Visit a local Family History Centre and use their access to Ancestry for free. Hi All: Hmmmmm. The last time I checked the Ancestry.com "access" at the FHC's was an extremely limited access by which you only got to see the things that the LDS had contributed to Ancestry way back when; e.g., the 1881 US Census transcription. Unlimited access to Ancestry at the FHC's went out maybe five or six years ago and, last I knew only the six largest FHC's had full access. Has something now changed and full access is back? PS. I don't like paying for access to historical records but if I didn't do it, many of said records wouldn't be on-line today. So I happily pay my $300 annual Ancestry fee, and being a genealogy fanatic, I get my money's worth. Others, who aren't quite so fanatical, might not. :-) PPS. The LDS have made significant progress in putting their holdings on-line and if you haven't checked out the "New Family Search" site, you should.
