He was born and raised in Dingwall, where he resided most of his life, having left for only a short period of time, residing in Dartmouth and Ontario. In his younger years, Stephen was an avid boxer with a very impressive record in the ring. However, his career in boxing was cut short due to a car accident which left him paralyzed. He was told that he would never walk again but with the heart and determination of a boxer he did walk again without assistance, although later in life he was once again confined to a wheelchair. Stephen never lost his love for boxing and over the years he trained many young men, and women from Dingwall and surrounding arrears. He was recognized by the Nova Scotia Boxing Association and invited to many of their events. As a young man Stephen met and married the love of his life, Carolyn Fraser. He was a die hard Habs fan, and no one could win an argument with him dealing with politics. Stephen also had a great love for traditional music and was especially fond of listening to laments played on fiddle and highland bagpipes. Everyone knew Stephen in the small community of Dingwall and helped him out many times. We know he would like to say thank you, especially to his ‘Buddies’. There was also another side to Stephen: his strong faith and knowledge of scripture. It was rare for him to miss watching mass on TV. It was his strong faith that seen him through many hardships. Stephen is survived by three sisters and one brother; Pauline Chubbs, Dingwall; Christena Lewis, Edwardsville; Ruth Brock, Ontario and Alex (Shirley) MacEachern, Baddeck; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Stephen was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn (Fraser) MacEachern; parents, Augustine and Maggie MacEachern; sisters, Kay Dunphy, Jessie Fitzgerald; brothers, John William, Archie, Douglas, Russell, Michael and Dukie MacEachern. We would like to extend sincere thanks to all home care workers. Visitation for the late Mr. MacEachern will take place at St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 2 p.m. with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.fillmoreandwhitman.com. “Lord Jesus, of you I will sing as I journey.” Charles Moore Born In: Sydney Born: January 11th, 1951 It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of a loving soul mate, devoted father, doting Grampy, and faithful brother, Charles Moore. Born in Sydney, Jan. 11, 1951, he was the son of the late Fred and Irene (Sheppard) Moore. Charlie passed away at the Toronto General Hospital while awaiting a lifesaving lung transplant for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Although our miracle was not to be, he never gave up his valiant fight to the very end. In his earlier years, he was a member of the LIU, Local 1115, working on many construction projects in the Cape Breton area prior to relocating to Ottawa where he was employed until he retired in 2012 due to ill health. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who took great enjoyment in life’s simpler pleasures, displayed great pride in his building projects, was an accomplished cook, but lived to tease his grandchildren. No problem was ever too big or too small for him to solve and his advice was dispensed with great modesty. Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 40 years, Kenna (MacLeod); his son, Jason (Sophie Lafontaine), Ottawa; daughter, Jennifer (Sean) Forrester, Oshawa, and his 10 grandchildren who, to him, were his pots of gold at the end of the rainbow — Brian, Bailey, Devon, Anabelle, Jordan, Calum, Sam, Teagan, Owen and Charlie. He is also survived by sisters, Christine (John) White, U.K., Donna (John) Landry, Nancy (Jackie) Polegato; brothers, Wayne (Shirley), George (Lorraine); sister-in-law, Marilyn and by numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Walter. He will be missed by his faithful companion, Maggie. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 with visitation from 1-3 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, Alexandra Street, with a memorial service immediately following. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation, Lung Transplant Program, R. Fraser Elliott Building, 190 Elizabeth St., 5th Floor, Toronto, Ont., M5G 2C4, or the Lung Association of N.S., 6331 Lady Hammond Road, Suite 200, Halifax, N.S., B3K 2S2. "Grief never ends, but it changes. It’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith ... It is the price of love." Online condolences may be sent to our web page at www.chantfuneralhome.com.

