Looking for information to help me work this marriage out... Have the Nickersons who came from Argyle (Yarmouth Co) to Digby, and am trying to nail down the early family. I am led to believe Hugh (Jr by my accounts) was b. 01-Aug-1783, Argyle, the son of Hugh (Sr by my accounts) Nickerson and Sarah Allen. I found a marriage bond record for Halifax Co, for Hugh Nickerson and "Ede Goudy" from Apr-1816. There is some indication from Argyle books that show Hugh married Edith PORTER, 06-Jan-1817. I show four children: James, Lois, Charls, and "Porter". Other sources show James Hatt, Lois Tooker, Charles Sumner, and Hugh Porter. Surely the fourth child IS Hugh Porter Nickerson, almost always seen as Porter. John Thurber, based on Edith's 1862 obituary, indicates her father was Dudley Parker. Was there such a man? Was there a Dudley Porter? What, if any, significance does the 1816 marriage bond have? Was this the same Hugh? IF so, was this the same Edith? IF so, then, was she widowed from a Mr. Goudy? I know their daughter, Lois, married George Thurber in 1838 at Long Island, Digby Co, NS. She died sometime around the same time as her mother (abt. 1862), as George remarried as a widower in 1863 to Mary Hannah (wid. Hankinson). So, anyone have any ideas on the early Nickersons of Digby? Who, really, was Edith? Why, if her maiden name was Parker, was Hugh PORTER Nickerson so named? Could the obit have been incorrect? I tend to find birth record most accurate, then marriage, and lastly death. At least when discussing parentage, birth dates/locations, and other information that is often lost, forgotten, or poorly remembered by informants who may not even be family.
