Thomas McMullin Born: February 16th, 1931 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 31st, 2014 It is with deep sadness, I announce the passing of my Dad, Thomas McMullin peacefully on Jan. 31, 2014 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Tom was born on Feb. 16, 1931 the fifth child and second son of the late William and Caroline McMullin. He grew up in Reserve Mines part of a family of eight. Like many of his brothers and sisters, Tom learned to make music for entertainment; he played the guitar and fiddle, but favoured the piano and became masterful at it. As a young boy living near the airport his eye’s turned skyward and he developed a lifetime love of aviation which he passed on to me. Tom learned to fly in 1951 becoming a flight instructor and eventually flew DC-3’s for Nordair. In 1959 he married his childhood sweetheart, Carmen (Botte) McMullin who remained his loving and faithful wife until she predeceased him just three months ago. To avoid the travel and settle down in Sydney, Tom moved into air traffic control in the early 60s. He continued to teach flying for years after that in Sydney. In 1964 they adopted their only child, (Me), Glenn McMullin. Tom was the greatest father a boy could hope to have. He was a quiet stoic and strong personality who was very humble and did not like attention or recognition. Tom loved family, friends and a good party and hosted many gatherings at their house. Tom was an intellectual, very well read with many talents, many of which we would have to discover by accident. For example once I could not find the illustration needed for a school report so Dad drew a picture to the desired specifications in pencil and it could have easily hung in a gallery. Even Mom was surprised and when asked where he learned to do tha! t he said simply, “I liked to draw as a boy.” He never spoke of it again. Tom liked many kinds of music but favored the classics and would spend hours in the basement playing them on the piano. Tom was a man of few words and led by example, the epitome of a loyal loving family man who everyone could always count on when help was needed. Left to miss him along with me are my wife, Samantha and daughter, Rebecca, who he always asked about first, also his sister, Margaret ‘Peggy’ Petrie of Toronto. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Along with his wife and parents Tom was predeceased by his brothers, Francis, Joe and Elmer McMullin and his sisters, Mary, Betty and Josephine. He dearly missed them all and spoke of them often. I would like to thank Dr. Steven MacDougall and Dr. Susan McLeod for their wonderful care over the years. Also thank you to Dr. Ann Francis D’Intino for her special care in the final weeks. The staff of CBRH floor 4B and 4E that provided my Dad so much comfort in his final days. A special thanks to cousins, Greg and Donna Botte for their time and help with Dad over the years and especially at this difficult time and also my cousin, Bill Buckland, for being there whenever we needed help. I would like to extend thanks to Charlene MacDonald of Continuing Care as well as management and staff of County Homemakers for the amazing care they provided Dad in the last few years. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Tom’s life will be held at TW Curry’s Parkview Chapel on Feb 4th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Private interment will take place at a later date. 3. The 700 ton Barque Tamerlane departed Greenock Scotland on June 10, 1826 for Sydney. Arriving at Sydney late July, Early August of that year passengers with surnames such as Gillis, MacLellan, MacDonnell, MacDonald, MacEachern and MacDougall debarked at Sydney. Most of these people settled at SW Margaree or in the Mira Area. After making port at Sydney the Tamerlane continued on her way making port on August 4, 1826 at Quebec where another 55 Highland settlers debarked and settled at Glengarry Ontario. I am trying to put together a passenger list for the Tamerlane and would like to hear back from anyone whose ancestors landed in the year 1826. My hope is that I may be able to unravel possible family connections using the names of the ships passengers.RegardsJ.R. Reid