    1. [NS-CB] Friends and colleagues remember former police chief Richard (Boots) Walsh
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Cape Breton Post February 11, 2014 Tuesday BY CHRIS SHANNON [email protected] ‘He was a man you could trust’ Friends and colleagues remember former police chief Richard (Boots) Walsh SYDNEY — Friends and colleagues of former Sydney police chief Richard (Boots) Walsh are remembering the man as a hard-working policeman who held the respect of those in his company, whether it was as a constable walking the beat or as the president of the Atlantic Association of Chiefs of Police. Walsh, who was born and raised in Whitney Pier, died Friday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 81. He served as Sydney’s chief of police for 10 years beginning in 1985. It was during this time that Walsh served as president of both the Nova Scotia Association of Chiefs of Police and Atlantic Association of Chiefs of Police. His career in the Sydney police force began in May 1954. Coun. Jim MacLeod, who represents District 12 in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, has fond memories of Walsh while MacLeod served as a City of Sydney alderman. “I’ve always known him as Boots, even when I was a young fella hanging up on Charlotte Street,” said MacLeod, who served a couple stints as chair of the police commission while Walsh was chief. “Boots was a fellow who was always a friend to everybody and he was a man you could trust. As he grew older and moved up (in the police ranks), he took that honesty and credibility with him.” Early on in his career, Walsh served as one of two motorcycle cops on the force. MacLeod said he was a very fair police officer but also “strong and stringent” when it was needed. Cape Breton Regional Police Chief Peter McIsaac didn’t have an opportunity to work with Walsh since he served on the former town of New Waterford police force. McIsaac said he got to know Walsh later in his life through professional circles. “He was an unbelievable family man,” he said. “If you looked up the word ‘gentleman’ in the dictionary, you’d find a picture of Richard Walsh there. He was just a soft-spoken, respectful man.” McIsaac said the first time he met him was during a meeting in Walsh’s office to discuss a crime prevention program with officers from the various local forces. McIsaac was a constable with the New Waterford force at the time. Walsh had the ability to put others at ease, he said. “It’s not too often as a young constable you’d be in the chief ’s office, especially from another jurisdiction. “He just treated me so well, that it kind of set the stage ( for my career) because he treated me so well.” Walsh is survived by his wife Alice, as well as five children and nine grandchildren. A funeral for Walsh will be held at 11 a.m. today at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating.

He spent many years working with the race horses at the Pinehurst Driving and Training Club and has many friends who reside in the PInehurst area. Lowell Britten Born In: Arichat Passed in: Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: February 3rd, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our loving father, grandfather, brother and friend to many, Lowell J. Britten, 56, on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, in Bridgewater, N.S. Born in Arichat, Cape Breton, Lowell was the son of the late Lloyd and Mathilda (LeJeune) Britten of Sydney. He is survived by his daughter, Sherri (Mike) Bennett and his only grandchild, Tristan of Lingan, N.S.; brothers, Mike (Valerie), Big Pond, N.S., Matt (Shelley), Bridgewater, N.S., and Frank (Carol Ann), New Market, N.B.; very special friend, Monique Gaudet of Bridgewater; many nieces and nephews. Lowell was a graduate of Riverview Rural High School and had obtained his degree of physical education from ST. FX University in 1979. He was retired from a career with Hostess Frito-Lay where he was employed for over 30 years, serving areas including much of industrial Cape Breton, the Highalnds, Truro, Halifax, and Bridgewater. Lowell loved anything to do with the great outdoors and riding, but his pride and joy was Sherri. Lowell was a great dad to Sherri and was most proud of her and his “little man” Tristan. Whether it was hunting with Jim in Iona, not catching partridge with Frank in N.B., mackeral fishing off any available wharf, storm chasing across the Valley and South Shore, or exploring country roads with his camera, Lowell was always enjoying these moments with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Lowell appreciated the small things in life; family, freedom, and the adventure of exploring. A great friend, an excellent driver, and an avid biker, Lowell’s passion was his motorcycle and he used it to explore. There was no road not worth wandering or place too secluded. He was always up for an adventure to make special memories with family and friends. He was a natural biker, a great teacher, and the best “Uncle Duck” anyone could have. He was a source of strength and support for many, a friend that will be missed and valued by all. Lowell was taken far too early, but we are grateful for his life, his love, and his memory. “I love you Daddy”. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford on Friday, Feb. 7 from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Jospeh Cemetery, Lingan, with a luncheon to follow at Lingan Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.

Our John had also been suffering from schizophrenia for nearly three decades. Before John became ill, he led a wonderful life doing what he loved, playing guitar, writing songs and enjoying life.
