    3. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Post September 26, 2013 Thursday "Red Brick Row designated heritage property by council" SYDNEY MINES - The Red Brick Row housing project is now a heritage property after a unanimous vote at Tuesday's monthly session of municipal council. The townhouse complex is believed to be the oldest in Canada, dating back to 1829 when the General Mining Association took over coal mining operations in Sydney Mines. Its request for designation came from the Red Row Investment Cooperative, the group that has been working to restore the 12 attached company houses on Main Street. Rick McCready, municipal planner and heritage officer, scored the property using the heritage evaluation criteria authorized by the CBRM heritage advisory committee and concluded the property scores quite high due to its age and its unique role in the history of Sydney Mines. As a result he recommended that council initiate the process of registering the complex as municipal heritage properties. Previously, the application had been the subject of considerable discussion, some of which was due to the fact that the property is a townhouse complex and that each unit is held in separate ownership. However, the issue was addressed when all owners agreed to support the request. The structural stability of the complex had also been called into question, but McCready told council Tuesday evening that after a discussion with an engineer familiar with the complex he was satisfied it was "solid," though there is work still to do. Before Tuesday's vote, District 1 Coun. Clarence Prince told fellow councillors the complex was a beautiful property. "It is worthy of heritage designation because it is the oldest company housing in Canada," said Prince. "This is the site of the first coal mine in Sydney Mines and basically a lot of mining personnel lived in this particular housing." Prince also said it was worthwhile to fix up the complex and that those repairs would benefit the community. Mayor Cecil Clarke noted the new provincial housing strategy that could present opportunities for rehabilitation. At one time Sydney Mines was filled with rows of houses referred to by names such as King William Row, Cahill's Row, Mosquito Row and numerous others. However, with the exception of Red Brick Row, all of those row houses have disappeared from the community.

MacGillivary, on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. Mom passed on into eternal life as she lived her life, with grace and dignity. She was surrounded by peace, prayer and love in her beloved piece of heaven, her home out on the Mira. She was educated in the Glace Bay school system, St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing and the University College of Cape Breton, Sydney. Gloria was well-known in the community for her work as a labour and delivery room nurse at Northside General Hospital and St. Rita Hospital, Sydney. Gloria was also known to those very close to her for her literary talents. She wrote phrase poetry and had the distinction of having her poetry published. Our mother's greatest self-proclaimed accomplishment was raising her children and watching them flourish in their lives. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com Glenn Douglas 'Dougie' Pasher, 30 1982-2013 New Waterford/ Alberta On the morning of Tuesday, September 17th, 2013 the unexpected tragic news was received by workers in Chelsea Camp, Alberta as well as in his home town that a life of one of their young friends and co-workers had ended far too soon. The life was that of Dougie Pasher, a friend to many, who like so many others from this small community headed west at a young age to earn a modest wage as a pipefitter. Dougie was born in New Waterford to Glenn and Mary (MacIsaac) Pasher on December 9th, 1982. His curly red hair, blue eyes and ready smile made him the object of everyone's affection at a very early age and all throughout his life. He attended school in his early years at Mount Carmel and went on to graduate from Breton Education Centre. Learning came easy as he rarely cracked open a book. During his senior years he served as corporal in the reserves. Passionate about sports, he excelled on the soccer field as well as on the ice. He served as captain on the BEC 'AAA" soccer team. Scoring the winning goal in his rookie year at the Admiral Cup Tournament in Dieppe, New Brunswick was his most memorable goal. Among the many hockey awards he received, his 'MVP' for top provincial defence at his last provincial tournament was one of which he was most proud. Family meant everything to Dougie, his mom and dad and brothers were his world. The nest was never empty long, if he wasn't calling home or his brothers, he was at the door to get a big hug from his, 'mudder'. He cared deeply for his huge extended family and friends. It didn't matter if you were his 1st, 2nd or 3rd cousin, you could always feel his love and the ability he had to make you feel special. Dougie had a long list of friends and each and everyone of them were in fact his true, best friend. Although he was yet to be an uncle, he was, "Uncle Dougie" to all his friend's children. Left behind to treasure his memory are parents, Glenn and Mary, brothers, Brian (Erin), Luke and Jesse, all of New Waterford and his one and only true love, Alicia MacLean. Also aunts and uncles, Greta Longphee (Cammie), Jackie (Frankie) MacPherson, Nangie (Edna) MacIsaac, Wayne (Karyn) MacIsaac, Neil (Lynn) MacIsaac, Dougie (Kim) MacIsaac, Joey (Trish) MacIsaac, Cathy (Lee) MacIsaac, Margie (MacIsaac) Power and Bunty Duprey, Jim (Wilma) Pasher, Joe (Linda) Pasher, Rob (Pauline) Pasher,Mary MacLaughlin, Judy MacGibbon (David), Bruce (Tina) Pasher, Keith (Susan) Pasher along with numerous cousins who will mourn his passing. 