Her crochet hook is back in its case, car keys on the wall, and credit card quiet in her billfold. Buoyed by community, friends, and family, both near and far, Helen's life was filled with determination and love. Born on Sept. 26, 1914, into a closely knit family, Helen was the daughter of the late Royal and Edna Andrews of Marion, Ohio, and older sister to Marnie and Katy. Helen began driving at the age of 13, apprenticed to a seamstress after graduating from high school, and then went into nurses' training in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated and began nursing in 1939 as supervisor in surgery. Later Helen shifted to industry, providing nursing and a sympathetic ear to workers at a steel plant and at Universal Cooler, where she met and married Bonar Thompson when he returned from the U.S. Navy after the war. When Helen was 40, Bonar persuaded her to leave Ohio and help him establish a roofing-and-siding business in his birth province of New Brunswick. They hauled a 30-foot mobile home across the country, and Helen jumped out to stop traffic as they crossed bridges. In Canada she bonded with her in-laws, and made a beautiful home in Moncton, overlooking the Petitcodiac River. She was a lifelong member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Nicknamed "The Roadrunner" by the boy next door, Helen shopped, went to meetings, gardened, sewed, and directed Thompson Bros. Ltd. workmen in New Brunswick and Labrador. She drove to Ohio twice a year, to Florida, to British Columbia, to Maine for truckloads of asbestos shingles. Helen always had a kind ear for friends, and she made a friend of everyone she met. When Bonar died in 1974, Helen closed down the business, worked as secretary to two ministers, and traveled. In 1987 she bought property in Indian Brook, Cape Breton, to be near her daughter, moving here permanently in 1993. Always instructed and comforted by her faith, she was a member of St. Ann's Bay United Church, and was vastly supported by her church family, Bonnie's work family (Ron Caplan and Sharon Irwin), our community, and Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Hospice Society, and Continuing Care. Besides her husband and parents, Helen was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Swann and Kathryn Apt, daughter-in-law, Gay Thompson and grandson, Wayne, brothers-in-law, Paul Groves, Lyle Swann, Rob Roy Apt, Arnold McWilliam and Robert, Gordon, George, Frank and Earl Thompson, sisters-in-law, Doris, Esther, Rhoda, and Kathryn Thompson and Margaret McWilliam, sister-in-law and special friend, Elnor Thompson, and many good friends. Helen is survived by her daughter, Bonnie; son, Richard; grandsons, Seth and Lloyd; sister-in-law, Muriel Thompson; special nieces, Karen (Jim) Kozlowski and Marion Thompson (John Roberts) and family; beloved caregivers, Gloria Mauger and Grace Ann MacDermid, and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends old and new and old and young! One could say that the themes of Helen's life are: Driving, and Friendship, and Work - in about that order! A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Helen Thompson will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Helen may be made to a charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com. Alma Bishop Passed in: Sydney Passed on: October 16th, 2013 With heavy hearts but grateful spirits the family of Alma Bishop regret to announce her passing on Oct. 16, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Alma is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Ernie Bishop; two daughters, Debbie (Frankie) Morrison, Patricia (Francis) Grant and one son, Ernie (Tricia). She has been blessed with eight grandchildren, David (Butch), Natalie, Leslie, Alicia, Britney, Stephen, Jack, and MacKenzie and three great-grandchildren, Brock, Layla Jo, and Jesse. Alma is also survived by her brothers, Tom, Ted (Irene), Ray (Marie) and Brian (Lynn) and sister, Helen (Hubert) Chiasson. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Theresa, Kay (Charlie) Boudreau, Barbara, and Dorothy; brothers-in-law, Jimmy Bagnell, Ray Eldridge, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alma was predeceased by her parents, Azariah (Roy) and Blanche (Bobbitt) Chipman; stepmother, Eva (Green) Chipman-Lushman; brothers, Ben Wal, Jack Eddy and Hardy; sisters, Mary, Diane and Bev. Alma worked as a young woman at Gaffins Store in New Waterford for a time before marrying the love of her life Ernie Bishop at the age of 20. She re-entered the work force in 1968 working at the General Instruments plant for a short time followed by 10 plus years at K-mart, several years at Stedman's store and the Pharmasave in New Waterford until her retirement. Alma was born the seventh of 13 children. Alma was the youngest of seven children when her mother suddenly passed away. After her father Roy remarried Alma received another six siblings whom she adored and loved equally as she did her older six siblings. Her sister Diane was more than a sister she was her best friend with whom she spent many