A resident of the Northside Communi t y Guest Home, Barbara was formerly a resident of Tobin Ave., North Sydney. Born in Forty Fort, Pennsylvania, on July 24, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Myrtle (Compton) Templeton. Following her mother’s early death, she was raised by her father, as well as her aunt Marion and uncle ‘Doc’ Lichtenwalner. Upon her father’s remarriage to Bermetta Fredericks, she was joined by half-siblings Mignonette, Margaret and Miller. Her nephews Greg and Bruce Gover were especially dear to her, as were her cousin Jean’s children, Cherif and Mona Zahir. A graduate of Wilkes College, Barbara worked as a decorator, bookshop assistant, and phone operator, as well as serving in the United States Navy for a time. She met Carl Morrison in 1964; they married and settled in North Sydney to raise two daughters. For many years, she was involved in Northside HeartBeats, a fitness group in the local area, eventually teaching yoga, meditation and tai chi, as well as traditional exercise. She loved reading and was a regular visitor to the North Sydney and Sydney Mines branches of the Cape Breton Regional Library. In particular she loved history, archaeology/Egyptology, and biography, although she also enjoyed a good mystery. She was a wonderful storyteller herself, and was always full of stories to entertain. She always was happy to provide a “listening ear” and sound advice. She was a pillar of strength for her family, handling challenges with grace and ease. She had a unique voice, loved to sing and had a boisterous laugh. She was an avid gardener and maintained a beautiful yard; the magnolia tree in particular was near and dear to her heart. She is survived by her two daughters, Jean Morrison, Shubenacadie, and Bermetta Morrison-Phillips (Walter Fougere), Halifax, and her three grandchildren, Haley, Chelsea and Cameron Fougere. She is also survived by a number of cousins, nieces and nephews, including Bruce Gover, Cherif Zahir and Mona Phillips. Special friends who became like family include Therese Pigeon, Paul Ettinger, and Lisa Hiscott, as well as “adopted” granddaughter, Alisha Leanne Hiscott. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Carl Morrison, brother, Miller Fredericks, and sisters, Mignonette and Margie, and nephew, Greg Gover. The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home for the many acts of kindness and care shown to Barbara during the past two years. The family would also like to thank Charles Parsons, J.D. Ramsay, Donna Rappard, and Kathleen Bunin for their many kindnesses to Barbara. McCabe - Florence King - 79 yrs Shirley Mae Smith - 81 yrs Alexander James Calder Born In: Glace Bay Born: September 8th, 1945 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: March 1st, 2016 We, the family, regret to announce the passing of Alexander 'Alex' James Calder on March 1, 2016, at the Halifax Infirmary. He died peacefully with family by his side. Alex was born on Sept. 8, 1945, in Glace Bay. The son of the late Alexander and Margaret (MacDonald) Calder, Alex leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 43 years, Bonita (Wall). He is also survived by his three children, Stacey Galloway (Keith Hawco), Charles Calder (Amanda MacDonald) and John (Heather) Calder; brothers, Peter (Judy), Stewart (Janet) and Carl (Patricia); sisters, Catherine Ravanello, Jean Calder and Debbie Calder (John Haughn); as well as his grandchildren, Caitlyn, Jasmine, Nicholas, Carter, Dylan, Matthew, Evan and Dalton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his younger brother Bruce. Alex loved spending time with his family and friends and was especially close with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the small pleasures with them — helping to make sure their latest toys “worked properly”, sneaking an extra scoop of ice cream after dessert was over, and anything else that would create smiles and leave a mess behind. He managed to have a positive outlook on everything and was a great support to all who knew him well. His sense of humour and enthusiasm were contagious. He also loved nothing more than to stir the pot and start a lively debate over just about anything. Especially politics, he loved his politics. No matter the subject matter he had an uncanny ability to switch sides midway through conversation, ensuring he always finished on the winning side of the discussion. Alex worked many jobs in his lifetime, including with the Bank of Nova Scotia, from where he retired. A man of strong work ethic, he couldn’t sit still in retirement and quickly went to work with his lifelong best friend, Pat Maglario, at Olympic Pools and Spas. He was also fortunate to enjoy travel in retirement, having visited Scotland, Hawaii and other locations throughout North America. He lived his life well and always to the fullest. If there’s a legacy he most wanted to leave behind it was his constant reminders not to take life too seriously and enjoy each of the moments we have with one another. Our special moments with him will never be forgotten. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 4th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry’s Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Parish (Whitney Avenue) on Saturday at 10 a.m. A reception for family and friends will follow at St. Theresa’s Hall, St. Peter’s Road. Lillian 'Jean' MacFadgen Born In: Detroit Born: May 7th, 1925 Passed in: Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada Passed on: March 26th, 2016 Lillian Jean MacFadgen (née MacKinlay) died February 26, 2016, in Nanaimo, B.C., at the age of 90. She passed from this life surrounded by the love of her children and grandchildren in her home looking out over the harbour, a fitting leave-taking for a generous and good person who spread love everywhere, lived justly and kindly, put others’ needs before her own, and saw only the best in everyone. Left behind to mourn her loss – and celebrate her amazing