He is survived by his brother, Dan B. Taylor (Donald); many nieces, nephews and cousins; and also by his dear and true friend of 29 years, Edward MacPherson. William's wish was to be buried without any fancy funeral. He was a plain and simple person who was a "Plain Jane" as it were, but now and then, he would love to be in the spotlight and loved the attention it brought his way. There will be no visitation and interment will be held in the Garden of the Good Shepherd at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Benevolent Fund at Bethel Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice. I would like to thank each and every nurse and doctor who, so professionally, attended to William in his time of sickness, as well as his family doctor, Dr. Buhariwalla, who we consider a friend and his staff at the Pier Medical Clinic for the love they showed William. Also, to the many people who sent their love and well wishes for William through the internet and regular mail. To Margaret MacLeod for her utmost compassion and understanding of his needs, as well as those who came to see William and left him feeling refreshed from their lovely visit. Please forgive me if I have missed anyone, as there are so many. Much love and God bless to each and everyone of you, as we were truly blessed to have known William T. Taylor and the world will be just a bit more lonely without him. But, do not mourn his passing, as he is only a heartbeat and memory away to many who knew and loved him. So, please have a good laugh and cry and get together to remember William for all his humour and kindness. Condolences may be sent to the family www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or email [email protected]
