Added info for Neil Royal - Born April 1, 1936, in Glace Bay, son of Hayward Royal of NFLD & Catherine McDonald of Glace Bay Jack Theodore Cox With heavy hearts and a feeling of great loss, we the family of Jack Theodore Cox regret to announce his passing on March 24, 2014, in Baddeck, N.S., at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Jack was born in Meijel, Netherlands, on April 5, 1939, the son of the late William and Marie (Snickers) Cox. He is survived by his wife, Mabel (MacDonald) Cox and sons, Sean ( Janice), Baddeck, and Cory (Natasha), Halifax. Family was always important to Jack and the greatest of his treasures were his four grandchildren, Jake, Tara, Taylor and Alyssa. Time spent with Jake and Tara was especially precious, be it fishing mackeral at the wharf, playing checkers or going for ice cream. Of course Jake and Opa had many debates over their favourite hockey teams while Tara would usually be on Opa’s side. Nothing would bring a smile to Opa’s face more quickly than their visits, hearing Taylor tell him that she was “Dutch” and getting her news on Alyssa. Jack is also survived by his brothers, Leo (Annie) Cox, Mabou, and Peter (Debbie) Cox, Alberta; and sisters, Joanne (Frank) McKenna, Ontario, Mia (Bob) MacDonald, North Sydney, Lenie (Roger) MacAulay, Halifax, Gasha (Lee) Connolly, Truro, Mientje (George) Campbell, Sydney, Rietje Nicholson, Ontario, and Melisha ( Joey) Davis, Halifax. Jack worked construction for many years until determination and hard work made his goal of building a business in Baddeck a reality. In 1980 he opened Coxweld Ltd. and he was a proud and passionate owner until 2008, when he retired due to poor health. His greatest pleasures at “the shop” came when there was a project requiring design or modifications and of course finding innovating ways to make things work. Phrases like “that can be repaired” or “save that, we can use that for ...” was his creative thinking at work. He truly valued his relationships with “the guys” that worked at the shop over the years and also his association with customers that supported his business. Throughout his life, Jack has supported and been involved in many community organizations including Minor Hockey, Lions Club, Fire Department, Curling Club and the Village Commission. He was a strong advocate for the growth and development of his community and liked to see improvements that helped create future opportunity. Jack’s friends will remember him best for his wonderful sense of humour, love of fishing and curling, interest in world affairs and love of reading. The family wants to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors and all staff at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Words cannot express our appreciation for the care Jack has received over the years and in particular during his most recent visit. A special thanks to Dr. Carly Chow for his years of friendship and encouragement and support with his health issues. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A service will be held in Baddeck at the MacAulay Conference Center on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 2 p.m. A social gathering will follow the service at the Conference Centre until 6 p.m. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Jack may be made to either The Victoria County Memorial Hospital Foundation or The Victoria Highland Civic Centre.

Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Jennie Melski Born In: Sydney Born: December 23rd, 1915 Passed in: Whitney Pier Passed on: March 22nd, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that the Melski family announces the passing of their mother, Jennie Melski. Jennie passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, at the age of 98. Born in Sydney on Dec. 23, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Niedzielski) Kiec. Jennie became church organist at St. Mary’s Polish Church at an early age and continued to serve the parish, except for a period when she had to interrupt her duties to raise nine children, until she could no longer climb the stairs to the choir loft. She actually attempted retirement twice, but the retirement lasted a short time, as she obligingly returned at the request of the parish priests. She loved music and liked nothing better than to have her family and their friends around the piano for a good singing session, especially at Christmas time, when Polish carols interspersed with carols sung in English, were enjoyed. During the summer, she spent pleasant times enjoying the country air at her son Joe’s cottage at Northside East Bay. Three highlights in her life were the two trips to Poland to visit relatives and greeting the Polish Pope in Halifax. Mom was a kind and loving mother who instilled in her children an appreciation for their Catholic faith. She followed the dictum of the popular, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen that ‘the family that prays together, stays together’, by calling the children together to recite the rosary. As a young lady, Jennie was recruited by her parish priest to teach the Polish language to the young children of the parish. She was proud of her Polish heritage and passed this pride on to her children. She modestly acknowledged that she was chosen by the parishioners as the queen of St. Mary’s parish and wearing her royal regalia, she rode on the parish float during Sydney’s 150th anniversary celebrations. She served her parish with selfless devotion, for which she received the admiration of the parish priests throughout the years. Her knowledge of the music, both Polish and English, required for church observances, was unequaled. Jennie is survived by her sons, Anthony Jr., Michael, Terrence and Robert; daughters, Leona and Ann; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Ted; sisters, Louise (Ted) Baker, Bernice Ratushny, Valerie Deturbide and many nieces and nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony, sons, Donald, Ronald, Joseph, sister, Mary Baryluk, brother, Alex, brothers-in-law, Edmund, Eugene and Peter, a brother, Stanley and a sister Cecilia, who died when very young. Visitation for Mrs. Melski will take place Thursday, March 27 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 28 at St. Mary’s Polish Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Burial at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Polish Church Building Fund. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com. Robert MacKinnon Born: June 20th, 1937 Passed on: March 15th, 2014 Bobby, Bob, Dad, Poppy: Partner, love & best friend of 47 years to wife Ann (nee Gormley) - for who morning tea & afternoon beer will never be the same. He very proudly served 38 years in the Canadian Army Artillery & REME branch, and then with the Corps of Commissionaires, which brought him from Sydney Mines, Cape Breton and let them travel Europe & Canada together. His adoring children Bill, Tricia (Sean), Erin and Rob (Natasha) always knew him as a man ahead of his time, who never hesitated to tell them he loved them. Who played catch until the sun went down, who not-so-secretly loved chocolate marshmallow bunnies and pancake breakfasts; who taught them to drive the green station wagon "up around the P", the Lada on the hills of UNB and to change a tire in any weather; that every task is worthy of commitment and dedication, and that to be family is to be part of a team forever. Loving grandchildren Matt & Charlie will miss the arena snacks at Mooseheads games with him, and the wild adventure of his clandestine "catch & release" squirrel program. Poppy was the number one fan of granddaughters, Derry & Arlie's repeat, encore, back-by-popular demand, musical extravaganzas. The kindest man, he never had a harsh word for anyone. He taught his children to never judge, or carry a grudge and to truly appreciate the little moments in life. They will carry on his commitment to the environment with his love of misting shower heads, extra sweaters & slippers; and will continue his war on sweatpants without pockets. In retirement he lived to putter in his yard & around home in Burton, do his puzzles, make his daily trip to Giant Tiger, play mahjong on his iPad & read anything to do with military history or nature. He loved fiddle music, perusing the flyers on Thursday, having his hair blow-dried & brushed, Masterpiece Theatre, a good belly laugh and manning the BBQ, much to the joy of family pets. A wonderful son to Margaret & Fah; the best big brother to Jimmy (Kay), Arlene, Francis (Glad), Margaret-Ann and Joe (Christine); a favourite uncle & loyal friend who loved hockey nights with the Leafs, his good buddies, Gordie and Will, and a bag of plain chips. He was always a perfect gentleman, except when forced to elbow the less-spry out of the way to secure the last dozen sugar donuts at the Masstown Market. He kept his sense of humour and his shock of hair (the envy of his brothers), until the very end. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Dr. Jeffery Moore, Dr. Debra Gowan, and the wonderful nursing staff at the Cardiac Care and Palliative Care units at DECH. A service was held in Oromocto. Donations in lieu of flowers to the "Soldier On" Program Michael Almond Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: May 29th, 1934 Passed in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: March 26th, 2011 For Dad To be heard, without saying a word To be hugged when we’re feeling blue, To be understood, when we’re confused So rare was a Dad like you. Your loving smile, and gentle laugh, Made all the difference in our day. Your endless wisdom and timeless advice Always helped us find our way. In you there was no Equal, You were in a class all your own And because of all the Love you gave us, We’ll never be alone. Sadly missed and never forgotten Charlene, Natalie, Deanna, Allison, Michael and Family

Dad's many interests included tracing his family roots in Cheticamp and meeting many cousins and family members, including Elizabeth LeFort, the well known rug hooker. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of … Jim Tetford Born In: Harbour Grace, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Passed in: Canada God paid another visit to our family on Thursday evening past. He fastened a beautiful pair of wings to Jim’s body and took him to Heaven. Knowing Jim - he double checked the knots. Jim was born in Harbour Grace, Nfld. in 1946. He was the first born of proud parents Annabelle (Taylor) and Frank Tetford and big brother to “his girls” Frances (Fran) and Barb. He spent his first 30 years in Newfoundland where he fished the high seas on his uncle Gord’s dragger and worked at the Fish Plant with his father. Jim learned the skills of the fishing trade at the hands of masters; he could tie a double fisherman’s knot that would stump Harry Houdini. Jim met the love of his life, Janet Howell, in Newfoundland and they soon crossed the water to make their home on Prince Edward Island. His strong work ethic and honesty meant he was never on the pogie. Jim found work at Island Auto Supply where he became the right hand man and good friend to the owner, Harvey Livingstone. He was loyal to the core and stayed with Harvey for more than 30 years. Just before he retired at age 65, Jim and Janet had one of those talks. You know the type. Work is done. No kids. We’re not spring chickens. What now? Jim missed his girls. Decision made. They sold the family home, rented a U-Haul and crossed the water once again. This time to Cape Breton Island, the place his sisters called home. (You should have seen what they packed into that U-Haul). Really! Jim and Janet settled at Emerald Court in New Waterford, a strategic location almost centered between Fran and Barb’s houses. They would call it home for the next three years. They fit right in. Jim was an easy friend – you met him, he smiled and friendship just happened. It was part of his character. He was a quiet man with simple tastes. He loved to putter around outside and chat with the neighbours. Boy, could he crack a joke. He cooked up the best “Newfoundland Sunday Dinner” you ever tasted and was the King of the barbecue. Jim loved to take Janet for drives all over the Island. He especially enjoyed sitting at Fort Petrie watching the Newfoundland Ferry heading back home. But most of all, he treasured the time he spent with his girls – Janet, Fran, Barb and his furry four legged nieces, Shelby, Abby and Miss Rosey. God, they’ll miss him. Left to cherish the memories are his precious girls, Janet, Fran Campbell, Barb Drake (Steve), Miss Rosey and Abby; sisters-in-law, Isabelle (Howard) Worthman, June (Rayfield) Dalley, Claudette Howell, and Maxine Clarke of Newfoundland; brother-in-law, Ken (Kathy) Howell of Halifax and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim is in heaven with his parents Frank and Annie; his mother and father-in-law, Janet and Harry Howell; his brother-in-law, Kevin Campbell and his sisters-in-law, Cybil Howell and Harriet Short. No doubt Shelby is by his side wagging her tail with pure joy. Fly high Jim. We will miss you forever. Visitation will be Sunday, March 23 from 3–6 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Jim will rest at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25 at the Calvin United Church, Hudson Street, New Waterford, where a celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Afterward, all are welcome to join Jim’s family and friends in the Family Room at the Church for hugs, tears, smiles and a few stories about God’s newest angel. Jim will be interred with his parents in Newfoundland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Online condolences may be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
