Born in West L'Ardoise, N.S., he was the son of the late Charles Adolphus and Annie Mae (Briand) Mombourquette. Alex was a man of action, and believed deeply in the notion that a single person could and should make a difference to the world around him. This was evident in his career, his volunteer work and his willingness to help friends and family. Alex built a 30-year career with the Co-operators and was a committed member of the co-operative movement. His career took him, Mary and family from L'Ardoise to St John's twice, Sydney, Moncton twice, Regina and Halifax, making many friends along the way. He and Mary retired in Barra Head. Alex supported his community and church and was involved in many volunteer organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, Voluntary Planning, and Co-op Council. He was named 2006 Distinguished Co-operator by the N.S. Co-operative Council and was recently named honorary president of the Progressive Conservative party of N.S. After retirement, Alex and Mary spent many years travelling around North America visiting family and friends. When Mary's health declined, Alex devoted his life to taking care of her, so she could live out her years at home. Alex missed Mary dearly but was beginning to laugh and enjoy life again, travelling to visit his children and grandchildren, making new friends, and talking of future adventures. He was active until his last day. He will be dearly missed. Alex was a loving husband, father, and brother who held family and friends in the highest regard. MacDONALD Marguerite Reynelda "Nelda" MacDonald of Port Hood passed away peacefully on November 15th in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 26th, 1937 to beloved parents John Alex, deceased in 1966, and mother Beatrice who passed away in 1986. Nelda resided in Port Hood in her family home for her entire life. At 20 years of age Nelda began a 37-year career at the Inverness County Courthouse, spending her last twelve years there as the registrar of deeds and probate. Those years of her life were very meaningful to Nelda, and even in recent months she was able to recount many details of her career: the satisfaction she took in her work, the friendships made, and the countless laughs and memories shared with coworkers along the way. She considered herself fortunate to have been able to find work "at home," and to continue to provide companionship to dear Bea, her mother. Nelda was predeceased by older brothers Kenny and Wency and sister Cecilia. She is survived by brothers Donald (Montreal), Joe (Bramalea, Ont.), Mary Evelyn "Bobbie" (Port Hood), and Joanie (Barrie, Ont.). She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews to whom she was so good throughout the years. Nelda contributed much to her community, volunteering for over 30 years as bookkeeper for St. Peter's Parish, and spending many hours of her retired years in quiet acts of charity, faith and kindness. In healthier days she was an active member of the Legion of Mary and a consistent helper to the Sisters of Our Lady Immaculate during their years of service in Port Hood. Nelda enjoyed life's simple pleasures: enduring faith, loyal friends, her feline buddy "Mochin," listening to old stories, Celtic music, being around "little ones" and, in earlier years, Sunday afternoon drives with "Mama," something she recalled fondly just days before her passing. Nelda believed in doing any task, great or small, to the best of her ability and lived her life by that standard. Dear sister, aunt, cousin and friend, we honour your life and will miss you greatly. Visitation is being held from 2:00-9:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 20th in Port Hood Resting Place with a funeral mass at St. Peter's Church, Port Hood, on Thursday, November 21st at 11:00 a.m. Donations in Nelda's memory may be made to the St. Peter's Cemetery Fund or to your local food bank. Betty married Dan Joe and together raised six children in the community of Inverness. Betty demonstrated the qualities of kindness and hospitality throughout her life. There was rarely a meal time when friends and neighbours were not at her dining table enjoying her cooking or feasting on her baking. Betty was a caring, intelligent, and compassionate person and a devout member of Stella Maris Parish. Betty was the last surviving member of her family, being predeceased by her parents, James and Rose Anne (Ryan); her sisters, Anne, Frances, Margaret, and Mary; brothers James, Ed, Pat, Lauchlin, and John. RASMUSSEN Donald Edwin Rasmussen, 96, died peacefully, surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, on Friday, October 18th, 2013, in Berkeley, California. Don remained active and independent to the end, walking daily, attending exercise classes, and enjoying people. Don was born in Kolze (now Schiller Park), Illinois, in 1916. His father was a railroad engineer and his mother a teacher. Don attended Elmhurst College and the University of Illinois, where he received a PhD in sociology and met his wife Lore, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany. In 