Philippe Mius d'Azy b. 1660 Pobomcoup, Cape Sable, NS was married to a Marie (no last name). It has been suggested that Marie was Amerindian. Does anyone on the list know if that is factual by source data? They are in my family line and I would like to confirm/deny this data item. As always, thanks in advance. Thom
William Quinn was the son of James Quinn and Mary Cathcart. Susan was the daughter of Michael Murphy and Catherine Shaugnessey. William and Susan separated and she moved to Pawtucket, Rhode Island with the children sometime before 1900. I have not confirmed whether Patrick Murphy and Susan Murphy were siblings. Born in Sydney on Aug. 3, 1940, Angus was the son of the late D.J. and Ethel (Musgrave) MacIntyre. Angus did so much for family, friends and community. He was a true role model. He was an experienced human relations trainer who worked and volunteered with numerous groups and non profit organization. He was active in civil rights movements throughout Canada and the US. Author of two books, with more wisdom left unwritten. Angus's commitment to lifelong education helped him earn his BA from Notre Dame and obtain his Masters in Adult Education from Saint Francis Xavier. He is also a graduate of the Coady International Institute. He was a lifelong student who supported and encouraged others to pursue their own personal learning journeys with unconditional support. His passions included fiddling and golfing with his buddies, especially Albert. His desire was always to enter into discussions with his children and others, whenever the occasion arose or could be created. His intention was to stimulate thinking on any particular subject of mutual interest. Through these interactions, many colourful stories arose and were retold with humour whether you had heard them already or not. A man who really knew what mattered in life; his time. He was always there when someone needed him and you knew you held his full attention. Till the end, he could still be overheard planning what golfing game, job, exciting workshop or community activity he would facilitate always doing so with that smile on his face. You are no longer physically present in our lives, but in our hearts you'll always be there. Angus is survived by his wife of 48 years, Julie; children, Dawn Michelle, Ann Marie, Dan, and Jim (Colleen); grandchildren, Krista (Matt), Thomas (Melissa), Danielle (Kristen), Richelle (Steve), Keagan, Angus, Luke, Keesyk and Keevenie; great-grandchildren, Phoenix, Max and Emma; brothers, Lorne, Carl, Charlie and Alex; and a list of other family members too numerous to mention, including pride in his godchildren. Mullins started his working career at an early age of 9 years old, working heavy horses on construction of the Georges River Road. He was employed at Fairhome Farm for a short time during the summer, the Bras d'Or Coal Company and Marine Atlantic, but his true passion was farming. Cape Breton Post January 11, 2014 Saturday A voice from the past Letter written by Alberta woman 94 years ago returned CALGARY — A yellowed letter that turned up in an antique trunk halfway around the world is giving people in a small Alberta town a glimpse at what post-war Prairie life was like nearly a century ago. (photo of letter not included with this message) THE CANADIAN PRESS Part of a letter penned on letterhead from Vulcan, Alta., in 1919 is shown here. The letter remained hidden away in a trunk for 94 years and was returned to the writer’s family. Violet Collier penned the correspondence on Nov. 15, 1919 — shortly after the First World War — on letterhead from the Vulcan Supply Co. in the town of Vulcan, southeast of Calgary. The letter remained hidden away in a traveller’s trunk for 94 years until a man named Tim Lacey bought the trunk in Balaklava, Australia, a few years ago. When he finally got a chance to go through it, he found the letter, looked up Vulcan on the map and shipped the missive back. “It does not seem as though things will ever be the same again, since this war, everything here is upside down with strikes, the United States is in a dreadful state,” the letter reads. “Serves them right though they are always saying ’How they won the war,’ running down other ’ Nations,’ thinking they rule the world, you should feel thankful you have not got them as neighbours.” Collier goes on about the weather at the time. “We have had a very dry year (the 3rd) again, it’s making things bad. An early winter has set in since October 15 we have had 2 feet of snow on the ground... cattle are dying for want of feed, hay is an awful price, can scarcely be got. Government is talking of helping out more than has been.” The letter is addressed only to a Miss Scholz. The writer’s grandson, Dave Collier, was a bit surprised at the tone of the letter, which he said shows a different side of his grandmother who died when he was 19. “The letter kind of seems out of character because she is so obviously respectful and like ful of