All lifetimes have beginnings, and endings, and there is living in between. Mrs. Dugas lived her 102 years to the fullest. She enjoyed an abundance of joyous times with close family and friends. Many often heard her say, "I've lived a good life." She was supported and surrounded by the love of close family members throughout her lifetime including the last days of her life. Born in West Arichat, Nova Scotia, on Cape Breton Island on Dec. 2, 1910, she was one of ten children born to Philomina and Benjamin Theriault. She grew up on Cape Breton Island and attended school in West Arichat. On her way to school she would count three big waves and then "run like the dickens" to cross the breakwater. She fondly spoke of her visits to bring sugar to the Micmac Indians who inhabited the island at that time. She was 16 when she left the island to move to the United States. On June 10, 1934 she married her childhood love Joseph Francis Dugas. They moved to Cape Cod where they settled, raised their son and built three homes together. Francis predeceased her in 1993 after 59 years of marriage. Mrs. Dugas delighted in people. She was very hospitable and proud to have others visit her home. There was always a full candy dish in the living room, a tour for newcomers, and one never left her home hungry. She relished the outdoors. One of her favorite pastimes was planting the vegetable garden, making pickles, chili sauce, and sharing the bounty with others. Long days spent at Craigville Beach and poking around in stores brought her great pleasure. On various summer days, she could often be found reminiscing with friends and family in her backyard swing. In addition to her only child, Joseph Francis Dugas Jr., she is survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren and her only surviving sister, Marie Agnes Martin. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Saint Francis Xavier. Burial will be private. submitted by almagorra <[email protected]>

Born in Florence on April 5, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Purvis and Margaret 'Maggie' (Sullivan) King. Our mother was a devoted member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines. She was a regular contributor to various church fund raising efforts, and together with her husband, raised their children in a Christian environment. Edith and Francis were a very popular couple in Sydney Mines for many years, and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing them. We all will remember her 'good cup of tea, a 'sweetie', and naturally, the latest gossip. She also loved to laugh and reminisce about growing up in Cape Breton, and the wonderful time she spent with her brothers and sisters, with whom she shared a lifelong bond. Edith was born and raised in Florence and was the great-great granddaughter of several Cape Breton Pioneer Families who crossed the Atlantic to live and prosper in a new land. These pioneer families settled in the Little Bras d'Or and Mill Creek areas. Her ancestors include the King, Sullivan, Cantwell, LeJeune (Young), Richard (Reashore & Richaur) and Dugas families. No doubt there will be a joyous reception awaiting her in Heaven. Her passing will be mourned, yet her life will be thoughtfully remembered by a host of family, friends and acquaintances. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn (James Edwards); her son Lauchie (Doreen); daughter-in-law Wendy (Boutilier); and special granddaughters Geralyn and Michelle (Vince). She is also survived by an additional two granddaughters, four great-granddaughters, and numerous nieces and nephews. In her final years she received an enormous and continuing amount of support from Wendy, Geralyn and Michelle. A special thank you as well to her special niece and nephews; Shirley and Dougie LeBlanc, Harold MacKinnon, her good friend Patti MacAulay, Dr. Wawer, Cindy LeBlanc, and the nursing staff of 2 West. Edith would be proud of the men who will guide her to her final resting place; Carl Gardner, Vince Marsden, Harold MacKinnon, Doug LeBlanc, Buddy Pentecost and Greg LeBlanc. Besides her parents, Edith was predeceased by her husband John Francis McMullin, her dear son Gerard Francis (Jed) McMullin, her sisters Alice, Veronica, Genny and Margie, and her brothers Lewis, Dave, Harold and Pius Augustine (in infancy). In lieu of flowers, donations in Edith's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral Mass to remember Edith's life will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church (formerly St. Pius X) with Fr. Thomas John officiating. A reception will be held in the parish hall, following the Mass. A private burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines. Condolences may be sent to [email protected] David Joseph Johnston Born In: Sydney Born: March 1st, 1954 Passed