    1. [NS-CB] Immaculate Conception will mark its 175th anniversary Sunday

    3. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Post September 13, 2013 Friday Immaculate Conception will mark its 175th anniversary Sunday MAIN-A-DIEU - The 175th anniversary of Immaculate Conception Church will be celebrated with a special mass Sunday at 4 p.m. Mary Price, a member of the parish council and the CWL, said a special invitation goes out to the public to join in the celebrations. "The community of Main-aDieu awaits you, we look forward to seeing you, our doors are open." Bishop Brian Dunn will preside at the service along with parish priest Rev. Rojasekar Savarimuthu. Former priests will also be in attendance. "I'm not sure how many are coming but I think at least six will be there including two priests who were born here - Fr. Thomas Laphigee and Fr. Bill Burke." The Immaculate Conception Church choir will perform. A reception and lunch will follow in the church hall which is located in the basement of the church. "(It is) a chance for everybody to gather around ... meet up with others they haven't seen for years." Price believes this will be the first special anniversary the church has celebrated in the fishing village. The parish includes the communities of Bateston, Catelone, Little Lorraine and Baleine. "There is a radius of 8-10 miles. I remember myself walking five kilometres to church as we didn't have a car." Price said, like many other congregations, they have seen a decline in attendance at Immaculate Conception parish. "However we are Main-a-Dieu and it makes me feel good to say this, ' We are seeing quite a few at our weekend masses." In recognition of the 175th anniversary, the parish compiled a special book that includes history and photos. The book can be purchased for $10 and will be available at Sunday's service. "We've got 100 sold already. People are buying them to send away to their relatives." According to the book, Bishop Plessis of the Diocese of Quebec visited the area in 1815 and in 1838 the parish was established with Fr. Drummond as the first pastor. By 1886, the parish built the first church through the generosity of the parishioners. The church was destroyed by fire on 1976 and replaced by the present structure which was dedicated on Dec. 8, 1977, by Bishop William Power. For further information on the book or Sunday's service, telephone Mary Price at 733-2813.

    3. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Post September 07, 2013 Saturday "Glace Bay hospital auxiliary marks 100th anniversary" Just about every Monday morning, Ida MacDonald can be found in the gift shop at the Glace Bay Hospital. Few details are available on this photo but it's believed to be members of the Glace Bay General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary during the 1950s. The Glace Bay General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary runs the shop and through the week, members volunteer their time so it's staffed as much as possible. Like any shop, there's always something to do, whether it's organizing new products, tidying the displays or dealing with customers. And like any other auxiliary member, MacDonald knows what to do although she may be more familiar with the duties than most - she's going into her 68th year as an auxiliary member. MacDonald is just one of the amazing women of the Glace Bay General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. The auxiliary is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and as recently as this week, it was still accepting new members. According to member Valerie Ferguson, it currently has a membership of about 38 people and has no intention of slowing down any time soon. It meets the first Wednesday of every month at 2 p.m. in the hospital's boardroom. "One hundred years - it's amazing to have a still-active organization after all that time," said Ferguson. Mrs. J.T. MacPherson would no doubt be proud that the auxiliary remains committed to its original objective of raising money to supply the items needed for the care and comfort of patients. MacPherson was the organizer and first president of the auxiliary in the early years of the 20th century. She remained president for 17 years. The other officers of that initial group included Mrs. L. MacLean, vice-president; Mrs. J. Nicholson, secretary; Mrs. T. MacAulay, treasurer; and Mrs. J. Kennedy, financial secretary. The auxiliary was formed in August 1913, a month before the sod was turned for the old Glace Bay Hospital in September 1913. The hospital opened a year later. The first auxiliary had a membership of about 50 people and the first thing they bought was bed linens for the entire hospital. "We're talking 1913 and it cost $1,000 to supply all the linens," said Ferguson. "It would probably cost $100,000 today or more but the ladies washed all the new linens at home. They hung them out on the clothesline and dried them and there was no automatic washers back then - they did it by hand Š They bought the first food conveyor belt and the draperies for the hospital. It must have been a very active group. And they just met in the homes originally." When the new hospital opened in 1986, the auxiliary continued its work and through the years, the group has remained active. Because of its fundraising efforts, it has purchased everything from furnishings and oil painting for patients' rooms to windows for the hospital's chapel to medical equipment. Some of the items purchased include pressure guard mattresses, stepstools, clinical care recliners, Doppler stethoscopes, computers, a scope washer, wheelchairs, commode chairs, a volume ventilator, draperies, food conveyor, lift chair, pill carts, blanket warmers, a refrigerator for the pharmacy, hip protectors for seniors, stationary bikes for physiotherapy, a bowling set, a barbecue and even planters. The money comes from various fundraising activities through the years, everything from selling bricks at a bazaar back in 1913 to the re-issuing of a popular cookbook this year. The new cookbook is 86 pages of sweets and treats and will soon be available. Auxiliary members and volunteers from the Lend A Helping Hand group donate items to the gift shop for sale and events such as tea and sales are held through the year. A celebration of the auxiliary's 100 years will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sept. 18 on the first floor of the hospital in the X-ray lab waiting area. The public is invited to attend and there will be music, exhibits and refreshments. "It's an amazing organization," said Ferguson.