this person she was writing to,” said Collier, 70, who still lives in Vulcan. “She was very chatty and was not to my knowledge ... like that at all with any of us. She was a very nice lady but totally reserved. “I never had a real conversation with her about anything.” Collier said his grandmother would have been in her late 20s when she wrote the letter. He said she was born in Tasmania and lost her parents when she was nine years old. She was taken in by other relatives and went to school in New Zealand, Australia and England. “This was a person she either went to school with or a relative she lived with — obviously somebody she had grown quite close to.” Collier said his grandparents met briefly in England before his grandmother came to Canada in 1908 in what he suggested was probably an arranged marriage. It’s believed the strike Collier was referring to included the six-week long Winnipeg General Strike of June 1919. She also recounted seeing the future King of England, Edward VIII, during his trip to Alberta in September 1919. King Edward would abdicate the throne when he married American divorcee Wallis Simpson. “We have had the ’ Prince of Wales’ out here, we drove 95 miles by auto to see him, had a dandy view, he is such a nice open faced boy everybody is in love with him.” Jonathan Allan, economic development officer for the Vulcan Business Development Society, said Collier’s family is still in the area and her grandson, Dave, has been informed about the find. “I found it to be just fascinating. I spoke with the grandson of the author of the letter and they had apparently just moved to Canada a year or two earlier. He did mention she went to school in both New Zealand and Australia before she was married.” Allan said he was excited when Lacey reached out to them. “I was blown away with just the interesting elements of it considering it was written in 1919. And of course reading about the Winnipeg General Strike and also the view of the Americans.” Collier also made mention of the entertainment available in the small town as winter descended. “Games on the ice is the order of the day out here now, ’Curling,’ ’Hockey’ and Skating.” The letter has been offered to the family but Collier said it will be placed in the Vulcan museum.

Thom I've been looking at your Quinn-Murphy question and here is a summary of what I found: William Quinn married Susan Murphy nov 1869 -Sydney four children - Elizabeth, James, Mary and Barnaby born 1870 - 1877 the marriage record identifies he as from Lingan, she from Georges River Annie Quinn married Patrick Murphy nov 1884 - Sydney three children - Ellen, Bridget Irene and Catherine born 1885 - 1895 the marriage record identifies he as from Georges River, she from Lingan the death record (1948) also identifies her parents as below = reported by daughter Irene Wilson the death record of Wm has him the son of James Quinn and Mary Cathcart and he died 1928 in Sydney River. In the 1911 Census for Cape Breton/North Victoria/Georges River line 34 there is a Pat Murphy and his wife Annie with two children and a Wm Quinn (brother-in-law) living with them. Anyone have any idea who this William Quinn might be or his ancestry? I am a Quinn researcher and there is no William Quinn in my lines, that I have found, with a brother-in-law last name Murphy? Thanks as always for your assistance. Thom

Until we meet again. MacNEIL Daniel Basil MacNeil, age 87, of Mabou passed away on Friday, Jan. 3rd, 2014, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Daniel completed a life of selfless dedication and devotion to his family, his faith and his community. He was an advocate for all things Mabou and championed the community at every turn. Daniel was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, and prayer was paramount in his life. Born on June 14th, 1926, he was the second youngest of 11 children in the family of Dr. Alex J. and Elizabeth Ann (MacNeil) MacNeil. Daniel’s birthday doubled as the anniversary date of his marriage to Margaret Helen (MacIntyre), who died in 2005 in their 50th-anniversary year. Daniel is survived by his seven children: Eric, Harold (Jo-Ann Rankin), Rod, Janet (Neil MacIsaac), John, Ann Marie (Tommy Chisholm) and Michael; his 12 grandchildren: Rae, Erin and Beth MacNeil, Carissa, Erica and Daniel MacIsaac, and Tara, Ashley, Siobhan, Meghan, Mark and Siona Chisholm; his brother, Stanley, his sister, Teresa Doyle, his sisters-in-law, Catherine MacNeil and Flora MacLellan; and his brother-in-law, Malcolm Parker, along with 27 nieces and nephews. Along with his parents and his wife, Daniel was predeceased by eight siblings: brothers Alexander, John, Donnie and Francis; and sisters Anna, Mary, Kaye and Marguerite; nephew Dougie MacCallum and niece Sandra MacNeil. Daniel lived a complete and balanced life centered around family, church and community. He learned the value of hard work at a young age and practised those traits as a truck contractor, a bus