in: Fort Myers Florida Passed on: October 25th, 2013 With broken hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our extraordinary husband, father, and brother, David Joseph Johnston, of Sydney, N.S., and Fort Myers, Fla. He departed this life on Oct. 25, 2013, at his winter residence in Fort Myers. Though we mourn his premature passing, we will always remember the great satisfaction he received from being of service to others. We will continue to celebrate and carry with us his kind and gentle spirit and his ability to appreciate the humour in life. Dave was born in Sydney, N.S. on March 1, 1954, and grew up in Ashby. He was passionate about sports such as baseball, hockey and golf throughout his life, and played high school hockey for Sydney Academy. He later played for St. Francis Xavier University and the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates in between studying and partaking in the festive camaraderie of university life. Although his hockey playing ended after university, he continued to be involved with the Cape Breton Metro Hockey Association where he served on the Board of Directors at the time of his passing. After graduating from St. F.X. (B.Com.), Dave received his Chartered Accountant designation in 1976 with Thorne Riddell (predecessor firm of KPMG) in Sydney. In 1983, he was appointed the youngest partner of KPMG Canada at that time, proving that hard work does pay off. He retired in 2010 from MGM Associates in Sydney. Throughout his career, he was a dedicated professional who took pride in accomplishing a job well done. However, he still found time to fulfill his role as a family man, attending numerous hockey tournaments and dance recitals, and leading the kids on annual Christmas "stocking missions" with (seeming) enthusiasm. While he continually offered words of wisdom and reason to his family and friends, he provided just the right amount of comic relief, reminding us of the value in seeing the lighter side of things. Dave happily embraced retirement, trading full-time-work for full-time-golf. He was a member of the Lingan Golf & Country Club for 35 years where he served on the Board of Directors on three separate occasions. Following retirement, he was also a member of Gateway Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers. Through golf, Dave had a close circle of both "old friends" and "new friends," which he greatly cherished. Aside from spending his spare time on the greens, Dave was a voracious reader and enjoyed working in the yard, taking great pride in his property. Dave is survived by his wife, Pamela Stevens; son, Steven, Sussex, N.B.; daughter, Lauren, Vancouver, B.C.; sisters, Gloria (Rick) Farmer, Terry (John) Williams; and brother-in-law, Angus MacLean, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Eileen and Bernard Johnston, sister, Bernadette MacLean, and mother-and-father-in-law, Jack and Elsie Stevens. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Alexandra Street, with reception to follow. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Alternatively, we encourage those who wish to make donations to consider donating blood to Canadian Blood Services, as Dave was a regular blood donor during his adult life. These are the things that measure the worth Of a man as a man, regardless of birth. Not - What was his station? But - had he a heart? And - How did he play his God-given part? Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer? To bring back a smile, to banish a tear? Not - What was his church? Not - What was his creed? But - Had he befriended those really in need? Not - What did the sketch in the newspaper say? But - How many were sorry when he passed away? These are the things that measure the worth Of a man as a man, regardless of birth. 1. Re: [NS-CB] ancestory.com advice
    2. Thank you Bill, this is a lot of good advice. I created the 3rd tree related to the Stewart family for a friend. Years ago I had created an Ancestry account with so much information when I had a 3 month free membership. I am unable to find that tree now. Maybe it was not kept being about 10 years ago and with a free membership. I also linked with many other members, not like it is now. This time I wasn’t so lucky and can’t seem to find many connections. Likely due to, as I am hearing, so many people are privatizing their information. I am going to reactivate my account soon and use the resources given to me by you and the list. I have access to Ancesty.com but very limited through my familytreemaker possibly because I synced familytreemaker with Ancestry when my Ancestry account was active. Thank you for looking into this for me. I have created a new tree on FamilySearch and really enjoy that site but have a long way to go. But again it’s nice to start with a clean slate and