life – are her children, Heather (Rod), Jane (Dale), Lynne (Ross), Laura (Michael) and Don (Catherine). Jean was predeceased in 1973 by her husband, Donald MacFadgen. She is survived by her sister, Anne Shirley (Lawrence), and predeceased by brothers, Bud (Catherine) and Jerry (Joan). All her grandchildren adored their "Ahma" – she had a special relationship with each of them, always curious about their latest interests, always sustaining their endeavours with encouragement, thoughtful gifts, and “POCs” (pieces of chocolate). She will forever be held in the hearts of Ben (Leia), Emily, Megan, Noah, Sarah, Neal, Patrick, Kelsey, Amelia, Colleen, and Callum. And Ahma held a very special and poignant place in her heart for her granddaughter, Heather Beverley, who died in 1994 at 21 months. Jean was born on May 7, 1925, in Detroit, MI, with the family returning to Glace Bay, N.S. five years later. She grew up in a large family home with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all living together. She was an intellectually curious child with a deep love of music, nature, and the arts. She graduated from Dalhousie University in 1945 with a B.Sc., and then worked as a lab technician in Toronto, Boston, and Ottawa. She also made several lifelong friends during these years. Jean returned to Cape Breton and, in 1952, married Don, her childhood companion from summers on the Mira River. In 1973, when the Number 12 mine in New Waterford, N.S. caught fire, Don died suddenly at the mine face, after making the difficult decision to seal off the mine. A couple of years later Jean moved the family to Godalming, UK for a year, fulfilling an aspiration that she and Don had shared. Jean then enrolled in the Master of Social Work program at Wilfred Laurier University, focussing on community development. Upon graduating in 1980, she worked as the executive director of the YWCA in Kitchener, Ont. When her first grandchild was born in 1984, she relocated to Vancouver to be near him and her family. She was employed there as executive director of the West End Seniors’ Network. After retiring at the age of 66, she went to China for six months to teach ESL. Jean had an enduring sense of community and social justice. She worked one summer with the first professional social worker in Nova Scotia, Jane Wisdom, and wrote her Master’s thesis on Ms. Wisdom. She was one of the founders of the Glace Bay Citizens Service League, an ecumenical, non-profit organization offering many needed community programs, and which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. She also served on the steering committee of the Nova Scotia Status of Women, and on the boards of the College of Cape Breton and the Miners’ Museum in Glace Bay. Family mattered more to her than anything else in this world, and she died the way she lived, with children and grandchildren singing her favourite Celtic songs by her bedside. There will be a candlelight funeral service for Jean on Saturday, March 5th, 2016 (7 p.m.) at St. Andrew’s United Church, Nanaimo, B.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made, in Jean’s name, to Cape Breton University (Sydney, N.S.) or Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, B.C.) for student bursaries. Rita (Deveaux) Connors Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: February 19th, 2016 It is with mixed emotions that we announce the recent passing of our dearly loved mother, Rita (Deveaux) Connors at Maple Hill Manor, a place she happily referred to as “the best place I ever lived”! Although she died on Feb. 19, 2016, she was actually taken from us gradually over the past six years by the monster called Alzheimer's disease. Although we are distraught to lose that final contact with her, because there were still so many funny and endearing moments that we had together, we are grateful for the fact that her difficult journey is ended and she is at peace. Mom was born in New Waterford almost 92 years ago, to the late Telesphore and Eliza (Aucoin) Deveaux. French was her first language, and she spoke it fluently for many years. She attended Mount Carmel School, and then graduated from Mount St. Vincent University in 1942. She worked at the War Office in Halifax until her marriage, after which she moved back home. Over the years she worked teaching typing and shorthand in night school, then as a secretary at BEC, and finally as a medical secretary, first for Dr. Steven Wolfe and then for Dr. Peter Littlejohn for many years. She was very active in the NW Figure Skating Club, the Mount Carmel Joy Program, and served for 25 years on the Maple Hill Manor Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to play cards, and was quite adept at 45s. Besides her parents and her husband Russell, she was predeceased by a son Kenneth in infancy, her beloved only sibling, Eugene 'Jeep' Deveaux and a much loved son-in-law, Leroy McKinnon. Mom is also survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley Deveaux of Eastern Passage, N.S., and by Brenda Chiasson and Vernon Chisholm, who grew up like our brother and sister and always remained in close contact with Mom. She will be sorely missed by a wide circle of friends – how she treasured her time with them! She will be missed as well by her cousins in Cheticamp, and by her nieces and nephews in the Connors and Deveaux families, especially Cheryl Deveaux McDaniel, who spent many childhood summers with us. Also by a special 'daughter', Carol Ann Sheppard – they always made each other laugh! Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 25 from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. There will be a funeral mass at St. Leonard's Church on Friday, Feb. 26 at 10 am, followed by a reception at the parish hall on Convent Street. Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation to follow. Mom's kindness and generosity to others were legendary; please honour her memory by performing an act of kindness to someone in need.