driver and as a longtime caretaker at St. Joseph’s Convent. For decades, he was an active proponent of Mabou as a hands-on community leader. He played a leading role in the construction of the pioneering Mabou Athletic Centre, an inspiration for similar facilities elsewhere in the county and beyond. He promoted the rink tirelessly, creating teams and leagues at every level and making the arena truly a community centre. Fittingly, his family’s property always sported a backyard rink, which was a haven for not only his own children, but also relatives, neighbours and members of the many large families that populated Mabou at the time. In similar fashion, he introduced many Mabou-and-area youth to Little League baseball, and he was a fixture each year running the horseshoe tournament at the Mabou Ceilidh. He was an active charter member of parish, co-op, credit union and community development committees, sports groups and the fire department. As a coach and bus driver for many years, he knew generations of past and present Mabou residents, many of whom thanked him and reminisced about those cherished days in recent years, often while Daniel was on his daily walks on the main street of Mabou. In retirement, he continued to enjoy county events and road trips, often in the company of his siblings Stanley and Teresa. He reached the end of a life journey that in the early years included trips with his father, a country doctor, throughout Cape Breton. Daniel earned and gave respect in his humble way. He was an avid news follower and storyteller who liked to inject humour and a fiddle tune along the way. He was a friend to many, and many will remember him. Visitation was held at St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, on Tuesday, Jan. 7th. Daniel’s funeral is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary’s Church, with Father Angus Morris officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Mabou. On-line condolences can be sent to www.invernessfuneralhome.com. She was the daughter of the late Stephen John and Kathleen MacNeil. She was predeceased by her husband, Archie, her parents, and her siblings, Buddy MacNeil and Kaye MacNeil. She is survived by her half brother John MacNeil, Sydney Mines, N.S.; her half sister Mary MacInnis, London, Ont.; her children Darlene (Gerard), Beverly, Karen, Daniel (Frances), Jeanette (Paul). Grandchildren, Malcolm, Lyndsay, Jenny, Joshua, Brianna, Nathan, Ben and Patrick, Marie’s ‘Gaelic grandson’, also survive Marie. Marie was passionate about her culture, faith, community and family. She was active in the Holy Rosary Altar Society, Home and School and was a willing volunteer to assist in community functions. Marie was fluent in the Gaelic language and was a fervent supporter of keeping the language alive. She communicated with her peers in the community teaching and always learning the subtle intricacies of the language and she continued teaching interested young people. Marie enjoyed the company of others and was humbled and honored, to have been considered a friend by many. If Marie had a Facebook profile, she would have still been accepting friend requests. Marie worked at a number of jobs through her life, most of which exacted a physical toll from the labor involved. She would not have given up any of those opportunities as each one opened the world to her in a different way. Marie and Archie’s place in Washabuck always had an open door with Marie the primary entertainment coordinator and welcoming committee. People could be expected to drop in day or night for a visit, a game of crib, darts or just grilled cheese sandwiches. Age appropriate lunches, tea and libations were always on hand. Marie also provided free advice whether you wanted it or not. If the topic was brought up it meant there was an opportunity to offer insight. Many new babies were wrapped in the finely knitted baby blankets borne from Marie’s arthritic hands. All God’s creatures ... Marie loved most of them. From kind words and treats for the little birds, cats and dogs, to encouragement for Cobas’ and Bessie, the milk cows, coming in from the pasture and the outright awe and admiration for the noble steeds of Spruce Meadows and the hay fields. Marie was strong to the end and left on a high after winning two games of crib against Karen just prior to her death. Foul play has been ruled out on this one. Marie was cool before cool was cool. It wasn’t so much how she was doing, but how you were doing which was important to Marie. A visitation will be held at the Iona Hall Friday, Jan. 10 from 5-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Columba Church, Iona, with Father Paul Abbass officiating. Marie’s family will receive friends at a luncheon to be held at the Washabuck Community Center after the graveside service. Funeral arrangements are under the care of MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck. “S’ith is Fois dha h-Anam” Peace and rest to her soul.
