Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Post November 18, 2013 Monday "Bad news war telegrams came with a clergyman" "CANADIAN PACIFIC TELEGRAPHS - World Wide Communications - Ottawa Ontario March 30 1943 1148 am Standard Time" (Notice the absence of any punctuation such as periods or commas.) It was the telegram that no Canadian family wanted to receive, but in the First and Second World Wars thousands upon thousands of such notices went out to families and individuals all across the country. However, before it was hand-delivered to a home, the telegraph operator who received the message would contact a member of the clergy, who would accompany the telegraph messenger to that particular home. The sight of a clergyman on your doorstep, with a young telegraph messenger by his side, was enough to strike the greatest fear into any individual, especially a parent. In this case the telegram, which I have on my desk as I write, was addressed to my maternal grandfather. "Hector MacLean Archibald Avenue North Sydney NS regret to inform you advice has been received from the Royal Canadian Air Force Casualties Officer Overseas that your son Pilot Officer Rannie Gabriel MacLean J two two four nine nine (his military ID number) is reported missing as the result of air operations on March twenty eighth nineteen forty three stop (the word 'stop' was used to tell the telegrapher to begin a new sentence or paragraph.) In the best interests of the possible safety of your son it is requested that you withhold any information from press or radio until his name appears in Official Casualty List five weeks hence stop letter following RCAF Casualties Officer". These telegrams were simple and to the point, unadorned by any fancy language or rhetoric. They were not signed, and did not attempt to give any explanation for what might have happened. They just stated the facts, as they were known at that time. When you consider that 44, 093 Canadians were killed in the Second World War, and at total of 66, 665 in the First World War, the Casualties Branch of the Armed Forces in Ottawa was a very busy place. In the case of my uncle Rannie, he took off for a long-range anti-submarine flight on the evening of March 28, 1943. Through extensive research I now know that the type of Vickers Wellington twin-engine bomber that he flew in had a range of more than 2,500 miles, and flew at a maximum speed of 235 miles per hour. (Quite slow by today's standards.) His type of aircraft could be on patrol for at least 10 hours and, depending on wind and weather conditions, for up to 11 or 12 hours! That means that his aircraft did not return from patrol until sometime the next day, March 29, when his aircraft would have been listed as "Missing in Action." The very next day, at 11:48 a.m. (Atlantic Time) on the morning of March 30, the above telegram was delivered to my home on Archibald Avenue, in North Sydney. Even now, after all these years, I am quite amazed with the record-keeping ability of the Canadian Armed Forces back in Second World War. And this was long before the age of high-speed computers, cell phones, or satellite communications. How did they do it? Next week: two "official" letters from the Royal Air Force in England, within one week. Rannie Gillis is an author and avid Celtic historian whose column appears every week in the Cape Breton Post. He is survived by wife Margaret (Peg); sons, Donald (Stephanie), Corey (Melissa) and four wonderful grandchildren, Megan, Lucas, Caitlin and Joseph 'JJ'; sisters, Willena (Bob) Johnson, Ontario, and Linda Arsenault, Halifax; brothers, Larry, Calgary, and George, Halifax. He was predeceased by brother Doug and sister Anne. Friends and family lost a vital life force when Jim finally succumbed to the cancer wracking his body. Those fortunate enough to have known him will have memories that will make them smile for years. His precious grandchildren for whom "Papa could fix anything!" will feel his love long after they have grown and hopefully, will pass it on to their children. Sons, Don and Corey, have realized their good fortune in having such a special and giving father which is evident when one sees them with their own children. Jim started his working career in the Bank of Nova Scotia and went on to join Revenue Canada Taxation where he did well and made many more friends. However, what our Jim liked to do best was "play". Hunting, fishing, skiing (water and snow), scuba diving, motorcycling, golfing, canoeing, ATV riding, travelling and dancing were some of his many pursuits. All were done with total enjoyment. For his wife of 44 years, Peggy he has truly been a life partner and best friend. "Nobody looks after you like I do" he was fond of saying and that is so true. We travelled a wonderful road together and I shall ever hold all my wonderful memories close, feeling him still by my side. There will be a "Celebration of Life" service at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 29 at the Centennial Legion (Branch 160), 730 Main Street (#7 Hwy.), Dartmouth. Reception to follow until 8 p.m. Internment will be private at a later date. Family flowers only. In lieu, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice. He'll wait for us in his quiet place and watch over us till we meet again.

Born in Bermondsey, London, England on June 22, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Thomas William and Marion Alice Davidson. Living in the centre of London during the horrors of the Second World War and a survivor of the London Blitz gave Mom a great tenacity in achieving life's goals and in appreciating all of the small things life can offer. While serving with the NAFFI at Salamanca Barracks in Aldershot, England, Mom met and married her Canadian soldier. A war-bride, she travelled aboard the Mauritania and arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax in 1946. From city life in London to rural solitude in South Harbour, Cape Breton, Beatrice started her family with her loving husband, Kendrick. A significant portion of the next seven decades was spent in South Harbour (mom's Canadian home) with the remainder of her time spent in various towns and cities in Ontario. Like many of her generation she spent her time blessing the lives of her family and many friends. Mom had an incredible memory and could easily recall names of persons met, even if only briefly and could as easily recall names of their partners and children. Mom took great joy in talking to each of her friends and in sharing their joys and sorrows. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Kendrick, her sisters, Marie, Irene, Dorothy and brothers, Tom, Roy and Ronald. She is survived by her brother, Don Davidson, England; her sister-in-law, Susie MacIntosh of Kingston, Ont.; her daughter, Linda (Gilbert Labelle); sons, Ron (Carol), Derek, (Karen), all of Ottawa, Keith (Lorraine), South Harbour, N.S., and Chris (Mel) Halifax, N.S. Beatrice will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends throughout Canada, England, Belgium, France and the U.S. With many thanks to the residents and staff at Bridlewood Trails Retirement Home who made her last five years memorable and happy. Also thanks to the staff of 4 East and 3 North at St. Vincent hospital not only for their care, but also for their compassion. A special thanks to Dr. Nicole Dunlop and Chaplin Marie Bachman. Any Carey researchers on the list with data on Cape Breton family. My Great Grandmother was Ellen Carey d/o William Carey and Elizabeth Ball who lived in New Campbellton, CB. I know William's father was William also as they are referred to in documents as William Sr and William Jr but not 100% sure of his Mother's name. Have some unconfirmed information to say is was Susanna McConnel but nothing of fact. Haven't been able to connect too many dots in this older line of my family. Anyone on list have sourced data on William Sr and his wife/family? Also interested in knowing William Sr's parents name and where they came from. As always, list assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Thom in CB
