I have the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. I have not used them in several years as the old familysearch.org Census was much more convenient. FS has moved the Census to the new Discover Your Family History and it is now unusable, either no records found or just the person searched for is found, with none of the family. Does anyone know how to load the Census CDs on the Hard Drive and search from there? bob gillis
While I can offer you no advice on loading the CDs onto your computer, when I use the following link: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://www.familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1804541 I can get individual results plus a listing of the household the individual is connected to at the very bottom of the screen. [I searched George Goldsmith in case your results do not match mine. You can then try my searched name and see what happens] SueB > I have the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. Yes, someone does. :-) On the CD that contains the 1881 Census, find the Update\NewFiles\Network Setup Instructions.rtf file. It contains step-by-step instructions on how to do it. However, setting it up to run on a single machine requires that you spoof the software into thinking it is running on a network by creating a networked pseudo-drive on that machine (I created a "Z:\" drive). Further, this cannot be done on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine unless you have the Professional or Ultimate editions since you must set up a virtual Windows XP machine and install the 1881 Census on it. The C-H obits and Index files requires the virtual XP machine as well, but once you have that set up, all three run quite nicely. -----Bob H----- On 5/11/2012 9:50 AM, bob gillis wrote: > I have the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. Hi Bob, I had one of those Census CDs and as I recall there was a software program that one had to load on your computer to use them. Does that ring a bell with anyone??? Ummm... when I want to view the 1881 Census as I USED to view it, I just go to the www.familysearch.org website, then on the right-hand side, and down a bit, I choose the option for "Go To Previous Site"... It's just like it used to be. Just a thought! Or, you can go to the following link, and just close out the window about the "new" site: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/ Jared Afterthought (previously known as a Post Script... OR, you can mount your CDs on your 'puter or laptop using a bunch of commands to make everything on their think you're running servers when you're really not. Only problem with that is, if anyone is hacking your internet connection (if you have wireless, for instance, and folks are trying to access your router), if they perceive you have several servers, you can guarantee you'll be high on their "hit list" in the future. Thank you Vickie for pointing out 1881 census is on Collections Canada. I'm pretty sure that if you just install the reader program on your hard drive, then you can read the actual disks from your disk drive without Putting them on your hard drive. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bob gillis" <robertgillis@verizon.net> To: "Nova scotia" <NOVA-SCOTIA@rootsweb.com>; "LUNEN-Links" <LUNEN-LINKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 11, 2012 6:38 PM Subject: Re: [NS-L] Familysearch 1881 Census CDs > > > On 5/11/2012 11:10 AM, Barbara Meredith wrote: > > Hi Bob, I had one of those Census CDs and as I recall there was a > > software program that one had to load on your computer to use them. > > Does that ring a bell with anyone??? > > Yes there is a Search program on the CDs But I was asking about > installing the CDs on my HD.