1942, Don and Lore moved to Alabama, where Don taught sociology and economics and Lore teacher education at Talladega College, a historically black college. Don and Lore became committed "foot soldiers" in the early civil rights movement. During their first year in Alabama they were both jailed by the Birmingham police for eating with the executive director of the Southern Negro Youth Congress in Nancy's Cafe, a black restaurant. They had violated Birmingham's segregation codes prohibiting blacks and whites from dining together. Don and Lore's remarkable experiences in Alabama were recounted in From Swastika to Jim Crow, a documentary film aired on PBS in 2001. In 2003, Talladega College presented Don and Lore with honorary doctorate degrees for "your contributions to education and your untiring fight to ensure human rights." In the early 1950s, Don and Lore co-directed Circle Pines Center, a cooperative family summer camp and education center in Michigan frequented by social activists from across the U.S. In 1956, they moved with their three sons to Pennsylvania, where Don became headmaster of the Miquon School, a cooperative elementary school. Don co-authored the Basic Reading Series, a linguistic approach to reading for young children still published by McGraw-Hill Education. After leaving Miquon, Don worked with Lore in public education at the Durham Child Development Center in Philadelphia, where he specialized in teacher professional development. Don and Lore moved to Berkeley, California in the mid-1980s. In 1984 and 1986, Don led teams of U.S educators on professional visits to China, where they trained editors of People's Education Press (PEP) on innovative approaches to mathematics and science education. Don brought the first computers used for educational purposes to PEP and had remained close to PEP leadership and staff. His last trip to China was in 2009 at the age of 93. A committed world adventurer, Don traveled extensively in Central and South America, China, Europe and Scandinavia, making friends, hiking, and contributing to educational projects. From the late 1960s, Don spent most summers in Meat Cove and Bay St. Lawrence on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island. Don is survived by three sons, Peter (and Wei Zhang) in Berkeley, David (and Tamara) in Bay St. Lawrence, Nova Scotia, and Steven (and Felicia Woytak) in Berkeley; nine grandchildren, Rochelle, Michael, Donald, Aran, Meril, Barbara, Marie, Viki and Scott; and twelve great-grandchildren. Mary Gertrude 'Gert' Batten Born In: New Aberdeen Born: November 18th, 1913 Passed on: November 16th, 2013 Mary Gertrude 'Gert' Batten was the second of 15 children born to Isaac and Catherine (Haley) Batten. She passed peacefully away in the presence of family on Saturday evening on the eve of her hundredth birthday. Save for the three years spent in military service during the Second World War, Gert lived in the family home on 5th Street, New Aberdeen, until she became a resident at the Veterans' Wing of Taigh Na Mara four years ago. Gert was an expert seamstress. During the Second World War, Gert was in the Air Force and put her sewing skills to use making parachutes. When she returned to Glace Bay she studied to become a seamstress and made her living sewing. A woman of faith, Gert was a life long member of St. John's Parish and a former member of the Ladies Guild. Her handiwork and baking were regular features at their fall fairs. Gert was a loving daughter who took care of her parents at home until their deaths. She was like a second mother to her younger siblings. Her many nieces and nephews fondly remember that you never visited Number 2 without being offered a jam-jam or molasses cookie or a slice of homemade bread. Christmas meant a fruit cake from Aunt Gert. Although legally blind, Gert continued to bake as long as she lived on 5th Street. After her sight failed, Gert continued her love of reading by listening to her stories on books supplied by the CNIB. At home the radio was always on and Gert kept herself well informed on current events. She had a wonderful memory and until her final illness in the past few weeks was actively engaged in conversation. Gert is survived by her brothers, Jim, Taigh Na Mara, Tom, Smith Falls, Ont., Naish and his wife Elvira, Glace Bay, and Philip and his wife Ruth, Grand Cache, Alberta. