    1. [NS-L] Which Susanna MOSER married which Philip MOSER--my view of that

    3. Hi All: I recently came across an entry in Walter Mission's book "Dear Jessica" stating (p. 46) that Philip MOSER 1808, s/o Leonard and Mary (CURRIE) MOSER, m.2) Susanna MOSER, d/o Johann Heinrich [Henry] and Mary (HENNEBERRY) MOSER, in 1845. The purpose of this note is to suggest that this appears to be wrong on two counts. First, I suspect that the Philip MOSER who m. in 1845 is a different Philip MOSER; and second, I suspect that the Susannah MOSER who marries in 1845 is not the d/o Henry and Mary (HENNEBERY) MOSER. So the purpose of this note is to put forth the reasons why and invite comments. To begin with, in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses of NS, we have only two Philip MOSER's in Halifax County--"Philip H." and "Philip L.". The novice genealogist would probably jump to the conclusion that the H. stood for Henry, and the L . for Leonard, but we won't go there (yet). From the 1871 and 1881 Censuses, we see that Philip H. is consistently shown as b. 1815, and his wife Susannah as b. 1824 (or thereabouts), and that they have a daughter named Emily b. 1848. Now in the 1871 Census, we see that Philip L. MOSER, b. 1808 (or thereabouts) is living with Daniel Philip MOSER and appears to be a widower. Living right next door is Leonard and wife Mary (CURRIE) MOSER. So now, let's track marriages. We know that a Philip MOSER marries a Mary Ann HOYE, who d. 1867 (which most likely eliminates the possibility that he marries Susannah MOSER in 1845), and we also know that Philip MOSER, widower, s/o Leonard MOSER, m. Sophia SCOTT, widow, in 1868. I think that this is the same Philip. He cannot be Philip H., who is married to a Susannah in both 1871 and 1881, and therefore he must be Philip L., who we now know is son of Leonard. So that novice genealogist who leaped to the premature conclusion that L. stood for Leonard would now appear to be vindicated. So, I believe that the father of Daniel Philip MOSER is Philip L. Moser 1808, s/o Leonard, who m. Mary Ann HOYE and then Sophia SCOTT. Second, this means that Philip H., who appears to be s/o Henry, is the Philip who marries a Susannah MOSER in 1845 since, as noted above, daughter Emily is b. 1848. This Susannah appears to be Susannah 1823, d/o Leonard, both because of her age and because, if Philip H. is s/o Henry, he almost surely did not marry Susannah 1819, who is his sister. There is also a question as to whether the Philip who d. 1890 is Philip L., s/o Leonard. As to this, his LWT states "I bequeath daughter Mary Ann Partridge of Halifax to be executrix all real and personal estate to go to daughter Mary Ann Partridge w/o Charles Partridge now of Halifax providing she shall deed to her brother and my son the Eastern portion of the land on which the the house is built. Said land situated at Moose Head" [transcribed by Joe Whitby]. According to her records, which are consistent, Mary (MOSER) PARTRIDGE is b. 2 Aug 1843, which is before the marriage of Philip H. and Susannah in 1845. So either he has a first wife, or she belongs to Philip L. Also, the deed tells us that she has a brother, and in the 1861 Census Philip H. has a family of three, whom we know to be himself, wife Susannah and daughter Emily. Also, we know of only one male child of Either Philip L. and Philip H., i.e. Daniel Philip. He cannot be the Daniel in the 1861 Census, who has a family of 6, and he does not marry until Dec 1862, at which time he is a bachelor. Since there is no room for him in the family of Philip H., he must belong to Philip L.; so until another male child of one of the Philip's is discovered, he and Mary would appear to be the children of Philip L. And finally, Philip H. seems to be associated with Moser River, while Philip L. seems to be associated with Moose Head. So what about Susannah 1819, who apparently didn't marry either Philip L. or Philip H.? I think that she is the Susannah/Susan, spinster, who appears in the family of sister Elizabeth (MOSER) FRASER in 1871 and brother Matthias MOSER in 1881. -----Bob H-----