Joan was the youngest daughter of the late Thomas and Madge (Boland) O'Day. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mom was born and lived her entire life in Whitney Pier. She was a life-long member of Holy Redeemer Parish, where for years she was a member of the senior folk choir. After graduating from Holy Redeemer Girls' School, Mom married Dad and raised her family. She later worked at Zellers and finally went on to work as switchboard operator at Sydney City Hospital/Cape Breton Regional Hospital until her retirement in 1997. Her quick wit, dry sense of humor and warm personality drew people to her, as she was fun and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Mom loved her work at the switchboard at the old City Hospital and made many life-long friends there whom she cherished. Mom's true joy in life was spending her summers at "the bungalow" at Johnston's Harbour. This is where Mom was most happy with all her family around, sharing card games (which she usually won), teaching her grandchildren the skills of rummy and scat, and where everyone gathered for music and fun memories. How she loved to dance! Mom was a book-worm in every sense of the word and enjoyed reading immensely, soaking up books of every sort, and she passed this love of reading on to her children and grandchildren. Mom was an incredible cook, famous for her awesome cabbage rolls, and always made sure to have a "stash" of treats for the kids. She was a creative person who loved sewing and art and encouraged this in her family. Nan loved new technology and kept in touch with her grandchildren via MSN and Facebook. No one could set up the satellite control and remote quite like her! Mom was absolutely devoted to her family and making sure everyone's needs were met. No matter the circumstances, Mom always had a smile and warm words of love. In her gentle wisdom, Mom guided all of us through our difficult times, believed in us, and made everyone feel special and loved. She always listened, encouraged, advised, and taught us that you can be strong yet gentle. Mom strongly believed that children were a gift to be loved and cherished. She was even considered a second "mum" by many of her children's friends, and even to her grandchildren's friends. The most important things to her were to treat others as you want to be treated, forgiveness, and respect. She was a woman of strong faith and believed in the power of prayer and love. Mom's hugs were the warmest; her kisses the gentlest; she was simply the best. We'll carry the many wonderful memories of her with us, and her message to live life full of "love, love, love". Mom is survived by daughters, Joan (Murray) Dingwall, Sharon (Rick) Tubrett, Kathy (Marty) Kolanko, Betty-Anne (Steve) MacPhee; son, John and grandchildren, Jenifer (Roy) Dingwall-MacDonald, Emily Dingwall (Jen White), Gina (Chris) Tubrett Crawley, Richard (Jana) Tubrett, Matthew Tubrett, Natasha Kolanko and Ellen, Andrew, and Joanna MacPhee. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Madilynn Crawley, Jack Tubrett, Mason and Jesse MacDonald; her sisters-in-law, Catherine Orychock, Visia MacNeil and Ann MacNeil, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Joseph (Dewey); her sisters, Margaret (Reginald) Donovan, Letty (Les) Young; and her brother, Tom (Eileen) O'Day. Ferman was born on June 13, 1965, son of the late Ferman Furey Sr. and Shirley (Arseneau) Furey. He was an avid craftsman/carpenter and took great pride in everything he created. At the time of his diagnosis, he was employed at Meco Construction as a carpenter. He always enjoyed working with wood. He was a very outgoing, dedicated, and caring guy. Ferman would do anything and everything for anyone. He wouldn’t care if he had a penny in his pocket; he would selflessly jump in and make sure things were taken care of. He was a member of the Tower Road Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years, and held the position of deputy fire chief at the time of his death. One of his greatest achievements was saving a man’s life from a house fire while he was off duty for which he received the Governor General of Canada’s Commendation award for bravery. His response was “It’s a little overwhelming”. In 1998-99 he was selected Fire Fighter of the Year at Tower Road. He was a very humble and modest man. He was a jack-of-all-trades. He was their cook, DJ, bartender, sign maker, carpenter, maintenance person, tour guide, and trainer, but most importantly was the ability to save lives and be a dedicated firefighter. He was so proud to be a part of all this! Besides his mother, Shirley, he is survived by his only sister, Annette (Malcolm) Taylor of Oromocto, N.B.; his soulmate, Andrea Langille and two beautiful daughters, Joehanna Ward and Samantha Ward. It is with regret, his children were not able to be with their loving Dad in his hour of need. Our hearts are broken. The family would like to extend thanks to all friends and family, whose love and endless support made dark days a little brighter. To the nurses, VON, Doctors, Palliative Care, and Red Cross, whose care and compassion made living with and treating the illness a little easier. They helped make Ferman’s wish to spend his final days in his home, with his family, a reality. A wake will be held on Friday, Jan. 31 from 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, Union Street, Glace Bay. There will be a funeral mass held Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Main Street, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. The mass will include all Fireman honours. Footprints One night I had a