Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/ <http://www.cbgen.org/>>www.cbgen.org <http://www.cbgen.org/> NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Deaths February 05, 2016 Friday There was 1 obituary published today John William Ross - 93 yrs John William Ross Born In: The Points West Bay Passed in: Kentville, Canada Passed on: February 1st, 2016 John William Ross, MBA, CMA, FCMA, from The Points, West Bay, N.S., died Feb. 1, 2016 in Kentville, N.S. (his residence of the last two years) at the age of 93 years. Born in The Points, West Bay in 1922 to Helen (Gallivan) and Robert Ross. Known as 'Jack' while growing up, he was the last surviving member of his seven siblings (Eileen, Bobby, Donald, Elsie, Jane, and George. A sister died in infancy). John attained his Commerce degree from Dalhousie University. Later, with the support from Ruth, he was able to receive an MBA from McMaster at night school while working during the day and with small children at home (I think Mom deserves the credit here!). He enjoyed skiing with the family nearly every weekend. We had ski vacations as a family and summer vacations that often took us to Cape Breton where outdoor pursuits were enjoyed as well as many games of cards – mostly by the kids. He was an avid woodworker and made pieces for his family. He was a great gardener and we always had an overabundance of fruits and vegetables. His flower gardens were a beautiful sight. He was an excellent cook and generally no recipe was necessary. Most of his adult life, and until retirement, he was employed with the Society of Management Accountants of Canada (now Certified Management Accountants of Canada) where he finished his career as executive vice president of the national society. His work took him around the world and he was well respected in his field. He and Ruth were able to enjoy travel to many countries and enjoyed a good game of bridge. He retired to Cape Breton in the early 1980s where he enjoyed many pursuits including working in the woods, gardening (on a much bigger scale!), making maple syrup and apple cider, hunting and ice fishing. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth (Rupert) who was a lovely caring mother and wife who is missed. He and Ruth raised 6 children: Nancy (Jack), Martha (Alan), Colleen, Peter, Barbara (Mike) and Michael (Mizuho). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Leila, Amanda, Jason, Jessica, Melanie, Isaac, Helen, Thomas and Jim; two great-grandchildren, Emery and Otis; and other embraced family members, Bassem Eid, John Weatherhead and Leanne Bennett. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank the staff and owners of Wedgewood House for Seniors in Kentville for their loving and supportive care. As well, thanks to all the residents of Wedgewood House for their kindness and friendship. Thanks also to those members of his Cape Breton community who positively supported him over the years. In memory of John, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice or the Strait Richmond Healthcare Foundation, 138 Hospital Rd., Evanston, RR#1 Cleveland, N.S., B0E 1J0 or call 902-625-7234. A private family service will be held at a later date. Online condolences and inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.

Born In: Sydney Mines Born: July 3rd, 1921 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: February 1st, 2016 We, the family of Toni Marinelli, are saddened to announce her passing at Seaview Manor with her family present, on Monday, Feb. 1, 2016. Toni was the daughter of the late Carlo and Mary (Rossini) Marinello. She was born July 3, 1921 and raised on Atlantic Street, Sydney Mines. She spent the majority of her adult life in Sydney. Toni had a great belief and faith in God. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel, Sydney, a former member of Immaculate Conception and St. Pius X parishes in Sydney Mines. Toni was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Glace Bay in 1945. She was a registered nurse for 70 years. She was employed at St. Rita Hospital, Sydney but most would remember her as Dr. H.J. Devereux’s nurse – a job she loved and did well. Toni loved life and memories. She would talk often of being a competitive bridge player (stress ‘competitive’). As children, we remember many the card game on 52 Atlantic St. with her siblings and her brothers Vince and Louie, (none wanting to lose) would frequently say “sorry Joe” to brother Fr. Joe. They were all gifted with the ability to speak Italian, so these interactions were never clearly understood by those who watched these family events. The brothers and sisters remained close their entire