Hello Everyone I've just spent a couple of days with my mother telling her all about her grandfather Eric Armstrong. We're both fascinated with all of the new information, which is mainly down to all of the help that everyone on this list has given me. Thank you to Rick for the Armstrongs from the 1951 directory for Pictou. They could very well be related to Eric. The Herald have confirmed that there is an obituary for Eric and it is in the post. (As suggested by Shirley) Thanks also to Bob and Toni who have helped with the location of Fernall (Fernhill). On Eric's marriage certificate to his first wife Lydia he stated that his father was John Armstrong a seaman and deceased. In 1869 there is a marriage for John Armstrong and Ruth Hunt in Cardiff and John and Ruth are still living in Cardiff in 1871. After 1871 I can't find any trace of John and Ruth. As I've been unable to find a birth certificate for Eric (or Brenhin/Brenhyn) I can't confirm whether they are his parents or not. The word Brenhyn is Welsh for King or Prince. Thanks also for the suggestion to check 411 for living Armstrongs and dropping them a line. Eric's youngest Amy was sent to Canada in November 1912 eight months after Eric. He was living in Minto NB at that time. All of the UK documentation that I have for Eric ie the 1901 census, his marriage certificate, certificates of birth for two of his three daughters, the death certificate for one of his daughters, the 1911 Electoral Register and his emigration record (the Ship's Manifest) he has always been Eric sometimes with an L and several times with Lionel. He may have changed his name to Brenhyn Llewellyn Armstrong to make it more difficult for him to be found. My grandmother Ella tried to find him after Lydia died through the Salvation Army to no avail. I really appreciate everyones help and suggestions. Thank you so much.
