Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/ <http://www.cbgen.org/>>www.cbgen.org <http://www.cbgen.org/> NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Cape Breton Deaths March 30, 2016 Wednesday There were 10 obituaries published today Mark Earle Thomas - Joseph William “Billy” Perry - 58 yrs John Robert Walter Mahoney - 62 yrs Mark Christopher Holloway - 37 yrs John Norbert Schmid - 71 yrs Angus Brian MacDonald - 67 yrs Deborah Jamie (Simpson) Corbett - 62 yrs Pauline (Serwatuk) Cummings - Francis Collins “Frank” Smith - 70 yrs Rosaire Paquette - Memorial Mass Angus Brian MacDonald Born In: Glace Bay Born: November 26th, 1948 Passed on: March 25th, 2016 So, the world doesn't have Angus MacDonald to kick around anymore. I'm gone! The devil finally called my name. The grim reaper came for me on Friday March 25,2016. I bought the farm. I bit the dust. So I guess I'm off to the promised land eh? The promised land! Imagine! Anyway, I was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay on Nov. 26, 1948. Of 13 children in the family, I was the sixth born. I was predeceased by four brothers, Lawrence 1943, Pat 1990, Kevin 1999, Allen 2010. I am survived by my OG Brenda, Tower Road; my three children, Tyler, Stratford, Ont., Lawrence and his wife, Lisa, St. Mary's, Ont. and Coady, Tower Road and my grandchildren, Nicole MacDonald, Glace Bay, Charlise MacDonald, Stratford, Ont., Hayden and Nathan MacDonald, St. Mary's, Ont. and Haille and Lukas MacLeod, St. Mary's, Ont. So anyway, I think I was a pretty nice guy, despite being a former punk and despite what some people would say about me. What did they know about me anyway? I loved my family and cared for them through good times and bad; I did my best. I had some serious health problems the last few years, but survived them (up till now anyway) with the help of my wife, Brenda; my granddaughter, Nicole; my sweetheart little dog, Scarlett, and my rescue kitten, Dolly. Elaine and Sonya and all the other nurses from the VON and the doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, the Palliative Care nurses and doctors, Dr. Archibald and doctors and nurses at Glace Bay hospital. My little dog Scarlett died Sept. 2013, and there really are no words to describe what a total destresser Scarlett was for me. So I guess if there's a place in the after-life where little dogs and old dawgs go, then that's where you'll find me and Scarlett. Maybe I'll see you all there sometime. Besides my wife, children and grandchildren, the single most wonderful event in my life was spending three years at UCCB, now CBU where I earned my BACS Degree, 1992 grad. I don't want a funeral. A funeral is a waste of harrrrrrd earned and harrrrrrd saved money that my family can use now. I was a very private person in life, so I don't want to end that life with people gawking at me while I lay in a coffin. I'm being cremated and my ashes are being scattered (somewhere). So instead of going to see the great creator, I will be going to see the great cremater. Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital For those who would like to express condolences, visitation will take place on Thursday, March 31, 2016 from 1-3 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, with memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. Happy trails! Joyce (Fennell) Avent Born In: Whitney Pier Passed in: Savage Minnesota Passed on: March 22nd, 2016 Joyce passed away peacefully in Savage, Minnesota, on March 22, 2016. She leaves a devoted husband Chris and children Brian (Kirsten) and Christina (Justin) Julian as well as five cherished grandchildren, Colin, Lliam, Caitlyn, Declan and Waylon. She will be fondly remembered by siblings Ron, Constance (Lloyd), Sheila, Margaret, Mike (Lorraine), Mary (Michael), Theresa and Tom (Tina) as well as in-laws Carole and Marcel Levesque and father-in-law Bill Avent. She was predeacesed by her sister Leona and parents Mike and Helen Fennell, formerly of Whitney Pier, and her mother-in-law Eve Avent. Joyce was born her family's seventh daughter in a time and place that prized male progeny. An inauspicious beginning to be sure. She was fortunately blessed with a winning combination of skills and charm and a rock-solid belief that goodness prevails. She was an actress at heart who floored her siblings with a dead-on hilarious imitation of Louis Armstrong and others. In her heyday, she sewed smashing outfits by day and wore them dancing that very night. She was a bona