HAMM Beloved father, husband and friend, Carl Hubert MacDonald Hamm passed away from complications due to Parkinsons on February 26th, 2016 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on the Murray Road in North River, Victoria County, he was the steadfast, diligent and unswerving foundation of our family home in Baddeck. An accountant by trade, Dad was hired to keep the books at Stone's Drug Store a few weeks after its doors opened, holding the position until his retirement after 43 years of dedicated service. Donnell Beaton, former proprietor of Stone's and family friend, shared some memories of Dad: "Carl did so many things to improve the business of the drugstore and he went upon this work with diligence and honesty and integrity as becoming an honest upright man. Never one to raise his voice, he had a manner to his demeanor that instilled confidence in everyone who was witness to his comments. He was mild-mannered, respected by all and I’m sure that he never had an enemy or confrontation with anyone. His music was another passion as I witnessed over the years conversations with many of his fiddling friends, people like Byron MacPhee, Joey Beaton, Winston Scotty Fitzgerald, Maynard MacKenzie, Bussy MacLeod, Charlie MacCuspic, and many more." Dad's true calling was music, and in that aspect of his life he excelled with the same diligence that he applied to his work and family. In the ‘50s and ‘60s he played halls and houses all over Cape Breton Island, by himself and with The Tuneweavers. A charter member of the Cape Breton Fiddler's Association in 1973, he played at the first Glendale Festival that year and continued to play with the association until he retired his fiddle due to Parkinsons whereupon he would sit with his music books and read music and play tunes in his head as he went. His encyclopaedic memory of Scottish music and local history will be sorely missed. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lodge #35, Baddeck for over 55 years as well as past treasurer of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society. Son of the late George and Margaret Hamm (MacDonald), he was predeceased by wife Jacqueline (Kerr) and brothers-in-law Roy Kerr and Pat Ryan. He is survived by loving son and daughter Donald Hamm (Megan) and Elaine Fuller (Reg); sister Donna Ryan and the grandchildren he loved and thought about so much: Isabelle Hamm and Bhreagh and Kylea Fuller. Cremation has taken place. A ceilidh for both Mom and Dad, service and burial will be held at a later date. Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/ <http://www.cbgen.org/>>www.cbgen.org <http://www.cbgen.org/> NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Deaths March 15, 2016 Tuesday There were 7 obituaries published today Hughie Joseph MacDonald - 73 yrs Bernard Russell Carew - 70 yrs Verner Murdock “Vern” Hillier - 64 yrs John Tremblett - 88 yrs Evelyn Morrison - 90 yrs Sister Marcella Rankin - 87 yrs Bertha Anna (Capstick) Kanarie - 90 yrs Hughie Joseph MacDonald Born In: Meat Cove Born: November 12th, 1942 Passed on: March 11th, 2016 On Friday, March 11, 2016, God called our home to say he needed a hardworking man to help him out in Heaven; Hughie answered God's call. Hughie Joseph MacDonald, better known to everyone as “Big Hughie” was born on Nov. 12, 1942 in Meat Cove, N.S. He was the youngest child of John and Christine (Fraser) MacDonald. He was raised from a young age by the late John Simon and Mary Ann Fraser, due to the death of his mother. Hughie was a lifelong fisherman. Fishing lobsters out of Bay St. Lawrence and snow crab out of Pleasant Bay on the Heather Mary III with his fishing partner (also son-in-law) of 34 years, Clyde McLellan and his crew; daughter, Charlotte and grandsons, Waylon and Clydie. He liked nothing better than to tie up at the wharf and have a good chat with everyone talking about their days’ catch and as we all know, “Fishermen don’t Lie!” Hughie also worked for the Department of Highways, for 30 years as a snow plow operator. After retiring from the D.O.T, Hughie continued to privately plow driveways in the village. Hughie loved anything to do with the outdoors, be it ice fishing on the Bras’ Dor Lakes, picking blueberries (which he shared willingly) to hunting at his cabin in Wittenburg, N.S. with his hunting buddies, Clyde and Waylon. For Hughie, it was more about the time spent with his buddies and the MacNeil brothers telling stories after a day of hunting on the mountain regardless if their hunt was successful or not. “If you consider an unsuccessful hunt to be a waste of time, then the true meaning of the chase eludes you altogether.” He also successfully shot his first moose this past season. On any given day he could be found in his building, usually fixing one thing or another or otherwise watching his Montreal Canadiens during the hockey season. ‘Go HABS Go’! Hughie wasn’t much of a traveller but he made sure he would visit his lifelong friend, Stanley Affleck in P.E.I. every summer. Sarah Elizabeth “Ada” MacLean Sarah Elizabeth ‘Ada’ MacLean died on Monday, March 7, 2016, at the age of 91. Except for the last two months at the hospital, Ada had been able to live a full life at home in MacKinnon Harbour, Victoria County, doing the things she loved and did so well, including cooking, baking, knitting, gardening, berry picking, solving crossword puzzles, hosting visitors, and sharing her deep knowledge and opinions on virtually everything under the sun. Ada was predeceased by her husband, Alex C.; her parents, Dan Joe and Cassie (Walker) MacKenzie; her adoptive parents, John Y. and Flora (Walker) Gillis and their family, with whom she was raised after the death of her mother and held close to her heart; her siblings, Kay, Archie, Jessie and James D.; and her grandson, Neil. She is survived by her children, Lyla, Dartmouth, Casilda (Kenzie MacKinnon), Halifax, Marina, Antigua, Aileen (Steve Griffiths), Ottawa Brook, Mark, Dartmouth, and Paul, MacKinnon Harbour; her niece Cathy MacLean, Toronto; her grandchildren, Emily Colvill, Alec MacKinnon and Annie Mae MacKinnon; and her great-grandchildren, Ross and Sarah Colvill. Although she enjoyed the many pleasures of raising her family in the traditional Scottish culture of rural Cape Breton, Ada was a thoroughly modern woman. She had a refined aesthetic sense from an early age, especially in cooking and clothing. She graduated from high school at 16 and began her teaching career the in local schools. She then graduated from