SHANNON It is with profound sadness and heartbreak we announce the passing of our wonderful, caring mother, grandmother, sister and lifelong soul mate, Ruth Elaine Shannon, 70, on February 23rd, 2014. She passed away peacefully with her children and husband by her side, at her home and most cherished place, Shannara, in Long Point, Nova Scotia. “Ruthie,” as she was affectionately known, was born in Whitney Pier on March 26th, 1943. Her birthmother Mary (McDonald) Cameron passed away when she was only 2 years old. Her father, the late Nevin Cameron (1965), whom she greatly loved and admired, remarried Christina Mae Cameron, who raised her and remained a great and warming influence in her life until she passed in 2005. She was loved and respected by all those who knew her. She left a lifelong impression with just one encounter with her genuine warmth and smile. She was as comfortable at Rideau Hall as she was with her hands full of soil in her garden at Shannara. She was always the classiest lady in the room, her style and grace only being outdone by her ability to make those around her feel comfortable and welcomed. More than anything else, she dedicated her life to her family. She epitomized the saying, “Behind every great man stands a great woman.” She was a dedicated and caring wife to Joseph Shannon who together built a strong and loving family. Her children, Joel, Mark (Patti), Bruce, Jennifer (Joe) White and Jason (Kari), adored everything about her, and her memories will be with them forever. She was the type of mother who loved her children equally and unequivocally. She provided her family with storybook summers at Long Point with countless visits from friends and relatives all summer long, playing games, eating fresh vegetables from her garden and sipping hot chocolate into the late evenings, ensuring everyone wanted for nothing despite having no electricity or running water. She loved her grandchildren as if they were her own children. Jessica, Samantha, Kristina, Cameron, Daniel, Mathew, Joseph, Marcus, Ryan, Jarrett, Sarah, Emily, Julia and Gregory have all been blessed with her influence, and they will never forget her generosity and their wonderful times with her at Shannara. She is also survived by her siblings, Helen Munro and Rev. Ronald (Jean) Cameron. She was predeceased by her three sisters, Margie (Henry) Mackenzie, Evelyn Wood and Marie MacLeod, and her brother Buddy Cameron. Over the years she was supported wonderfully by her physicians, surgeons and nurses. It seemed like she was always the most popular patient in care as they seemed to learn as much from her as she from them. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Arthritis Society. Visitation was held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury, on Friday, February 28th, 2014. A celebration of Ruth’s life was held at the Judique Community Centre on Saturday, March 1st at 11:30 a.m. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com. Marjorie was very passionate about her baking, hunting and trout fishing. She loved going for drives with her husband Neddie looking for treasures at yard sales. She loved to laugh, loved her mi-carême mask making. Marjorie and Ned always made sure that they were home in time for bingo. I have a copy of a poem entitled "Stanzas Composed on the ?Death of Miss S. Campbell". It is printed on silk or some such soft material and was kept in a MacAulay Family Bible from Kennington Cove near Louisbourg. At the end of the poem are the initials "P.S." followed by these words: "St. John's Nfld March 31st, 1842" I don't know if that is the date the poem was written or the date that Miss S. Campbell died. Does anyone have any idea as to who Miss S. Campbell might be? And who "P.S." might be? Thanks John A C Wilson

Marilyn Morrison (Sobol) Born In: Sydney Born: September 7th, 1941 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 25th, 2014 Marilyn Jane (Sobol) Morrison passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, 2014, surrounded by the memories and people she loved. Marilyn approached her 18-year cancer battle and her death with the same independence, determination, courage and strength that she lived her life. Marilyn was born in Sydney on Sept. 7, 1941, where she grew up cherishing, her strong Polish community and culture. She was the daughter of the late Stella (Paruch) and Joe Sobol of Wesley Street. Marilyn's vocation was teaching and she exhibited that gift in every aspect of her life. She graduated from Normal College in 1959, and began her first teaching job in the community in which she was raised-Villanova School, Whitney Pier. Her teaching career spanned over 35 years until her retirement from Holy Angels High School. Marilyn was a strong advocate of lifelong learning and over the years continued to enhance her teaching skills through various programs and courses affiliated with CBU. This belief in continued learning, as well as her drive to excel, formed the foundation of Marilyn’s strong work ethic. It was important to Marilyn to instill this in her younger siblings, children and grandchildren. Marilyn married the love of her life, John