Hi All - As a emailed Carol, I've had far better luck with the search engine at Collections Canada by typing in less information. I often use the asterisk/wild card option. This morning I typed in F* for surname and filled in the place fields, Ontario, Stormont and Roxborough. What I got was all the surnames starting with F but got to one "Donald Farbes". Donald Farbes, however, is listed as Donald Forbes in the 1881 census, was in the first too but the transcriber saw it as FARBES. Another option I've used is common variants using the first three characters for starters. I've found some success using Mc*Farlan* for the endless butchering of that surname. It's annoying but that's my coping skill with that search engine.
