    1. Re: [NS-L] Hugh Nickerson married Ede/Edith Parker/Porter/Ede

    3. To Mia and others who have responded, Thanks! I have actually uncovered a lot more than I had originally intended. Given some other inputs from other researchers, the original grouping worked out as follows: Ede Goudy, as noted in the 1816 marriage bond at Halifax, NS, to Hugh Nickerson, was, indeed, Edith Porter, who had first married Capt. Thomas Goudey, son of James Goudey, Thomas was b. 25-Jan-1779, Yarmouth, NS. He apparently died around 1815. Edith was the daughter of Dudley Porter and Sarah Hay. Dudley is seen as both George Dudley Porter and Dudley Bradstreet Porter in various sources, but I have more on that "issue" for those who are interested. There are currently two "schools" regarding Dudley's origins. Surely he was the Dudley who married Sarah Hay on 05-Nov-1780 at Wakefield, MA (NOT Yarmouth, NS, and intentions were originally filed in Woburn, MA on 14-Dec-1779, nearly a year prior, it would seem.). As such, he is said to have been born around 1750-52. His parents, surely, were Josiah Porter and Sarah Bradstreet (very often, sadly, seen listed as Sarah Waterman - of whom many notes and comments indicate her mention in one history, but the name crossed out and replaced with Bradstreet... I'm just going on what the historic evidence suggests, as opposed to books from days gone by that may not have had access to the facts. Dudley was surely from Essex Co, MA, and his parents, Josiah and Sarah were married at Rowley, MA on 11-Jan-1749, per MA VR. Josiah was of Salem and Sarah of Rowley. To add to the confusion, there was an earlier Dudley Porter who married a Sarah (Sarah Davis), who had children in Reading and Haverhill, MA. However, he married his Sarah in 1767, so is surely NOT the same Dudley. Now, as for his full name. I have found NO evidence, aside from private files, that would indicate or agree with a "George Dudley" or "Dudley Bradstreet" as his full name. I also must wonder if the "George" one was to support his birth in Lebanon, CT in 1752 or 1753, which I'm also unable to find evidence of, other than one or two private files. I have to admit, I could also find no evidence of his actual birth or baptism in Massachusetts, so whose to say? In fact, there are, again, two schools when it comes to Josiah's origins, too! One showing him b. 1720 at Salem, MA, s/o William Porter and Edith Herrick, another, b. 1729, bapt. 03-Aug-1729, at Beverly, MA, son of William Porter and Mary Batchelder. It is actually not unlikely that William was first married to Edith Herrick, and a son named Josiah was born in 1720, but then died young. The same William married 2nd to Mary Kettle/Kittle (widow of John Kettle/Kittle). William and Mary were married on 08-Dec-1725 at Beverly, MA, where Josiah was born four years later. I have been unable to prove, so far, that it was the same William who first married Edith Herrick, then married Mary Batchelder Kittle/Kettle. I am still in the process of fleshing out all the "bits and pieces" of these family groups, but thought I should pass along what I have found, and hope I'm not upsetting too many apple carts in regards to the Sarah Waterman vs. Sarah Bradstreet discussions. Of note, the Porter family appears to have left MA for NS around 1782, and it's likely Edith was born in Yarmouth Co, NS. I suspect Josiah and Sarah (Dudley's parents) also came north. Oddly enough, there is a son of Josiah's named Asa Porter, the name being one found in Digby County records, but I can't currently recall his details as I am not in front of my usual database.