Saturday and Sunday evenings with as well as many many Miner's vacations. Alma and her stepmother Eva were more like friends than mother and daughter but Alma emulated some of Eva's characteristics when it came to Strength of Spirit and Tenacity in times of adversity. Alma also had several aunts and cousins that she held in high regard Bobby, Ruth, Pearl and Blondie are a few of those special people. Alma was also so very happy with her extended family. After her marriage Alma enjoyed spending time with all of her in-laws. She loved them all as well as their children, but Buddy held a special spot. Alma had many friends, she was outgoing and full of life but more importantly she loved living life. Alma just got it done, one never had to wonder what Alma thought - she told you. She did not accept age as a time to slow down but more of a challenge. She knew that getting older did not mean you had to act old, it only meant you had less time so you better not waste any of it. Alma enjoyed music and dancing all her life. Alma and Ernie could be found on a dance floor somewhere in New Waterford or not far afield dancing at some venue most Saturday nights for many many years. In the more recent years Alma could be found dancing several times a week with her line dancing buddies. A very active woman Alma walked daily, worked out at the local gym, and up until a few years ago was an avid skater and enjoyed riding her bike. Alma also loved going for drives and camping. She and Ernie would drive anywhere and they put many a miles on together. They have seen most of this country through their windshields. Although in the past 10 years they have become seasonal campers in Baddeck and their drives were less expansive. Most of all Alma loved family, all her family, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She always had a special spark when she was around young people. They seemed to be her drug, her eyes got brighter and her voice got higher. Alma was a woman of great belief. She was an active member of St. Michael's Choir and CWL for many years. Alma prayed daily and had an unwavering faith in the Lord. She knew that we cannot take anything with us when we leave this world but what we leave behind counts. We do rise again in the faces of our children and they carry our spirit with them. So teach them well for a life well lived is one to be proud of and Alma knew how to live. Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 from 2-6 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Alma will take place Monday, Oct. 21st, at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Parish Church, Dominion, with Fr. Danny Boudreau officiating. Cremation will follow. Cape Breton Post - 11 Oct 2013 Friday B.C. woman seeks information on Cape Breton grandparents On a recent trip to Sydney, I enjoyed reading the Cape Breton Post every morning as I drank my coffee. It has the same qualities I found in many people I met during my stay in Sydney and environs - warmth, spirit and helpfulness. I hope this letter might spark a memory or willingness to share information about the past. My mother was born in Sydney on Feb. 8, 1926. Her parents were unmarried and she was given up at birth to be raised in a foster home in Halifax. Her mother named her Shirley. I believe that her surname, MacDonald, was her father's surname. She always told me that her mother's surname was McDougall. Her foster mother knew the names of both birth parents, and my mother told me that her foster mother also had a copy of her birth certificate verifying the identities of her birth parents, but somehow my mother never received this birth certificate and I can find no trace of it now. My mother died in 2010, never having known her birth parents. This was not unusual for the times, of course, but I believe that she deserved to know who her parents were, and I am determined to find out as much as I can. It's too late for her, but not for her four children and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom are just as interested in family history as most Canadians. Because my mother was never formally adopted, the Nova Scotia adoption disclosure services program is of no help to me. I was very surprised to learn from the Nova Scotia Vital Statistics Agency that I can't have a copy of my mother's birth certificate until 100 years after her birth. That's 2026. It's unlikely my mother's biological parents are still alive. But perhaps there are others, related to her parents and thus to me and my extended family, who might be willing to provide me with information. I would love to know where her parents came from, and something about their lives, gifts and histories. If any of the details I've provided ring ancient bells, I would be grateful to hear from readers who might be able to share something of my mother's family history with me. And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea.But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home! Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourn of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar.