lives. Toni loved to travel and socialize. She spoke of her travels to Italy to meet the rest of the Marinelli and Rossini families; of going to family weddings near and far or simply to a friend’s cabin in Ben Eoin. There were many stories of adventures with her sister Angela, friends Ann Terry and Nora, only to mention a few. To those of us who had the privilege of a meal of ravioli, meatballs, pezzles, shortbreads and a good drink prepared and served lovingly by Angela and Toni – a memory was made. Toni loved and admired her family. She is survived by Marguerite (Garron) Awalt, Halifax; Greg (Alana) Marinelli, Sydney; Marina (Russell O’Connor, deceased), Ottawa; Carl (Nadia) Marinelli, Dartmouth; Rita (Jim) Martin, Sydney Mines and their families. Toni was the last member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her brothers, Vince (Mary), Fr. Joe, Louie (Mary) and Angela. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery. Toni’s family would like to thank all those who provided care and support to her over the years especially the staff of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, the Renal Dialysis Unit, CBRH, the EHS service for all their ‘to’s and fro’s’; you are all exceptional at what you do. We would also like to say a very special thank you to Jerry and Frances Gillis and Mary and Ralph Neville for their kindness and support over the years. As Toni would say to you all, “God Bless You.” She lived a long a beautiful life…..we will miss her. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com. Walter Edward Aitkens Passed on: January 29th, 2016 Wally died peacefully, after a short illness, in the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves his wife, (Mary) Cathy (Drover), daughter Kim Aitkens-Campbell of Hubley, son Blaine Aitkens (Joyce Rankin) of Westmount, and his grandchildren Cole Campbell, Soleil Campbell, Remy Aitkens, and Roxy Macdonald. He is also survived by his sister Erma (Glen Shaver) of Florida, and brother Percy (Vera Polley) of Riverview, N.B., son-in-law Bruce Campbell, sister-in-law Peggy Wilkie and brother-in-law Albert Clamp, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families, including a favourite nephew Ross Aitken. He was predeceased by his parents, Alberta 'Bertie' (Clark) Aitkens and Ashley Aitkens, his sisters Cora, Vernie, Elza (Gillis), and Bertha (Clamp), and brothers Melville, Ivan and Norris. Bertie and Ashley moved to Westmount from the Magdalen Islands when Ashley was hired to run the Westmount-Sydney ferry. Wally was born and grew up well-loved in Westmount, the second-youngest of their 10 children, in the time when Westmount was a separate and distinct community with a village store, and cows grazing in the fields behind the house. Wally joined the Royal Canadian Air Force when he was 20, and was later stationed in Dayton, Ohio. Home on leave he met Mary Catherine Drover from Whitney Pier at the bus station and they corresponded, fell in love, and were married in St. Mark’s church. After Dayton, he was stationed to many RCAF bases --from Newfoundland to British Columbia and up to Alert in the High Arctic --including Ottawa (where Kim was born), and Whitehorse (where Blaine was born). He served overseas in Germany, at Lahr and Baden-Baden. When Wally retired after 27 years they moved back home. With some hands-on help from his nephew and son, they built a house on the property they’d bought years before and Cathy opened a beauty salon in the lower half. As it had been in every community they lived, the Westmount house was the centre of a wide circle of friends and family. Friday night was open house, and weekends were the time for lively music, friends, and good food. Wally and his siblings had inherited their mother’s musical talent, and when they got together, which was often, they played and sang with music-loving friends. From the house over-looking Sydney Harbour, with the little wharf he and Blaine built, he went fishing and boating in summer, and snowmobiling and ice-boating in winter. He liked to read, especially about the history and wildlife of Cape Breton. He was proud of his grandchildren, and delighted in being part of their lives. We think it fitting that he died on the Friday evening — just at the time he would have been pouring drinks for himself, Cathy, and drop-in friends, and then starting a tune. And that at the moment he died, during a snowstorm, the lights went out in Westmount. Visitation will take place Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Archdeacon Brenda Drake officiating. Memorials may be made to St. Alban’s church, or the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
