Hi -- Would anyone know what the name of the Halifax Prison where privateers were kept during the Revolutionary War.....and if it is still standing? The person I am researching is Elligood MILLS, B. Aug 25 1744 and D, Jan 6 1832, of Waterborough, ME. Best regards, Sherry
Sherry, It appears that I was a little too quick in firing off my initial reply. After looking over some of my material, I find that the Melville Island Prison didn't come into being until approximately 1803 and was the place of internment for prisoners from the Napoleonic War and later for American privateers and others during the War of 1812, and not during the Revolutionary War. Sorry. Hi Sherry, If he was a prisoner taken during the American Revolution, then he may have been held in the Halifax Common Jail that was on Hollis St. in downtown Halifax. That prison is long gone; if you go to this site you will find out a bit more about it : http://ace.acadiau.ca/soci/agt/justice/csaaprison86.htm. Apparently it was opposite the Halifax Hotel and not much in the way of a solid structure. The author of the conference paper in the URL I just gave you took that information from T.B. Akins' The History of Halifax City, pp. 77-95. If you could look at that book, perhaps through interlibrary loan, you might find some more information. Hope this helps, Janice ----- Original Message ----- From: "sherry trout" <strout17@verizon.net> To: <NOVA-SCOTIA@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2007 3:30 PM Subject: [NS-L] {NS- Halifax Prison - Elligood Mills} > Hi -- > > Would anyone know what the name of the Halifax Prison where privateers > were kept during the Revolutionary War.....and if it is still standing? > > The person I am researching is Elligood MILLS, B.
