I found the McElmon I am looking for. Charles Matthew McElmon was enumerated in the 1871 census as a farmer at Lower Londonderry, close to his father James' house, with "Six men domiciled elsewhere" in his house. These would have been men working on the construction of the railway bridge. James McElmon is described in Daniel Johnson's New Brunswick newspaper archive as living "at the foot of the Folleigh River bridge' when his house caught fire ca. 1876. Both McElmons were enumerated in '71 as farmers, but both had lumber mills as well, so I'm oretty sure they provided the wood for the first bridge that led to the summit of Folleigh Mountain... just need to find local press coverage to determine how much was paid for it before the iron bridge was installed. Flemimg appears to have left that detail out of his report to the railway commissioners. Jay Underwood Elmsdale, NS www.Pennydreadfulpublishing.com Make a moral choice: Buy a printed book!
