S., Aug. 26 -(Special)- The brigt, Sceptre, Dexter master, owned by Zaricker & Co., Lunenburg, from from St. Johns, P. R. to Boston, arrived here this afternoon, having been dismasted. Your correspondent was first on deck and learned particulars. On Sunday night, Aug. 20, at 12 o'clock, lat. 37, long. 70.30, a gale was encountered, scudded (? -poor quality) under bare poles until she was brought to the wind at 6:30 Monday morning. The ship was then hove down on her beam ends, the main top mast back stays, foretop gallant and royal back stays were cut away. The ship continued riding heavily and the capt, mate and four men were washed overboard. At this stage one sailor, a Russian finn(?) was drowned. The gale abated about noon and under short sail the Sceptre made Lockport ahead at noon today. When off Gull Rock she was taken to tow by the City of St. John and brought to anchor in this harbor. Capt. Dexter reports that on Tuesday he passed a barque with foremast and head gear gone. On Wednesday he passed between 300 and 400 iron bound casks thought to contain turpentine. The ship awaits orders.