fide babe. In later years, she strove against impediments to realize her dreams of a teaching career, marriage and motherhood — the latter became her great joy. The late stages of her final illness deprived her of that joy but in all of life's stages she stood her ground. She hoodwinked an ever vigilant mother to enjoy childhood misadventures, mastered creative skills despite sometimes vocal naysayers and most importantly shone as an alpha wife and mother. All who loved her will treasure our memories and Joyce's lovely legacy of beautiful children and grandchildren — goodness prevails. Bernard James 'B.J.' Cook Born In: New Waterford Passed in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Passed on: March 1st, 2016 It is with great sadness and much love for B.J. that we announce his sudden passing on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, in Toronto, Ont., at the age of 23. He was always goofing around and laughing about something and was good at making everyone around him smile as well. He loved kids and adored his niece, Jorja, who always held a special place in his heart. B.J. also loved basketball, hockey and skateboarding, but most of all he loved the outdoors — he loved the ocean and woods, and was always up for an adventure. B.J is survived by his father, Bernie Cook, Sydney; sisters, Aleshia (Colton) Burns, New Waterford; Julie (Bobby) Coakley, Ontario; nieces and nephews, Jorja, Odin, Dayva, Sebastian and Norah, cousins, aunts and uncles. The Lord replied, "I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you." ‎It is with heavy hearts (and of course lighter smiles) that we announce the sudden passing of our beautiful and beloved Earth Angel, Karen LeDrew. Karen was released from her body on Sunday, Mar. 20, 2016 at home, when she took her final breaths of the life she was (and still is) so passionately in love with. Touching down on Earth in Sydney, Karen was the daughter and light of the late Seaward and Nellie MacLean‎. At the time of her passing Karen was penning a memoir, more fervent and eager than ever to share the story of her personal revelations in both her Spiritual journey and courageous life adventure. Karen was born an uplifter and is a teacher to her core. She will forever be remembered for her comedic and contagious life affirming Spirit, her enlightening smile, her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ and what has come to be recognized as her personal and appropriately coined slogan of inspiration... "Smile. Smile. Smile‎." Those who've been blessed to have shared time with Karen, however short or long, are undoubtedly left with indelible impressions of her love, strength, courage, faith, spontaneity, humour and above all else her unmistakable embodiment of joy. Karen’s passion is sharing her faith in both written and spoken word and teaching unconditional love through humour, impeccably timed wisdom and heart hitting poetry. She did this with daily sharings online, many personal letters and journals, lots of (long distance) phone calls... and of course over many coffees in person. Karen lives on and will be forever celebrated in the daily lives of her children whom she is more proud of than words could ever describe, Thomas LeDrew (her Rock), Kyle MacLean (her little big boy), Daniel MacLean (her Angel), David MacLean (her #1 son), twin beauties, Shelly and Sheila MacLean (Mamma's baby girls); her beautiful grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacob, Brandon, Johnathan, Alyssa and Emma; her great-grandchild, baby Eli; her big sisters, Margie Hollohan, Wanda Murrin, Kimberly, Debbie Pratt, Nancy Aboud; baby sister, Sherry; big brothers, Fraser MacLean and Dougie MacLean; many beautiful nieces, nephews and godchildren, Valerie and Chantel; as well as the many friends whom she has touched in her short time with us. She leaves a devoted husband Chris and children Brian (Kirsten) and Christina (Justin) Julian as well as five cherished grandchildren, Colin, Liam, Caitlyn, Declan and Waylon. She will be fondly remembered by siblings Ron, Constance (Lloyd), Sheila, Margaret, Mike (Lorraine), Mary (Michael), Theresa and Tom (Tina) as well as inlaws Carole and Marcel Levesque and Bill Avent. She was predeacesed by her sister Leona and parents Mike and Helen Fennell, formerly of Whitney Pier, and her mother-in-law Eve Avent. Joyce was born her family's seventh daughter in a time and place that prized male progeny. An inauspicious beginning to be sure. She was fortunately