refresh. I am not sure if I have seen the Rootsweb World Connect project. I’ll go google that right after I send this out. I am not good at searching the site Scotlands people. I am frustrated with the limited information I have regarding my MacDonald ancestors. It states they are from Ruaidh, Lochaber and I’m not sure where that is although so many tell me is is Roybridge, Lochaber I’m not convinced and even if they could have been there briefly prior to their emigration. I’m not sure where to start but below is the information I would need to start. The Mabou Pioneers Vol 1 pg 484 states list my ancestors as “MacDonald Glencoe “Aonghas Mac Ghilleasbuig” and his wife Mararet MacDonald (unsure if this is her married or birth last name?) But this would be a marriage I could search the church records however they were Catholic so there probably is no documentation of their marriage around 1800. They had 3 sons and 5 daughters prior to their emigration from said “Ruaidh, Lochaber Scotland about the year 1822”. That would be another place to look for births and baptisms but they are Catholic and between 1801-1820. One son died in Scotland. I’m not sure about the death records or burial records in Scotland in that time either. It states that they landed near South West Mabou (does this mean their ship or their settlement?) they later moved to Glencoe where they settled and took up land near Glencoe Chapel. I’m not sure where Glencoe Chapel was but I believe I read somewhere else as it being referred to as Glencoe hill?? Possibly Glencoe church is seated here now? I have yet to travel to both Nova Scotia and Scotland so I personal do not know. The names of Angus’ Children are listed as the following but what are the chances of me finding them using Scotlands People at that time? 1. ANGUS"AONGHAS MAC GHILLEASBUIG"1 MACDONALD was born Abt 1779 in Ruiadh,Lochaber,Scotland"MP 484". He married MARGARET MACDONALD. She was born 1780. Children of ANGUS"AONGHAS MACDONALD and MARGARET MACDONALD are: 2. i. ARCHIBALD"GILLEASBUIG MOR"2 MACDONALD, b. Abt 1801, "MP 484". ii. ALEXANDER"JOHN" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1802; d. Scotland. (son that died prior to their emigration) 3. iii. ANGUS"AONGHAS OG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1803. 4. iv. HUGH"AONGHAS MAC 'ILLEASBUIG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1805, ."MDHIC 239,MP 490". 5. v. CHRISTINA"AONGHAS" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1807. vi. FLORA MACDONALD, b. Abt 1808. 6. vii. MARGARET MACDONALD, b. Abt 1809. 7. viii. MARY"AONGHAS MAC ILLEASBUIG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1820, Scotland. 8. ix. CATHERINE"AONGHAS MAC 'ILLEASBUIG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1806. Thank you and everyone for all your help and input! On one part of the page it tells me that you have three trees - the two you listed and another; it also says that you have been a member since 2012 and have not logged in for nine months. Elsewhere it says that you logged in two days ago... When you post your tree to ancestry, as a public tree, it can be viewed by anyone logged into ancestry. If you want your tree to be available to someone that is not an ancestry member, may I suggestthe Rootsweb World Connect project. Using ancestry as a resource is good because of the amount of data that they have but personally I don't like their search engine. Family Search is good and is free, and you might try Scotlands People. On Sat, Oct 26, 2013 at 10:04 AM, <[email protected]> wrote: Hello list! I am wondering about the ancestry.com website and how it works after you deactivate your account through non-payment and plan to reactive in the future. Currently my account is deactivated and my user name is MacDonald_Suzanne. I am wondering while I have limited access to my information on the site I can still log on through my family tree maker, view my family trees and at times send and receive messages to other users. I am wondering if anyone else can view my trees? I have one McDonald Family Tree and another tree named MacDonald. Can someone with access to Ancestry.com let me know if they can see these trees? Or my account? I will be activating my account soon but before I do I would like some advice as to other family finding websites that I could use? I am not literate with Ancestry.com at all although I did add quite a bit of information and find many ancestors. I have been told by a few members not to use ancestry.com because by doing so I am giving up my rights and information to them but personally if others can see my information and connect to it, that is what I want. If I ever publish a book, it will be for family and to be shared. Thank you and any advice and information is welcome to this enquiry and the information there in.