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Robert Guest March 5, 1922 - November 10, 2013 Passed away peacefully at the General Hospital with family and listening to his favourite music. Son of James Guest and Mary Dickson from his first love Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Bob was a loving husband to Colleen (McRae) and loyal father to Brian and Robyn Guest. He was a thoughtful grandfather to Devyn and Quinnlan and a devoted friend. A proud graduate from Acadia University, Bob excelled academically in chemistry and dedicated his forty-year career to public service in the Government of Canada. Bob was a considerate and gentle man. Many friends at the RA Centre, Rideau Tennis Club, and Energy Mines and Resources benefited from the organizer and leader in him. A generous friend and father, Bob had an understated goodness that drew people to him for his insight and advice. He quietly insisted that everyone around him slow down to enjoy the simple things in life. Never one to judge, Bob made space for a family to grow protected, supported and confident. A man who engaged in ideas and politics in a way that was never imposing or forced; Bob simply led by example. As a father, Bob taught us many things including (but definitely not limited to) how to think for ourselves in a sea of conflicting ideas; that the more you learn the more you realize you don't know; and, that acceptance and love are enduring qualities to be valued. His love of dogs, music, tennis, badminton and fine food kept him happy until the end. His life changed dramatically several weeks ago with a simple fainting spell. In the end, he lost his strength, his ability to eat, to walk and finally his voice. He left us quietly, gradually, holding our hands and reminding us to slow down and notice the simple things, the things that do not command attention and the love among us. Above all, Bob was an understated presence in an all to often aggressive world. A kind and selfless man of intellect, curiosity and love - a tender husband, father, friend, and an example of the kind of person we all wish we could be. Friends are invited to a Memorial Gathering at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. Speeches and tributes to honour Bob's life will take place around 3 p.m. In Memoriam donations can be made C I S V Ottawa-an independent, volunteer organization promoting cross-cultural friendship and learning P. Elizabeth 'Betty' Kearney Back to Cape Breton Post Born In: Noranda Quebec Born: March 24th, 1934 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: November 12th, 2013 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Elizabeth 'Betty' Kearney on Nov. 12, 2013. Betty was at home, surrounded by her loving family, where she died peacefully. Betty's life began in Noranda, Que., March 24, 1934. She was the third eldest of nine children born to Alec Dan and Jessie (MacQuarrie) MacLennan of Inverness. At the age of 17, Betty began training in the nursing program at New Waterford General Hospital and graduated in 1955. Her nursing career spanned 40 years in New Waterford hospitals with many years as head nurse in the emergency department.Betty established a reputation as a firm, but fair, hard-working, dedicated nurse, respected by all those she worked with. She treated everyone with kindness and compassion, and she always felt it was important to "make a connection" with all the people she met and cared for. Betty had many fond memories of her former colleagues, but she felt that her greatest legacy was her family. In 1956, Betty and her devoted husband, Clarence (Tantz), began their married life together and welcomed the first of their four children in 1957. Betty's family tree continued to flourish, giving her the title of "Grandma" to 11, and "Great-Grandma" (GG) to two. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many. Her homemade pancakes and biscuits were tops on the menu at weekend sleepovers, along with an occasional trip to the Bayside for a butterscotch sundae. "Grandma" loved spending time with her grandkids, as well as sitting on her front deck in the warm summer days, sipping a cup of tea and reading the paper in the company of friends, or her sisters, Joan and Dolly. Betty couldn't say enough about the loyal friends she had, from her "golden girls" to the Mt. Carmel Church Choir. She always looked forward to the "golden girls" gatherings numerous times throughout the year. Another special group are "Betty's Angels" - devoted members of her family and friends who supported her in the Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope for the past three years. She was deeply grateful to them for their support, especially this year when they brought the walk to her, because she was unable to make it herself. In the words of her youngest grandson, "I'll miss Grandma a lot, but she would want us to keep calm and carry on," so Betty's Angels will meet at the walk again next year, in Betty's memory. We will miss Betty's sense of humour and fun-loving ways, but we are thankful for her 79 years of life, which were an inspirational gift to all those who crossed her path. Betty was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband, Tantz, in 2002, her brother, Clem, and sister, Christina. Betty is survived by daughter, Kathy (Mike) Hinchey, Antigonish; sons, David (Paula), Antigonish, Paul (Colleen), Fort McMurray, Sandy (Heather), New Waterford, and grandchildren, Kimberly, Ryan, Mitchell, Adam, Alex, Brennan, Shannon, Erin, Mackenzie, Ben and Nicholas and great-grandchildren, Andrew and Emma; sisters, Joan (Wally) Cameron, Boisdale, Dolly Hill, Lower Sackville; brothers, Toby MacLennan, Ontario, Manion MacLennan, John R. MacLennan and