blessed with a winning combination of skills and charm and a rock solid belief that goodness prevails. She was an actress at heart who floored her siblings with a dead on hilarious imitation of Louis Armstrong and others. In her heyday, she sewed smashing outfits by day and wore them dancing that very night. She was a bona fide babe. In later years, she strove against impediments to realize her dreams of a teaching career, marriage and motherhood - the latter became her great joy. All who loved her will treasure our memories and Joyce's lovely legacy of beautiful children and grandchildren - goodness prevails. Douglas was a loving, compassionate and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his greatest passion, his love for them was immeasurable. Douglas took great pride in his children, taking every opportunity to brag about their accomplishments. His granddaughters Kaitlyn, Vanessa and Zoe were referred to as ‘Pappa’s Angels’ and held a very tight spot in his heart. His great-grandson Jayden brought him many smiles and special days. The biggest space in his heart was held by his wife of 50 years, Anna. Douglas and Anna made beautiful memories during their 50 years, either by hosting friends and family at their home for many dinners, or dancing the night away. Douglas and Anna and their children spent many years as ‘campers’ on Ben Eoin Beach. Gray - 86 yrs David 'Dave' Douglas Coffin Born In: Sydney Passed in: Havre Boucher Passed on: March 16th, 2016 David ‘Dave’ Douglas Coffin of Havre Boucher, N.S., passed away at home on Friday, March 18, 2016, at age 69. Dave grew up in Sydney, Cape Breton. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler and brought home many trophies, making his dad so very proud. Though he had not lived in Sydney for many years, whenever he visited from Havre Boucher, he would often stop by and visit the bowling alley and old friends any time he was in town. Dave’s work as an independent distributor for Eastern Bakeries brought him to Havre Boucher where he became well known as “the bread man”. He also discovered not one, but two bowling alleys: one in Port Hawkesbury and one in Antigonish! With two bowling leagues for recreation and a new job, “the milk man” began a new route for Farmer’s Dairy. He enjoyed interacting with his customers and came home with many entertaining stories which carried him to retirement in 2007. Many people often spotted Dave at The Big Stop or Tim Horton’s over the years and little got in the way of him picking up The Cape Breton Post and of course, scratch tickets! Dave loved his cozy perch on the hill overlooking the Strait. Whenever his mom reminded him that he was living “on the wrong side of the Causeway”, he retorted with, “I can see Creignish, your homeland, from my living room window!” Dave was an avid fan of music, always listening to and sharing his latest musical discovery. Although David did not sing with his sisters, some of his fondest memories included gathering around the piano while listening to them perform for company. Often, when asked what instrument he played, he would proudly respond, “the record player”. In his most recent years, Dave was blessed with three amazing grandchildren, Ava, Ethan and Owen. He was lovingly referred to as ‘Ubba’ by grandchildren Ava and Ethan and he loved having them live so close. Dave was truly idolized by Ethan, who followed his every step and looked forward to visits with “Ubba” at every possible opportunity. Ubba also welcomed new grandson, Owen in December, 2015. Dave will be sadly missed forever by his wife of 44 years, Maureen (Black) and daughters, Tiffany (Denivaldo), Audrey (Tom) and Lori-Anne; sisters, Cheryl (Sheldon), Kathy (John), Annette (Jo Ann), Laurie, and Marguerite (Hugh). Dave also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins with whom he shared a lifetime of happy memories, and one remaining aunt, Louise Coffin. He was predeceased by parents, Elizabeth and Vincent Coffin, and son, David, who died in infancy. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Havre Boucher Community Centre on Saturday, March 26th from 2-4 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date, when Dave will return home to his final resting place in Cape Breton. Memorial donations may be made to Cathy's Place Cancer Resource Room, ROC Society or charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green's Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Born in Belle Cote, Margaree on Dec. 26, 1926, Mary Ann was the daughter of the late Dominick and Elizabeth (LeBlanc) Doucet. She is survived by her son, Bobby Aucoin (Marjorie Hillier), New Waterford; daughter, Edna Aucoin (Jack Kelloway), Glace Bay; grandchildren, Robert Aucoin, Glace Bay; Denise (Brian) McLeod, Sydney; Kim (Jason) Hennessy, Sydney; Eric Aucoin (Michelle Parsons), New Glasgow; and their mother, Pauline; Lori Turnbull (Patrick Casey), Aylmer, Quebec; Jason Turnbull (Sara Frampton), Sudbury, Ontario; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Burke Aucoin, Dominic and Maria McLeod, Katelyn and Abbey Hennessy, Mercedes Casey; and several nieces and nephews. In her younger years, Mary Ann worked as a chambermaid and waitress in Cheticamp and at the lobster plant on Port Hood Island. She and her husband moved to New Waterford in 1951 when Arthur began working in the coal mines and she worked as a housekeeper for several families. She was well-known for her Acadian meat pies, fricot, waffles, and Sunday family turkey dinners. She loved bowling, fishing, and picking berries of all kinds (which she generously shared). She greatly enjoyed camping, Cape Breton fiddle music and attending outdoor summer concerts and festivals (especially Belle Cote Days). Mary Ann liked to sew and did many alterations for over 50 years, especially for her good neighbours in “14 Yard”. She liked to knit and made many mittens, socks, hats, slippers, and blankets for family and friends. Mary proudly participated in and supported the Terry Fox Foundation Walk for the past 31 years. “Marie” also enjoyed her weekly trips to the Casino, whether it be in her own little car, or in later years, on Bus #9. She formed her own little circle of friends each Tuesday! “Mrs. Aucoin” was always ready and willing to do a favour for a friend, neighbour, or stranger. She dedicated her life to doing good deeds for others (whether it be feeding the neighbourhood dogs, bringing in the green bins, or generously providing “drives” to friends and family). Many enjoyed her sharp wit and humour. She was a longtime member of the N.W. Pensioners Club and a former member of the N.W. Assumption Society (French Club). She was a true Christian woman and a loyal, faithful member of St. Leonard’s Parish (former Mount Carmel Church) and a long-time member of St. Leonard’s CWL. When predeceased by her husband, Arthur in 1987, widowed for almost 30 years, she maintained her honest, hard-working, strong, independent Acadian values. “Nanny Aucoin” (as she was affectionately known to her family and extended family) was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and had a heart full of love for her family, especially her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who loved her dearly. Besides her parents and husband, Mary was also predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Arsene, and Philip. 3. Greetings listers, The name is on the tip of my tongue, but I’m having a senior’s moment. The name on my tongue is Don Snow, whom I also met, but somehow I don’t think this is right. He was visiting from NS his daughter in Maple Ridge, BC with his wife. Somewhere between 2009 & 2013. I met him in downtown Vancouver for tea at “The Wave”, after he took the West Coast Express into the City. We then went to another former RCMP Officer’s office, a friend of his, he is now a lawyer. He moved from NS to Ontario to spend time with his other children. WHERE ARE YOU eh…… Carol out here in Vancouver.

Darryl retired from Sydney Steel, where he worked in the general office and was a rail inspector. Darryl formed many lifelong friendships during his time at Sydney Steel. Darryl played many shows around Sydney with his band, the Four Yachtsmen, in the 1960s and 70s. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Darryl recorded a large selection of albums, many of which featured country and Cape Breton themes. Thousands of his albums were purchased at the Red Barn Gift Shop in Baddeck, by tourists from across North America and the rest of the world. Even in his later years, Darryl was young at heart and kept active. He continued playing music, loved playing XBox, was active in softball, attended many dances, frequently sang at the Sydney Boardwalk and performed karaoke throughout Sydney. In addition to his many friends in Westmount and surrounding areas, Darryl developed many close friendships in Membertou and within the Filipino community in Sydney in his later years, often forged by a shared love of music.