in 1964, and together they raised four daughters on Cartier Street in the house that John helped build. Family life was everything to John and Marilyn and they enjoyed wonderful summers with their girls in Middle Cape. After John’s passing, Marilyn sought solace in this beautiful part of Cape Breton Island. There, she loved nothing more than to watch her grandchildren learn to swim in the waters of the Bras d’Or, spend warm evenings playing “spotlight”, building bonfires, sharing good times, cheers and conversation with friends and family. During the winter months Marilyn made her biannual visits to Cuba. These trips and the longstanding friendships that ensued gave her enormous joy. Although Marilyn could not make the trip this autumn, she relived past travels with smiles and laughter in her final days. Marilyn leaves behind to mourn her passing four daughters, Mary Coleen, Ottawa, Brenda (Jeff), Danielle and Karen, all of Sydney. She also leaves a brother she so admired, John (Valerie) Sobol, Southside Boularderie; sister-in-law, Josie Sobol, East Bay; her sister, Sharon Sobol, Sydney; her “adopted” sister and caregiver Lee Ellen; nephew, Ben; two step-grandchildren, Rachyl and Marcus, as well as many, many special friends near and far. Marilyn will forever be missed by her 11 grandchildren, Tristan, John Angus, Gabrielle, Marianne, Peter, Daniel, Colin, Hanna, Payton, Caitryn and Elyssa. They all loved their 'Baba' dearly, and she strived to teach them all aspects of her beloved Polish heritage so it could be carried on through the generations. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband, John, brothers, Joseph and Nicholas and sister, Janet. Just as Marilyn directed her life and final days, so too did she participate in her memorial planning. As per Marilyn's wishes, cremation has occurred. Funeral mass officiated by Rev. Paul Murphy will take place at St. Mary's Polish Church, Wesley Street, Whitney Pier on Tuesday, March 4 at 11a.m. There will be a gathering with family for friends and colleagues to share in a celebration of Marilyn’s life after her funeral mass from 12-2 p.m. Come and share stories and memories of years gone by. Internment will take place at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery and Middle Cape. Donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society or VON Cape Breton Metro Branch. Ruth Shannon Born: March 26th, 1943 Passed in: Shannara Passed on: February 23rd, 2014 It is with profound sadness and heartbreak we announce the passing of our wonderful, caring mother, grandmother, sister and lifelong soul mate, Ruth Shannon on February 23, 2014. She passed away peacefully with her children and husband by her side, at her home and most cherished place, Shannara, in Long Point, Nova Scotia. “Ruthie” as she was affectionately known, was born in Whitney Pier on March 26, 1943. Her birthmother Mary (McDonald) Cameron passed away when she was only 2 years old. Her father, the late Nevin Cameron (1965), who she greatly loved and admired, remarried Christina Mae Cameron, who raised her and remained a great and warming influence in her life until she passed in 2005. She was loved and respected by all those who knew her. She left a lifelong impression with just one encounter with her genuine warmth and smile. She was as comfortable at Rideau Hall as she was with her hands full of soil in her garden at Shannara. She was always the classiest lady in the room, her style and grace only being out done by her ability to make those around her feel comfortable and welcomed. More than anything else, she dedicated her life to her family. She epitomized the saying, “behind every great man stands a great woman”. She was a dedicated and caring wife to Joseph Shannon who together built a strong and loving family. Her children, Joel, Mark (Patti), Bruce, Jennifer (Joe) White and Jason (Kari), adored everything about her and her memories will be with them forever. Jessica, Samantha, Kristina, Cameron, Daniel, Mathew, Joseph, Marcus, Ryan, Jarrett, Sarah, Emily, Julia and Gregory have all been blessed with her influence and they will never forget her generosity and their wonderful times with her at Shannara. She is also survived by her siblings Helen Munro and Rev. Ronald (Jean) Cameron. She was predeceased by her three sisters Margie (Henry) Mackenzie, Evelyn Wood and Marie MacLeod and her brother Buddy Cameron. Over the years she was supported wonderfully by her physicians, surgeons and nurses. It seemed like she was always the most popular patient in care as they seemed to learn as much from her as she from them. There are too many to mention by name or by unit, however she would like all those who helped over the years to know she was very grateful and the family feels blessed for the time we had with our Mom as a result of their efforts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Arthritis Society. Visitation will be held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm. A Celebration of Ruth’s Life will be held at the Judique Community Centre on Saturday, March 1st at 11:30 am. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com.