Chisholm (Diane) MacLennan, all of New Waterford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St. in New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held Friday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Parish of St. Leonard with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will follow immediately afterwards at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception at the KOC Hall, Plummer Avenue. Alice Almond Born: May 20th, 1938 Passed on: November 10th, 2013 Alice Almond, mother, mentor, fashionista, Red Hatter, tarabish player, champion baker and one of Cape Breton's greatest advocates passed away Nov. 10, 2013, at the age of 75. As her children we are heartbroken with her sudden passing and wish we could have had more time with her. We take comfort in the everyday memories we have of Mom and feel truly blessed to have grown up in the wonderful family that she and Dad made for us - creating memories that will stay with us for life. Mom was born in Reserve Mines, and was the daughter of the late Walter and Veronica (Fahey) Finlayson. She married our Dad, Michael, in 1960 and together they had 50 wonderful years of marriage before Dad passed away just two years ago. They lived in Boston shortly after marrying but moved back to Cape Breton in the late 60s to raise our family. They complemented each other well, socialized often and loved to go dancing almost as much as we enjoyed watching them together. Mom often said Dad was the wind beneath her wings that allowed her to fulfill her career and community aspirations. Mom's working life spanned more than 50 years during which time she held a number of increasingly senior administrative roles in the private and public sector before retiring just five years ago. For most people the countdown to retirement begins in your 50s - maybe 60s but Mom loved her work too much to quit. Undaunted by challenge, Mom spent the bulk of her career working for the federal government to boost employment in Cape Breton. She worked tirelessly for decades creating programs to train and retrain people, to assist individuals find meaningful work and with organizations to create opportunities for Cape Bretoners. She made a difference for so many people. For Mom, it wasn't just a job - she loved to see people reach their potential and gave so many the confidence and support they needed at difficult times in their lives. We are and always will be incredibly proud of Mom and all that she accomplished in her professional career devoting her life to helping others. She gave willingly and often to her community over the years volunteering for countless organizations including the Cape Breton Regional Municipality Task Force, the Association for Safer Cape Breton Communities, the Advisory Committee on Queen's Counsel Appointments, the IWK Hospital, Junior Achievement and was the founder of the Arlene MacNeil Trust Fund Foundation. For her efforts she received many honours: First Lady of the Year, Beta Sigma Phi International, 1995; Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation; the Merit Award for Public Service Entrepreneurship; Award for Outstanding Commitment to Community Service from the Nova Scotia Director General and was one of the top 10 finalists for the Canadian Women's Mentor Awards. In 1999, she was recognized in the Who's Who of Canadian Women publication. Despite a busy career and volunteer life, Mom had lots of hobbies and a wonderful circle of friends. She was the founder and an active member of the Cape Breton Chapter of the Red Hat Society, enjoyed a game of tarabish a couple of times a week at one of the local gathering spots, was a bit of a political junkie and in recent years took up gardening. She loved to entertain friends at home and turned her garage into a make shift hall complete with enough tables and chairs to host card tournaments and parties. She loved to shop and found the search for a bargain exhilarating - a passion she passed along to us. She was well-known for her cooking and baking. Mom was always making something for someone - our family, the local clergy, a neighbour, a sick friend, or her fellow card players. She was one of these people who could take one gigantic bowl and then all of a sudden on the counter would appear four pies, three pans of squares and a batch of tea biscuits, all before most of us were out of bed. And she made the best pancakes hands down. She was the most wonderful mother. She was always there when we needed advice or support dropping everything on a dime when someone called. She taught us to be selfless and to see the bigger picture. She was the ultimate optimist who believed attitude was everything. We often said that Mom was the champion of the underdog taking the side of the person most needing her support. She was strong-willed and opinionated (but in a nice way) and you never wondered where she stood on any issue. She could stretch a dollar and ran our home as efficiently as she managed her career. She regularly visited our relatives in Boston, loved cars (especially