Robert 'Bones' McKay Born: January 23rd, 1944 Passed on: September 5th, 2013 "It's not the cough that carries you off. It's the coffin they carry you off in." This is one of the many silly sayings that echo through the heads of everyone who knew and loved Robert Joseph McKay. He would say it to his sons when they were suffering from colds. Now, his voice echoes these words in our heads on hearing the news of his passing peacefully in his sleep at the age of 69. He was quiet but always there for his family and friends. Sometimes grumpy. Sometimes witty. Sometimes both. Always there. His friends from Bridgeport, Glace Bay called him "Bones." From a young age, he fell in love with the shore behind his house and spent most of his life walking there. He was recycling before there was a common term for recycling. He used to scavenge old scrap from the shore and pick up bottles and cans wherever he found them. He collected things - everything. "One man's trash is another man's treasure." He gathered up a yard full of treasures that he would re-use or recycle. He was always crafty enough to make ends meet, although sometimes barely, even when there wasn't enough work in the fishery or he couldn't get a grant to work on. His yard was a treasure trove for others. It was common for men from the neighbourhood to pull up in their trucks and ask Bones for a certain piece of wood or angle iron. They would search through the seemingly endless piles and usually find what they were looking for. He didn't travel much. He also didn't tell many stories. When he did tell stories to his boys, they were usually tales of hitchhiking across Canada when he was a teenager. Later in life, he had the trip of a lifetime when he took the train from coast to coast with his partner, Ada 'Cookie' Brown. He loved music - especially the old country sounds of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Hank Snow. To the very last days, the familiar strains of "Folsom Prison Blues" would put a smile on his face. The only thing that would make that smile bigger was seeing the faces of his grandchildren. When his boys were children, he awoke every morning with the birds. He sang with the birds too. They would put pillows over their heads to try to escape from the "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!" and to steal a few extra minutes of sleep. Now, as they are grown and have children of their own, it's not uncommon for them to find those very same songs coming from their own throats. They also fight back the urge to let out those sayings that he was so known for. A man with few words has left us all with a lot to say. You will be missed Rob, Robert, Bones, Dad, Grandpa. We love you! From your wife, Ada Brown, sons, Murray, Aaron, Wayne McKay, Craig and Cory Brown and many grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid is Monday, 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery, Glace Bay. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer's or Autism Society are suggested. Born in the rear of Christmas Island, a son of the late Rory S. and Eliza MacNeil, Dan went on to marry the love of his life, Isabel (Gillis) MacNeil and together they raised three children. Papa, as the family all called him, was a veteran of the Second World War and a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. Often times, you could find him down "the well" with "the boys", selling poppies or shooting a dart on Thursday nights, where he earned the nickname, Dan Archie "Killer" MacNeil. Until retirement, Dan was employed by Devco railway for many years. Papa will be remembered for his quick wit and handsome little grin. His ability to "tell it like it is" and crack a dry joke was enough to brighten the day of anyone in his presence. A quiet and simple man, his day began at 6 a.m. over a hot cup of tea, his boiled eggs and newspaper. His day just wouldn't be the same without his morning ritual. In recent years, he never missed an episode of Two and a Half Men, only if Charlie Sheen was in it, of course. The 4 p.m. service will be officiated by Bishop Brian Dunn of the Diocese of Antigonish. The history of the church was grounded in the settlement of Irish Catholics in present day Ingonish during the 1820s. Coming from the southeast coast of Ireland, the new settlers brought their Catholic faith and their cultural traditions to the Ingonish area. Some Catholic Highland Scots as well as a few Acadians from Little Bras d'Or eventually joined the Irish in Ingonish. The first permanent Catholic church was built in Ingonish in 1857. It was eventually replaced by a new wooden building, which burned in 1911. Reacting to the tragic fire, the people of Ingonish began to build a concrete church. The cornerstone was laid in 1913 and St Peter's was completed by volunteer effort, with young and old contributing in their own way. The gravel for the concrete was hauled from the Clyburn River. Men hauled up to 10 loads of gravel per day from morning to evening. All the concrete was mixed by hand at the church. Others cut and hauled the main wooden beam of the church from up behind Warren Lake. Dora (Donovan) Baker, a native of Ingonish, living in Boston purchased the altar for the church. Rev. Ronald Rankin, who had witnessed the burning of the church in 1911, oversaw the construction of the new building. On Aug. 15, 1915, he blessed the bell that is still in the church today. Following the mass this Sunday, a social will be held at the Ingonish fire hall where master of ceremonies, Ken Donovan, will display a presentation on the history of the church and the surrounding community.
