Well, I'm no expert on the ERNST lines at all, but decided I'd give this query a shot. Being as I've no preconceptions, I came up with a POSSIBLE theory that you may want to consider. William, son of James and Sarah, also noted in the 1901 census. He MARRIED a woman in 1900, who does not appear anywhere else. Though he and "Maria" are listed as "Single" I suggest, on the contrary, both were married, and to each other. Here is my "evidenciary" trail, starting with the information you provided, and trying to sort out the 2nd wife of James in the process... Well, James and Sarah were married 23-Oct-1869 in Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co, NS He was 21, she 20. He was b. @1848, her around 1849. 1901 census shows James' wife as Annie, b. 13-Sep-1861, not Sarah R. b. @1849! - Did he marry an Annie 2nd? Could find no mention. In fact, in 1911, wife is Gertie, and same DOB, mostly (Sep-1862), so what happened to Sarah? Here is that Preston Census: 10 22 101 Ernst James M Head M Dec 2 1847 53 10 23 101 Ernst Annie F Wife M Sep 13 1861 39 10 24 101 Ernst William M Son S May 15 1878 22 10 25 101 Ernst Maria F Daughter S Jul 13 1882 18 10 26 101 Ernst Arthur M Son S Oct 15 1885 15 10 27 101 Ernst Gracie F Daughter S Nov 10 1890 10 10 28 101 Ernst Percy M Son S Sep 27 1895 5 Gracie and Percy, surely, are children of James' 2nd wife. Annie D. Graham. However, the answer to your question is a bit "riddlish"... William L. Ernst, son of James by his 1st wife, Sarah, married Amelia S. M. Nieforth on 20-Oct-1900 at Dartmouth, Hfx Co, NS. He was 22, she was 23. Unless she died REALLY soon after they married, I wonder if the "M" in her name was for Maria? Granted, the age is not good, but may have lied for marriage record? Also, on that marriage record, William is born in Preston, while Amelias S. M. is born in Seaforth., d/o William and Catherine, he is of course, son of James and Sarah. Annie S. Graham m. James Henry Ernst (Ernest), 13-May-1895, at Halifax. He was 46, widower, she was 33, spinster. So, though Gracie showed her mother as Annie on later records, she was d/o Sarah. Only Percy COULD have been son of Annie. That means Sarah d. 1890-1895. Still, was Maria their daugther, or wife of William??? 1911 Census shows William AND Amelia as follows (in Preston): 30 6 Ernst Reuben M Head W Jul 1856 54 1901 Links 31 6 Ernst Frank M Son S Nov 1895 15 1901 Links 32 6 Ernst Wilfred M Son S May 1903 8 1901 33 6 Ernst William M Nephew M May 1879 32 1901 34 6 Ernst Amelia F Wife M Jul 1877 33 1901 Links (so, born in JULY, just like "Maria" just 5 years diff.) 35 6 Ernst May F Daughter S Feb 1901 10 1901 (born JUST after 1901 enumeration?) 36 6 Ernst Jane F Daughter S Feb 1903 8 1901 37 6 Ernst Gertrude F Daughter S Jan 1905 6 1901 38 6 Ernst Stanly M Son S Aug 1909 1 Cheers, Jared P.S. This is simply a theory, but I believe it could be proven with a few more pieces of evidence. Just wish the Canadian census in 1901 used the same child count the US 1900 census used, as that might have been the key factor. *sigh* > Hello everyone: > > Does anyone have any more information on Maria Ernst, daughter of James > Henry Ernst (born Bridgewater 1847) > and Sarah R Hirtle (born 1850). > > The only record I've been able to find is the 1901 Census where she lived > with her family in Preston, NS. > I've been unable to locate her elsewhere. > > Does anyone have any further information on her? > > Thank you very much for any help you can give. > > Claudia Malloch > ---------------------------------------- > Basic List Commands: > > 1.