her current convertible), the Casino, travelling, American Idol and dark rum and cherished her dog Bella, her constant companion at home. She recently opened a part of her home to three international students who became instant friends to Mom. She relished her role as Gramma and never hesitated to overstep boundaries and dish out advice. That's why we loved her. Like she did with her own children, she challenged her grandchildren to work hard and give their best effort. She took personal pride in their academic and athletic accomplishments and always took their side in any debate with one of us. It was a right of passage in our family that each of her granddaughters learned to make their first pie under her watchful eye. Left to grieve are her five children, Charlene MacKinnon (Kevin), Halifax, Natalie Paris (James), Sydney, Deanna Gallaway (Dave), Halifax, Allison Donovan (Blair), Halifax, and Michael Almond (Krista) Halifax; eight grandchildren, Julia, Sara, Clara, Jarrod, Lauren, Taylor, Bradley and Julianne and one great-grandchild, Lucas. She is also survived by a sister, Nan Murphy (Arnold); a brother, Melvin Finlayson (Pearl); several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Besides her parents and Dad, Mom was predeceased by her brother, Charlie Finlayson and grandson, Matthew Fitzgerald. Visitation for Mom will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a funeral mass Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation. We extend our sincerest thanks to Dr. Paul Murphy, Mom's family doctor for many years, and to the doctors and nurses at the QE II Hospital in Halifax who provided exceptional care to Mom during her most recent stay. Catherine Pembroke Born In: New Waterford Born: May 31st, 1931 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: November 8th, 2013 Finding her way home on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, with her loving family by her side, after an admirable struggle with cancer, our mother is now at peace with the Almighty. She was born on May 31, 1931, in New Waterford, the daughter of the late Josef Kalbhenn, a mining engineer and native of Germany and Veronica (O'Handley) originally from Glace Bay. As with many of her generation, becoming a full-time mother was her vocation and greatest achievement in life. An extremely intelligent lady, she taught her children by example as she was an avid reader, possessing a scholarly depth of knowledge in the Bible, European and North American history, and sports. It could be said that our mother had two major religious devotions; one to the Catholic Church and the other to the sport of hockey and her beloved Chicago Blackhawks. Her greatest heroes were Mother Theresa and Bobby Hull. She was also deeply devoted to Our Lady of Fatima and made the pilgrimage to Spain and Portugal in 2002, an experience she so dearly treasured; it made her glow when she spoke of it. Spreading love, warmth, food, and faith was how our mother conducted her life. Growing up, our home always smelled of homemade bread and other tasty delights; those Cape Breton winters were cold but we were kept warm by mother's knitted caps and mittens. Finding new recipes and patterns were just two of her many hobbies. Being blessed with a "green thumb," she so loved the spring and summer, as growing flowers was her specialty. With a house full of children, life was very busy and at times very tough. But she managed to find time for us all, mending our cuts and bruises as well as our broken hearts. The Golden Rule was the example we learned from. Besides love, two of the greatest gifts she gave us were our independence and our faith. She was, without a doubt, a truly holy person. As a girl, she grew up spending her summers at the ocean, as so many of us did. She loved swimming and strongly believed salt water was good for the soul. She had a passion for ice skating, as some of her fondest memories came from the winters of her youth at the old Hawk's Rink in Fourteen yard. Another favourite place of hers was her summer home in Mira, being surrounded by nature and making things grow was how she spent the latter years of her life. Catherine is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Douglas J. Pembroke who now resides at Harbourstone Guest home in Sydney. "Dotty and Dougie," a couple completely committed to one another, loved the faith and their children, as much as they loved each other. Although being blessed with such a large family it was difficult to find time for each other, but they managed to keep a date night, going to movies, concerts and local dances. She is survived by daughters, Judy (Don) Pictou, Sheila (Lawrence) New Waterford, Colleen (Edmund), Sydney, Lillian (Mike), Sydney River, Anna (David), River Ryan, Rose (Michael), River Ryan and sons, Patrick, Newfoundland, Peter (Jackie), New Waterford, Bernard, New Waterford, Paul (Tracey), New Waterford, Ryan (Sandra), Sydney River. Catherine is also survived by one brother, Aloysius (Al) Kalbhenn, New Waterford; one special nephew, loved as a brother, Joseph (Joey) Kalbhenn, Ontario; and her best friend since childhood, Sally Durando. Also left to mourn are her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved going to Granny's for treats, but most especially to hear their favourite storyteller weave a yarn as only she could. It is almost unimaginable to think we will not find you there waiting for us, Chris, Corey, Heather, Katie, Alexa, Laurie-Ann, Beth, Andrew, Jill, Jason, Lisa, Curtis, Robert, Colin, Jaclyn, Aaron, Matthew, Liam, David, Nicholas, Cara, Brett, Calvin and Amanda, great-grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah, Rylan, Gabriel, Mick, Ella, Leigha, Logan, Hector, Mason, Emma, Kaja, Mia, Hunter, Luke, Bryson, Kate and Eleanor. Besides her parents, Catherine was predeceased by her brothers, Ludwig, Joseph, John, and Augustus in infancy, nephew, Ludwig (Tully) Kalbhenn, daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Pembroke and a most beloved sister-in-law, Marie (Pembroke) Pendlebury. There will be private visitation at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home in New Waterford, and a private funeral mass at St. Leonard's Parish with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment to take place immediately afterwards at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests sending donations to the Cancer Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the Saint Vincent de Paul Society in New Waterford. Online condolences to the family can be placed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Post November 11, 2013 Saturday "Censored letters from departed relative reveal more than you might think" "Saturday, March 27, 1943. Hi Mom: Saturday night (censored) I've had a pretty easy time of it this week. We only flew one night, and that was only a (censored) trip. But if things go like I hope they will, I should be doing lots of flying soon. My skipper has been taken off our crew, and is being posted overseas (out of England), not back to Canada, but still farther away from home." This was one of several letters home written by my maternal uncle Rannie MacLean, after he had reached England in the spring of 1942. After joining the Royal Canadian Air Force, he had been trained as a Navigator/Air Gunner, and was "seconded" to the Royal Air Force Coastal Command, after he arrived in the British Isles. (The military term "seconded" refers to an individual who has been lent to another regiment, unit, or branch of service, for an open-ended period of time.) His letter continues: "At that rate it will leave me the only officer in our crew, which isn't very nice, since I wouldn't have any one to kick around with. So I'm trying to get posted with him. I'd like to stick with J. J., he's an awfully nice guy and a heck of a good pilot. I think it will work out OK, I hope. We should do much more flying out there (censored), and thus get our ( flying) hours in much quicker than here (censored), and then, too, I'd be seeing the world." This letter, and the envelope in which it was mailed, both show evidence of being heavily censored, which was common practice in all branches of the military in the Second World War. One end of the sealed letter had been opened, and resealed with white tape, after the letter inside had been censored. The censor had placed the following stamp on the sealing tape, in a bold black typeface: "EXAMINER 7129". The envelope had been addressed to my maternal grandmother: "Mrs. Hector MacLean, P.O. Box 363, North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada." (This was long before the post office offered home delivery, and long before the use of postal codes. You had to go to the post office to pick up your mail, using a key, from your private mail box.) The name of the town from which the letter was mailed had also been removed by the censor. When you look at the original letter, you can see where the censor used some type of knife, or razor blade, to cut out any reference to where my uncle was located, the name of his squadron, or where they were flying when out on patrol. His letter continues: "I haven't had a letter from you for 6 weeks now. Something must be wrong somewhere. There isn't any Canadian mail coming in at all. There should be some soon, though, I hope. How is everything going? Well, I hope. How is the (new) baby, and Mary? I'm going to have a bath, and get to bed, and get a good sleep. I'll be going to church tomorrow morning (Sunday), and then we are flying tomorrow night (censored). So, so long, for now. My regards to everybody. Love, Rannie." The next night, on 28 March, 1943, my uncle Rannie MacLean climbed on board his Wellington aircraft, and set out on an anti- submarine patrol. He never returned, and no trace was ever found of his aircraft, or any of the crew. Like so many of his fellow aircrew, he was simply "Missing in Action!" Next week: trying to find out what exactly happened on that fateful night. Rannie Gillis Rannie Gillis is an author and avid Celtic histori an whose column appears every week in the Cape Breton Post.