dream... I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and across the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to me, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of my life flashed before us, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life. This really bothered me, and I questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way; but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why in times when I needed you the most, you should leave me. The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child. I love you, and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you. Whatever we were to each, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, Speak it to me in the same way you always used. Put no difference into your tone, Wear no false air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect, without the ghost of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolutely unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident. I am but waiting for you for an interval Somewhere very near Just around the corner. All is well. Born in North Sydney, where he resided with his wife of 52 years Linda. He was known by many as a man of many words and never passed up an opportunity to make someone laugh with his own brand of quick wit and humour. Joe also spent time painting scenes that we will cherish and display in our home with a fondness more dear than yesterday. Today's paper has Funeral arrangements (unable to view paper today) Helen Thompson 2013-10-19 99, Indian Brook, Cabot Trail On Oct. 19, 2013, Helen Louise Thompson peacefully left us to illuminate some other world. Her crochet hook is back in its case, car keys on the wall, and credit card quiet in her billfold. Buoyed by community, friends, and family, both near and far, Helen's life was filled with determination and love. Born on Sept. 26, 1914, into a closely knit family, Helen was the daughter of the late Royal and Edna Andrews of Marion, Ohio, and older sister to Marnie and Katy. Helen began driving at the age of 13, apprenticed to a seamstress after graduating from high school, and then went into nurses' training in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated and began nursing in 1939 as supervisor in surgery. Later Helen shifted to industry, providing nursing and a sympathetic ear to workers at a steel plant and at Universal Cooler, where she met and married Bonar Thompson when he returned from the U.S. Navy after the war. When Helen was 40, Bonar persuaded her to leave Ohio and help him establish a roofing-and-siding business in his birth province of New Brunswick. They hauled a 30-foot mobile home across the country, and Helen jumped out to stop traffic as they crossed bridges. In Canada she bonded with her in-laws, and made a beautiful home in Moncton, overlooking the Petitcodiac River. She was a lifelong member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Nicknamed "The Roadrunner" by the boy next door, Helen shopped, went to meetings, gardened, sewed, and directed Thompson Bros. Ltd. workmen in New Brunswick and Labrador. She drove to Ohio twice a year, to Florida, to British Columbia, to Maine for truckloads of asbestos shingles. Helen always had a kind ear for friends, and she made a friend of everyone she met. When Bonar died in 1974, Helen closed down the business, worked as secretary to two ministers, and traveled. In 1987 she bought property in Indian Brook, Cape Breton, to be near her daughter, moving here permanently in 1993. Always instructed and comforted by her faith, she was a member of St. Ann's Bay United Church, and was vastly supported by her church family, Bonnie's work family (Ron Caplan and Sharon Irwin), our community, and Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Hospice Society, and Continuing Care. Besides her husband and parents, Helen was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Swann and Kathryn Apt, daughter-in-law, Gay Thompson and grandson, Wayne, brothers-in-law, Paul Groves, Lyle Swann, Rob Roy Apt, Arnold McWilliam and Robert, Gordon, George, Frank and Earl Thompson, sisters-in-law, Doris, Esther, Rhoda, and Kathryn Thompson and Margaret McWilliam, sister-in-law and special friend, Elnor Thompson, and many good friends. Helen is survived by her daughter, Bonnie; son, Richard; grandsons, Seth and Lloyd; sister-in-law, Muriel Thompson; special nieces, Karen (Jim) Kozlowski and Marion Thompson (John Roberts) and family; beloved caregivers, Gloria Mauger and Grace Ann MacDermid, and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends old and new and old and young! One could say that the themes of Helen's life are: Driving, and Friendship, and Work - in about that order! A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Helen Thompson will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Helen may be made to a charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