St. F.X. in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science, worked as a teacher and dietitian before returning to MacKinnon Harbour with Alex to start her family. After raising her children, Ada returned to teaching in Iona from 1969 to 1985. She was a natural educator, with an easy ability to provoke curiosity and to make learning interesting. After her retirement, her principal obsessions were her experiments in gardening and a particular proficiency with the knitting machine on which she made work socks — too many to count. Ada and her family appreciated the warm care she received from the staff at the Baddeck Memorial Hospital and from its palliative-care team. Visitation will be held in Iona Parish Hall Friday, March 11, from 2 to 9 p.m. Funeral service at St. Columba Church, Iona, Saturday March 12, at 11 a.m. Loaves and Fishes Cape Breton was her favourite charity. Hamm Born In: North River, Canada Passed in: Sydney, Canada Passed on: February 26th, 2016 Beloved father, husband and friend Carl Hubert MacDonald Hamm passed away from complications due to Parkinsons on Feb. 26, 2016 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on the Murray Road in North River, Victoria Co. he was the steadfast, diligent and unswerving foundation of our family home here in Baddeck. An accountant by trade, Dad was hired to keep the books at Stone's Drug Store a few weeks after it's doors opened, holding the position until his retirement after 43 years of dedicated service. Donnell Beaton, former proprietor of Stone's and family friend shared some memories of dad: "Carl did so many things to improve the business of the Drug Store and he went upon this work with diligence and honesty and integrity as becoming an honest upright man. Never one to raise his voice he had a manner to his demeanor that instilled confidence in everyone who was witness to his comments. He was mild mannered, respected by all and I’m sure that he never had an enemy or confrontation with anyone. In the 50s and 60s he played halls and houses all over Cape Breton Island, by himself and with TheTuneweavers. A Charter Member of the Cape Breton Fiddler's Association in 1973, he played at the first Glendale Festival that year and continued to play with the association until he retired his fiddle due to Parkinsons whereupon he would sit with his music books and read music and play tunes in his head as he went. His encyclopedic memory of Scottish music and local history will be sorely missed. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lodge #35 Baddeck for over 55 years as well as past treasurer of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society. Son of the late George and Margaret Hamm (MacDonald), he was predeceased by wife, Jacqueline (Kerr) and brothers-in-law, Roy Kerr and Pat Ryan. Survived by loving son and daughter, Donald Hamm (Megan) and Elaine Fuller (Reg); sister, Donna Ryan and the grandchildren he loved and thought about so much, Isabelle Hamm and Bhreagh and Kylea Fuller. The family would like to thank the staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital as well as the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their dedicated service to both of our parents in their times of need. We are truly grateful for all the work that you do. Special thanks as well to the wonderful staff of the palliative care unit at the CB Regional Hospital in Sydney. Cremation has taken place. Ceilidh for both mom and dad, service and burial will be held at a later date. "Children's children are the crown of old men; but the glory of children are their fathers." Proverbs 17:6 Alexander James Calder Born In: Glace Bay Born: September 8th, 1945 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: March 1st, 2016 We the family regret to announce the passing of Alexander 'Alex' James Calder on March 1, 2016, at the Halifax Infirmary. He died peacefully with family by his side. Alex was born on Sept. 8, 1945, in Glace Bay. The son of the late Alexander and Margaret (MacDonald) Calder, Alex leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 43 years, Bonita (Wall). He is also survived by his three children, Stacey Galloway (Keith Hawco), Charles Calder (Amanda MacDonald) and John (Heather) Calder; brothers, Peter (Judy), Stewart (Janet) and Carl (Patricia); sisters, Catherine Ravanello, Jean Calder and Debbie Calder (John Haughn); as well as his grandchildren, Caitlyn, Jasmine, Nicholas, Carter, Dylan, Matthew, Evan and Dalton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his younger brother, Bruce. Alex loved spending time with his family and friends and was especially close with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the small pleasures with them — helping to make sure their latest toys “worked properly”, sneaking an extra scoop of ice cream after dessert was over, and anything else that would create smiles and leave a mess behind. He managed to have a positive outlook on everything and was a great support to all who knew him well. His sense of humour and enthusiasm were contagious. He also loved nothing more than to stir the pot and start a lively debate over just about anything. Especially politics, he loved his politics. No matter the subject matter he had an uncanny ability to switch sides midway through conversation, ensuring he always finished on the winning side of the discussion. Alex worked many jobs in his lifetime, including with the Bank of Nova Scotia, from where he retired. A man of strong work ethic, he couldn’t sit still in retirement and quickly went to work with his lifelong best friend, Pat Maglario, at Olympic Pools and Spas. He was also fortunate to enjoy travel in retirement, having visited Scotland, Hawaii and other locations throughout North America. He lived his life well and always to the fullest. If there’s a legacy he most wanted to leave behind it was his constant reminders not to take life too seriously and enjoy each of the moments we have with one another. Our special moments with him will never be forgotten. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 4 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry’s Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Church (Whitney Avenue) on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Fr. Dennis Lamey and Fr. Albert Maroun officiating. Interment at a later date. A reception for family and friends will follow at St. Theresa’s Hall, St. Peter’s Road. Donations can be made to the Renal Dialysis Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