3. Dear Mr. Reid: I don't have any MacLellans, MacDonnells or Gillis folks in my lines (that I know of!) but just wanted to say how kind it is of you to offer to help those who have. 3. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Post September 14, 2013 Saturday BY ERIN POTTIE [email protected] "Ingonish's Catholic Church marks anniversary" There was a sense of joy in celebrating the centennial year of a church built on the principles of devotion and hard work. (SUBMITTED PHOTO"s not included with this story) BY TINA L. SHEA This decades-old photo shows what the 1857-built St. Peter's Church in Ingonish looked like. RIGHT: Built by a large volunteer effort, the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Ingonish is shown as it looks today. On Sept. 8, the congregation of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Ingonish, celebrated its 100th anniversary at a time when many churches are closing. Ingonish native and local historian Ken Donovan says the first permanent Catholic Church was built at Ingonish in 1857. It was later replaced by a wooden structure that was razed by fire in 1911. As a result of this tragedy, the community banded together to build a cement church in 1913 - a magnificent and airy structure with emerald accents. "It was a giant effort for a small community," said Donovan. "As in many small communities, you go around and you look at the churches and you say, ' Wow, somebody actually built these things.'" Donovan said beginning in the 1520s, the Basque and French started fishing off the coast of Cape Breton and coming ashore at Ingonish. However, the modern settlement of the community did not begin for another 300 years. Irish Catholics first came to Ingonish during the 1820s and by the 1850s they had settled in what became known as the Whitty and MacKinnon "intervales" of South Ingonish and the Clyburn Valley of Ingonish Centre. Hailing from the southeast coast of Ireland, Donovan said these immigrants brought with them their Roman Catholic faith and their cultural traditions. Eventually the Irish would be joined by some Catholic Highland Scots as well as a few Acadians from Little Bras d'Or. "They would have brought in the cement, but all the gravel and all the labour and all of the wood is all local," said Donovan of the church structure. "The Catholic Church talks about that, they say ' Well the (churches) are really the people.' But I think with buildings, buildings mean a lot, especially the churches because you have baptisms, weddings and funerals and they carry a special meaning." Donovan said at the time St. Peter's was constructed, everyone in the church community contributed in their own way. The gravel for the concrete was hauled from the Clyburn River. Meanwhile local residents Paddy Doyle and his son Tom, together with Tom Barron and his grandson Jim, hauled up to 10 loads of gravel per day from morning to evening and the concrete was mixed by hand at the church. Meanwhile, the main wooden beam of the church was cut and hauled from up behind Warren Lake. And wood came by way of Johnny Barron, who along with his brothers Tommy and Godfrey, donated much of the lumber for the church from their mill at Ingonish Harbour. On Aug. 15, 1915, Fr. Ronald Rankin, who had witnessed the burning of the church, blessed the bell which is still in the church today. At the time it was built, Donovan says religion was a vital element in the lives of the people in terms of education, health care and social welfare. Devout parishioners would often make a 14-mile, round-trip trek to church for mass. Now a part of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the St. Peter's Church is often an attraction for tourists and golfers at nearby Cape Breton Highlands Links golf course. "You see people stopping by and talking pictures all the time of the church, it's quite striking and it's in beautiful condition, so it's a bit of an icon for the bottom of the hill there," said Donovan. Donovan said the recent celebration included Bishop Brian Dunn of the Diocese of Antigonish and many former Ingonish parish priests. Also in attendance were numerous sisters and members of St. Martha's and the Sisters of Charity. "It was a good news story and the church was filled to capacity," said Donovan. "People were so happy because they were reconnecting with people and I don't think I've ever seen people so happy. I just mean that, sheer joy."
